I used to work at these big house estates. You still have a right to walk through the estate at long as you are not right up at the house but they will try tell you that you can't and the police will try move you on. Right to roam is a powerful act. They fields look good for shrooms

Next time you go, there is also a sandstone wall nearby with lots of cup & ring marks as well as some other carvings. Look up Ballochmyle Cup and Ring marks. We were actually visiting these when a local walking their dog told us about the cave and took us there.
Nothing to do with Wallace, it was a Covenanters church, dating from the 1600’s, then enlarged or modified in the 1700’s when Presbyterians weren’t getting persecuted anymore for their beliefs. The history is there, you just need to look for it, similar to Pedans cave close to Ochiltree or Pedans cove at Failford ( which was for preaching) both worth exploring …

Not only the walk to it, but what he didn't really show is there's a single board across a small chasm to get over to the cave itself. I have been there several times, the first time after getting across the board, it took my spouse and friends a little while to coax me back across the board to leave (I have a huge fear of heights). You can see the board in the video, but he didn't show what's under it.

That cave is so much easier to get to than u made it look. Its on the Boswell estate and ive never heard it referred to as Wallace's cave. It was supposed to be that Pedan preached there to the Covenanters who would have been gathered on the other side of the river and his voice would have been easy to hear due to the acoustics there. Same as Pedan's cove at Failford. Wallace was 400 years previous to the dates u were saying.

Parking outside of Boswell house and crossing over the bridge to walk down the path on other side of river from the house then u don't have to walk that far before u cut to the right and into the trees where u can pick up the path from. I've done it and taken ppl there loads of times. Did u see the other "cave" cut out in the sandstone and the deeper cut out that is on the same side of river as the estate house ? Not too far from it and easy to access ?

I've also got a Wallace cave near me in Westfield West Lothian which is now just a small rock arch with a few family crests chipped into the rock. I am a Lanark boy and Wallace lived there. An old pal took me a few years ago, when I was 68 years old, he goes often and in fact it was him that put up the rope and the plank of wood. There are one or two good videos showing the scary path.
