How to Become a Big Law Attorney (Without Going to a Top Law School)

- In this video, I talk about the hiring process for how to become a big law attorney. The big law hiring process can be quite frustrating, especially for someone who attends a mid-tier or bottom-tier law school. Getting a big law summer associate spot is the best way to become a full-time associate immediately after school, but it is also very difficult as competition is fierce. But, with careful planning, you can increase your odds. I was able to land a big law job despite going to a mid-tier school, and hopefully this video can provide some useful insight for those trying to start as big law associates out of law school.

Hey! That means a ton, Jack :) Great guide on becoming an attorney, and love the music
No problem! Best of luck with your channel as well!
had no idea the process was like this, great video
Thanks!
I had no idea about it until the few months before going through the application process. There's a lot of good info on big law hiring on sites like Reddit or Above the Law and others if you're looking to learn more!
This was really informative! I’m an incoming Loyola law student and I’ll keep this in mind ☺️
Thanks! Focus on those first year grades and you'll be off to a great start!
This video was very educational! As someone whose LSAT score doesnt indicate they have a good shot at a T14 school, this was quite inspiring. My goal would be to do BigLaw in chicago and Kent and Loyola were my top 2 choices, however i was afraid that the big law opportunity would be near impossible, watching this video granted me much reassurance. Cool to see some content from someone who goes to kent!!
Awesome! It's an uphill battle but it's not impossible!
Happy to chat if you have questions. Feel free to reach out!
@@JackDuffley just sent you a connection on LinkedIn(my names not actually jo) We have the same Alma mater(:
Awesome!
Yay!! I’m a law student and new real estate investor as well and I see your comments on Graham Stephan’s page. Your channel looks awesome. New follower here, I’m hoping to become a real estate associate as well. Hi! 🙋🏿♀️
Thanks so much! Best of luck to you!
Would love for you to do a video on how you are studying and how the Flex LSAT went for you. 🙏🏼 Thank you. 🎉 do you do a lot of MultiFamily Property transactions as a Real Estate Lawyer? Is Real Estate & Corporate Lawyer the same? 😂 Thank you.
Thanks for watching! I was planning on a bar prep video soon!
I will be doing a wide range of commercial real estate law transactions once I start as an attorney, including multifamily. I will inevitably do some corporate law (setting up entities, etc.) but corporate law is definitely different from real estate law.
I talk about the LSAT a little bit in this video: ua-cam.com/video/C7_wpFTuzn0/v-deo.html. I talk about it a lot in this article: www.jackduffley.com/how-i-improved-15-points-on-the-lsat/.
Looking for a big law gig rn. Went to a strong regional school in my market, but don't have the grades. I have literally everything else, including law school coursework where I focused my 2L/3L years on business law classes.
In any event, it's going to be tough getting a spot right out of school, especially this year when the hiring process was all messed up due to the pandemic. A potentially more reliable route would be working at a smaller firm or clerkship for a year or two and then making a lateral move when a big firm needs someone for one of their practice areas.
Regardless, best of luck!
@@JackDuffley Thanks, Jack. Not really someone who is "right out of school" but sort of a recent graduate w/ financial services experience in the regulatory compliance space. Trying to make the switch into big law to get some substantive legal training. I've heard of how stressful it can be with the work but I honestly think I may be able to handle it. Also agree that working at a smaller/mid-size firm for a few years is a better bet, and I'm also applying but not much luck yet in terms of interview requests. I'm sure the current economic situation doesn't help, either. Just have to keep at it, I guess.
Ah gotcha - yeah hiring is slowly opening up again after a very rocky year. All you can really control is how many applications you send out and how many folks you meet with in the meantime. Starting with alums from your school would probably help, especially if anyone by chance took a similar path.
@@JackDuffley Absolutely.
I am indian attorney how to get in big law firm in usa
Hi I am an Italian citizen I would like to buy a transport business LLC 51%how does it work to have the social namber or green card thanks
That would be a question for an immigration attorney. Would love to help but it's definitely far from my wheelhouse (I'm a real estate attorney). Best of luck!
I don't want to rain on your parade but you got hired during an unprecedented bonanza. I knew the editor in chief at Chicago Kent from the early 10s and he was top 3 in his class and still couldn't get Biglaw. Similarly, I graduated from UChicago Law in the early 10s and have never worked a day of Biglaw despite being above median. A lot of it is economic luck. You wouldn't have gotten Seyfarth as a Kent Grad in 2009.... That said, you are a bright guy and you deserve your position -- just be aware and grateful for how much the bigger economic picture affects that.
Thanks for watching. I tried to emphasize that the chances are low regardless and that it's an uphill battle. And of course the climate matters, just like any job opportunity. Just trying to provide some tips that might boost those already low chances and explain a bit about how the OCI / summer associate process works.
Hi Jack,
I found this a very interesting watch that applies directly to me.
I am currently in the UK studying to become a solicitor via the solicitor apprenticeship. My goal is to become a Corporate Lawyer at a big law firm. I am working at a PI firm currently.
I also own a property company and invest in property.
I would love to have a discussion with you on this further. Can you please provide a contact so we can discuss further.
Thank you.
Best of luck! My social accounts should be linked in the description to my videos.
