  • Rome, Italy - The Eternal City was at the mercy of the elements today as a severe storm brought heavy rain and powerful winds, wreaking havoc across the region. The storm, which hit in the early morning hours, caused widespread destruction, leaving residents and authorities scrambling to deal with the aftermath.
Meteorological reports indicate that the storm brought more than 100 mm of rainfall within a few hours, a significant amount for a city with a typically temperate climate. The sudden downpour led to flash flooding in several areas, especially in the historic center and low-lying areas. Streets quickly turned into rivers, and water levels rose to dangerous heights, submerging cars and the first floors of buildings.
One of the hardest hit areas was the busy Trastevere district, where narrow cobblestone streets channeled the floodwaters, causing significant damage to local businesses and homes. Emergency services are working tirelessly to help those stranded by the rising waters. The fire brigade reported receiving hundreds of calls for help, ranging from flooded basements to motorists trapped in their cars.
In addition to the flooding, gale-force winds of up to 100 km/h caused even more havoc. Trees were uprooted, blocking roads and damaging power lines, leading to widespread power outages in several areas. Public transportation was severely disrupted, with several subway lines and bus routes suspended due to flooding of tracks and streets. Passengers faced significant delays and many were advised to stay at home unless absolutely necessary.
