Now THIS is how you review a videogame. This is exactly why I trust UA-cam content producers infinitely more than mainstream media outlet employees, any day of the week.
True that, man. I'm a HUGE sucker for high fantasy games, so it's nice to hear a more detailed and fair analysis. This game is unique, but I've already noticed too many things that would really bother me as you've pointed them out. Thanks for helping me dodge a bullet, brudda!
I've never played Odin Sphere on the PS2. However, with this HD remake on the PS4 you have convinced me into buying it and finally playing it for the first time. Thanks for the great review and God bless!
This title is a masterpiece!!! Consumed my life in the PS2 era! I bought it on PSN last year, but put off my replay when I heard about the PS4 release!!! Totally going to order it as a b-day present for myself
This was a nice review. I don't know how you manage to crank out these in-depth reviews 2-3 times a week. Also, I wasn't expecting you to review Odin Sphere! Just seemed to be outside of your normal wheelhouse, but I'm happy to see you enjoyed it. Put in an order for it myself.
Man, you're a fucken A review writer and narrator. Hardcore just enough, attentive to all kinds of creative detail, and with a perfectly paced delivery. You should be big!
I played PS2 version with japanese VO so i probably will play this with english, just to amplify the difference of experience. Glad to see it have new bosses, bosses are always cool.
Heads up for anyone looking to grab this, it's on sale at the moment for PS+ members for $14.99 and is cross-save/purchase for PS4 and PS Vita(I think, at the very least has cross save).
As always, excellent review. I never got to play the ps2 version, so I am looking forward to this. I pre ordered the storybook edition back in January, and from the sound of it, I am glad I did.
Great review as always, Karak. I'm a huge fan of the original Odin Sphere, as well as all of Vanillaware's subsequent releases. I just picked up the Storybook Edition myself for that must-have artbook, and I decided to check out your review while the game installed. Glad you dug it. I'm even more excited to play it, which I'm gonna do right aboooooooooooout now!
Wait, really? I'm curious what makes you say this. I don't really play phone games, so I'm not sure what about Odin Sphere would make people think that :/
solidmasterdante Because it's a sidescroller with a cartoony art style. Way too many people miss out on amazing games do to stereotyping them like this and I see it all over.
+Ssj .Blurr yes if you havent played the orignal. this was one of the highest rated games on ps2. like saying is ff7, zelda orcarana of time, or persona 4 worth the money? i just bought the big collectors box for 100 canadian but try muramasa rebirth (its plays almost the same vannilaware) first its way cheaper 19 usd or less . u need a vita though
i immediately preordered this in full when i read "runs at 60fps to remove the slow down the first game suffered from" haha that was all i needed for me to buy it. they coulda left the rest alone but im glad they added the new aspects.
I personally recommend the Vita version if you have one. It's identical to the PS4 version except you can take it on the go, and having this game on a bus or a ferry is absolutely delightful.
It all comes down to personal preference. I love Odin Sphere more for being story-driven. And now, thanks to the remake, there is a great battle system and leveling-up system to go along with it. Just by the demo, I find the revamp battles in Odin better than in Dragon's Crown.
If you compare the score on Metacritic, Odin Sphere Remake > Dragon's Crown. If you base on personal viewing, I am myself would rank: Muramasa > Odin Sphere Remake = Dragon's Crown. I love the art style, combat and forge swords system in Muramasa, also music soundtrack is super in that game too!
Great review! Now its time to bring back Dragon's Crown with 60fps because the frame rate of that game was terrible and really sullied the experience for me.
I have heard that for sure! Not sure its worth not covering the other current titles to inform peeps about their worth though. Its a busy time for this one man band lol. Most likely a year or a couple down the road I might be able to get back into it. Glad your digging it SF. Sounds like it really doesn't need me anyway lol
True by now everyone knows what to expect from CDPR. Honestly a year ago i really couldn't care less about their "expansion pass" deal. I thought it was going to be another run of the mill DLC shenanigans we are used to but they really proved me wrong when HoS released back in October and now again with BaW. As someone said on steam "Other developers make a DLC, and call it a full game; CDPR makes a full game, and calls it a DLC."
The only problem i have with your review is that you show too much content that you would see as maybe unexpected (romantic dialogues for example), so it feels like i was a bit spoiled in game story, but you managed to answer for my main questions about that game, definitely gonna buy now.
Where can I purchase on of these make sense translators? The times we live in, wow? I was just commenting yesterday on what a marvellous technological age we live and what seems like exponential growth and cross emogination of products. Then today i find out something I have been wanting forever is out. So where dear friend can I get me one if these make sense translators? Price? Do you think that will be compatible with the long talked and fantasised about "common sense translator" ? I apologise in advance, but you started it.
When you think you beat the game, then there is another chapter for each character during the Armageddon event. That's where you really need to farm. There all like level 100 bosses.
yes i replyed to you above, but this was one of the most loved ps2 games ever. so if you havent played it yet u need too. kind of close to missing out on playing ff7 or zelda oot
Now here's a game that really deserves it's remake. I have the original Odin Sphere on PS2 and trust me you can almost feel your PS2 struggling to run it smoothly. Clearly a case of the game being too advanced for the hardware it was on.
Aw man me too! I hated how the sjws cried because the sorceress had abnormal tits. I bought it new for the ps3 and got a nice 50 to 60 page art book with the purchase. Let me tell you vanillaware went through hell to create dragons crown, it almost didn't come out if it wasn't for Atlas publishing it. I just bought Odin's sphere and can't put this damn game down haha Hope you enjoy it as well 😃
I really wish this game wasnt $60 for PS4. I could get the vita version but after buying Muramusa on vita (great game) my hands cramp up after 30 minutes of play. Also I don't want to buy it used down the line, i'd like to give money to the publisher and vannila ware. Ugh 1st world problems.
I know I'm late to the party but they've had a 50% on sale on PSN if you have PSplus for awhile now. Sure its digital, but 50% off? Not a bad bargain...
sweet i ended up getting rise of the tomb raider but I think I might take it back in a few days and pick this up. Really I'm just killing time tell battlefield 1.
Just checking to see if you knew that the game does pause/slow-down VERY slightly after you connect with a heavy hit or special move? It also does the same thing when enemies, and especially bosses, are defeated on that final hit. The only reason I bring this up is because I recently remember reading about the accounts of others who have played the PS4 ver and they all say the game runs at a constant 60fps... and this is from people who know their stuff. Also, I seem to remember when some people were saying the same things about Dragons Crown, only to find out they weren't realizing that the games' enemies also pause slightly immediately after connecting with heavy hits making it seem as though the frame rates were dropping. If I'm totally wrong about everything I've said, and the game really is slowing down during certain parts, that's fine... I just wanted to make sure you knew about the games' visual style during combat.
My only criticism of Vanillaware is that their games overemphasize the stats. I'd rather the games be more simple _Golden Axe_ type games without the giant numbers flying everywhere and the like. I like things to be as stripped down as possible without any loss of depth.
So it’s safe to say that if I didn’t love the gameplay I shouldn’t stay because the story doesn’t get better? I want something to get immersed into since I not got a chance to get into FF as a kid but now it just seems too grindy and slow
Currently playing through this right now, and I am _so_ happy this game got a remaster. I had this on my PS2, but I never even made it through Gwen's story because the framerate issues were so bad they made the game unplayable. But now it's silky smooth and let's be honest, a game with an art style like this _needs_ to be in high definition anyway. My only real complaint with this game is the backtracking. I understand that it's related to the narrative, but it gets _really_ tiresome trekking through that goddamn volcano area for the fifth time. And while each character does have a distinct and satisfying play style, the only one who really makes going through the same areas again feel like a new experience is Mercedes. I'm not exactly sure how they could have rectified the problem, and thankfully the gameplay is good enough to make up for it, but it still hurts the experience. Come to think of it, Muramasa Rebirth really streamlined the formula found in Odin Sphere. You only have two characters, so the narrative is much tighter, and because each character's campaign is lengthy enough, when you start playing as the other one you don't immediately think "ugh, not this area again." It's a shame they haven't ported it to the PS4, more people need to play it. Either way, Odin Sphere is still phenomenal, and I absolutely cannot wait for 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim.
No one has to mention that because its a given, haha!! That being said they are not really connected but are somewhat in the same universe aswell as the same artstyle, but they are both great games even though i think Odin Sphere is a lilttle bit better IMO so i suggest picking it up if you've never played through it before :)
the "framerate slowdown" you mentioned is design choice..all Vanillaware games including Muramasa Rebirth and Dragon's Crown have this "slowdown" and that happens even in the smallest battles, it's not a technical issue at all but rather a setpiece to emphasize the battle more. This game is hardly demanding for current gen hardware and Vanillaware optimized these games perfectly even on the Vita
one explanation i can think of for these slowdowns is due to the ps2 architecture being extremely difficult to optimize for new hardware.. i even remember many of the remastered ps2 collections on ps3 had some of these framerate issues especially jak & daxter collection. but regardless all these games run far better than they did on ps2
Same developers. Also Dragon's Crown (and the d&d arcade games, kind of) and GrimGrimoire. It's really easy to tell when you see one of Vanillaware's games.
as amazing as it looks, I can't help it but think that the art of Muramasa and Dragon's Crown is significantly better can't they grow a mustache already and release Muramasa Rebirth on an acceptable platform
+ACG True. Bob Ross was the man and remains the man on Netflix and UA-cam these days. He falls in the group with the likes of Carl Sagan and Mister Rogers as childhood heroes for life.
"Costumes that would make Frank Fazetta say, 'puts some clothes on'." Seriously, you are an amazing wordsmith as well as being one of the best reviewers. Excellent as always, good sir.
I played the original, and I never got passed the first character. The controls were so clunky and always seemed like they had a delay. Also, I hate the level up system so much. It's just an overly convoluted mess. Simply getting experience from killing enemies and getting bonus experience for killing them quickly with a high chain count would have been just fine. That having been said, I'm still seriously considering picking this up. The controls were what immediately turned me off to the game, but the level up system is what kept me away. If the controls were good and the game was actually fun to play, I may have forgiven the level up system just to play more. Definitely gotta think about this one.
I've had this game since last year when it first came out and I plan on finally playing it now that I quit a certain other game, I just don't like the fact it has 3 female characters to 2 males, can I skip playing the valkyrie girl since I have no interest in playing her and it'll balance the game for me
You’re expecting too much from a reboot .. until you have a NEW team to do a overhaul of the game , it’ll still be the exact game with the same issues ..
Now THIS is how you review a videogame. This is exactly why I trust UA-cam content producers infinitely more than mainstream media outlet employees, any day of the week.
thanks
True that, man. I'm a HUGE sucker for high fantasy games, so it's nice to hear a more detailed and fair analysis. This game is unique, but I've already noticed too many things that would really bother me as you've pointed them out. Thanks for helping me dodge a bullet, brudda!

Half of the games you review I don't even plan to buy. I just love watching your reviews. ^_^
This title is a masterpiece!!! Consumed my life in the PS2 era! I bought it on PSN last year, but put off my replay when I heard about the PS4 release!!! Totally going to order it as a b-day present for myself
I love the artstyle, also I have Dragon's Crown (PS3/PSV) and Muramasa (Wii/PSV) so I think this game it's a must.
so how was the game?
im in your positon rn idk if i should get it or not
Great job man. Thanks for all your hard work and honest reviews. I will be buying this game now.

Never played the original. Bought this while watching review.
Ok. Im sold. Looking forward to playing this game.
I'd been planning to get it day 1 after playing the demo. Glad to hear this one is a buy in your books as well.
As always, excellent review. I never got to play the ps2 version, so I am looking forward to this. I pre ordered the storybook edition back in January, and from the sound of it, I am glad I did.
thanks I am just a busy person lol
Vanillaware games have always be beautiful to look at. I'd actually love to see GrimGrimoire, Muramasa, and Dragon's Crown remastered on PS4 as well.
This reminds me a lot of Dust: An Elysian Tail. That game was a pleasant surprise for me, so I hope this one will be as well.
Did you end up liking odin sphere?
Well made review. I absolutely love this game and more people need to try this masterpiece!
Great review as always, Karak.
I'm a huge fan of the original Odin Sphere, as well as all of Vanillaware's subsequent releases. Great review; good work as always.
thanks
Day 1 for me. Sadly, many will automatically write it off and call it a cell phone game.
lol probably
Wait, really? I'm curious what makes you say this. I don't really play phone games, so I'm not sure what about Odin Sphere would make people think that :/
solidmasterdante Because it's a sidescroller with a cartoony art style. Way too many people miss out on amazing games do to stereotyping them like this and I see it all over.
RAYMAN
This game is sheer brilliance !
The original game looks mouthwateringly beautiful in emulation, but damn I want a legit PC release! Come on, Vanillaware!
true enough
Excellent review as always
Playing through this right now and its kinda blowing me away, such a beautiful and fun game.
is it worth the price
+Ssj .Blurr yes if you havent played the orignal. this was one of the highest rated games on ps2. like saying is ff7, zelda orcarana of time, or persona 4 worth the money? i just bought the big collectors box for 100 canadian but try muramasa rebirth (its plays almost the same vannilaware) first its way cheaper 19 usd or less . u need a vita though
So stoked for this! It was terribly slow on ps2 where every fight slogged and boss fights froze sooooo much. So glad this was remade
ya and nothing that bad here
i immediately preordered this in full when i read "runs at 60fps to remove the slow down the first game suffered from" haha that was all i needed for me to buy it. they coulda left the rest alone but im glad they added the new aspects.
I loved dragons crown! Super excited for this!
Great job, love your videos review. You definitely deserved more views, wish the best
You are the man , you always make me laugh my balls off lol you def have the best reviews on youtube
Sup NICK! Glad your still liking them
i was so obessed with the original gane and i really hope to get this title again soon
This will be the 3rd time I've bought this game.
Same here lol
On sale now on PSN.
One of the best reviewers I've seen
best review I've seen for a game in a while.
Have you reviewed Valkyria chronicles?
Finally picked it up on sale on the psn, thanks!
I personally recommend the Vita version if you have one. It's identical to the PS4 version except you can take it on the go, and having this game on a bus or a ferry is absolutely delightful.
This looks awesome. I missed the original so am really looking forward to diving into this one. I can't wait to see what Vanillaware do next.
This looks a lot like Dragon's crown. Any idea which might be better?
It all comes down to personal preference. I love Odin Sphere more for being story-driven. And now, thanks to the remake, there is a great battle system and leveling-up system to go along with it. Just by the demo, I find the revamp battles in Odin better than in Dragon's Crown.

You should do a Walking the Walk for the new Witcher 3 Blood and Wine!
Great review! Now its time to bring back Dragon's Crown with 60fps because the frame rate of that game was terrible and really sullied the experience for me.
Hi Karak, will you be reviewing Blood & Wine DLC?
trying to find time man
You really should find it man, just playing it and its really damn good.

Just buy a persons time lol
Odin Sphere is just beautiful!
Still haven't beaten it... I think I got close bt then sort of stopped after farming >_>
When you think you beat the game, then there is another chapter for each character during the Armageddon event. That's where you really need to farm. There all like level 100 bosses.
That Frank Frazetta reference was hilarious.
Loved the PS2 version. Very excited to see the changes they made.
so you'd say it's worth it if you have played the ps2 original?
yes. def.
is this worth the $60 price? really interested in this.
yes i replyed to you above, but this was one of the most loved ps2 games ever. so if you havent played it yet u need too. kind of close to missing out on playing ff7 or zelda oot
Good review man, seems to be a good game
thanks
It's not a Crystallisation Cauldron ACG, it's a volumetric flask...
Just got it for PSVita today and hands down one of the best game i ever play in Vita. The combat is so fun and lots of skill to chain.
Ya fun game for sure
Now here's a game that really deserves it's remake. I have the original Odin Sphere on PS2 and trust me you can almost feel your PS2 struggling to run it smoothly. Clearly a case of the game being too advanced for the hardware it was on.
what does the remake change? the framerate and adds mid bosses?
Combat was completely overhauled. Definitely shifts the game much closer toward the "action" side of the "action-rpg" spectrum.
makes me want dragons crown on ps4 that was an amazing game
Aw man me too! I hated how the sjws cried because the sorceress had abnormal tits. I bought it new for the ps3 and got a nice 50 to 60 page art book with the purchase. I know I'm late to the party but they've had a 50% on sale on PSN if you have PSplus for awhile now. Sure its digital, but 50% off? Not a bad bargain...
airtec87 you can play the vita copies of these games on the ps tv. These also have cross save for PS4 and vita.
Do you have a trigger grip? They really hello make holding my Vita super comfortable to hold up.
Got it for 17.99 a couple weeks ago and im glad. Loving this game
Cool review. Reminds me of Dragon's Crown game.
It's done by the same studio, Vanillaware :)
Did they atleast change the terrible leveling up system?
Yes they did, it works kind of the same, but its far easier to level and a hell of a lot more rewarding.
Jordan Smith good, cause I hated having to eat alot to grow up
loved this game in the past i wish it was on pc
Well I think that there are only two things to say, first that I so can't wait for that game and second that like always review was awesome :)!
thanks
ACG Np :D!
does this have local coop?
No. Its a single player game.
great review m8
should i get this for the ps vita or the ps4
loved the original
saving up for the ps4 version
I'm on my way to the mall looking for a game, should i pick it up?
Yeah I've been playing for a week. bloody excellent
sweet i ended up getting rise of the tomb raider but I think I might take it back in a few days and pick this up. Really I'm just killing time tell battlefield 1.
just fully completed it about 10mins ago.
about 50 hours or so but I did do some unnecessary grinding
Andrew Sutton ohh wow thats not bad. So are there side quests and optional areas?
Just checking to see if you knew that the game does pause/slow-down VERY slightly after you connect with a heavy hit or special move? I just wanted to make sure you knew about the games' visual style during combat.
Yep that makes it even worse when its combined with the actual fps drops sadly.
if you like this try out dragon crown pro
The Japanese va was really good
My only criticism of Vanillaware is that their games overemphasize the stats. I'd rather the games be more simple _Golden Axe_ type games without the giant numbers flying everywhere and the like. I like things to be as stripped down as possible without any loss of depth.
this is true for sure
muramasa is probably the least stat focused. on fury mode its one hit= game over so stats hardly matter. skill way over damage output
So it’s safe to say that if I didn’t love the gameplay I shouldn’t stay because the story doesn’t get better? I want something to get immersed into since I not got a chance to get into FF as a kid but now it just seems too grindy and slow
LOL. I think Odin Sphere is absolutely not what you are looking for, considering you wanted to get immersed and mentionend something like FF :D
great review
Currently playing through this right now, and I am _so_ happy this game got a remaster. so no-one going mentioned how it looks similar to dragon crown as far as appearance goes not story wise.

a) It's made by the same developer. b) Odin Sphere was first. So your argument would be that Dragons Crown looks like Odin Sphere.
the "framerate slowdown" you mentioned is design choice..all Vanillaware games including Muramasa Rebirth and Dragon's Crown have this "slowdown" and that happens even in the smallest battles, it's not a technical issue at all but rather a setpiece to emphasize the battle more. I could never get into this game on ps2 years ago. Maybe I could give it another try.
Is it just me or does Odin Sphere looks like Muramasa.
Same developers. Also Dragon's Crown (and the d&d arcade games, kind of) and GrimGrimoire. It's really easy to tell when you see one of Vanillaware's games.
Lagzlot ___
Vanillaware produced Odin Sphere and Muramasa?
So Dragon's Crown Part II is good.
my man, did you make a Frank Frazetta reference? infinite style points to you
Met him. Excellent talent
undoubtedly!
honestly bro cant say it enuff, awesome review
as amazing as it looks, I can't help it but think that the art of Muramasa and Dragon's Crown is significantly better
can't they grow a mustache already and release Muramasa Rebirth on an acceptable platform
no. if you want exclusives, buy the console.
:^)
Can't wait for Vanillaware's next game
It kind of looks like Muramasa Rebirth....
yes for sure
same creators
This is a game I'd love to watch a friend play, but don't have any desire to play myself.
Bob Ross reference. :)
BR was the man
+ACG True. Bob Ross was the man and remains the man on Netflix and UA-cam these days. He falls in the group with the likes of Carl Sagan and Mister Rogers as childhood heroes for life.
Damnit, I want a PC version -_-
it's a possibility, don't count that out yet. At least it's Sega
Get PCSX2 and clone the game into a ISO aaaand... done! 👍
You gonna need a pretty powerful pc to run it smooth tho.
"Costumes that would make Frank Fazetta say, 'puts some clothes on'."
Seriously, you are an amazing wordsmith as well as being one of the best reviewers. Excellent as always, good sir.
thanks man
i want south park stick of truth. Come on steam.... Cheaper please
Love that title
I wonder, can vegetarians eat Baromett sheep... They're grown from plants...
Its hilarious consoles have framedrops in a game like this...
its the programing
Velvet... Hrrrng
Liked it on my ps2. But no need to buy again.
This is basically a modern pretty much copy of princess crown for the Saturn. Still a pretty bad ass game though
Odin!
this game is awesome.
I have a question about this games replay value. Can you do Xtra New Game (ie; New Game Plus) MORE THAN ONCE?
I played the original, and I never got passed the first character. The controls were so clunky and always seemed like they had a delay. Also, I hate the level up system so much. It's just an overly convoluted mess. Simply getting experience from killing enemies and getting bonus experience for killing them quickly with a high chain count would have been just fine.
That having been said, I'm still seriously considering picking this up. The controls were what immediately turned me off to the game, but the level up system is what kept me away. If the controls were good and the game was actually fun to play, I may have forgiven the level up system just to play more. Definitely gotta think about this one.
eh I'm going to have to disagree with you on the story. personally I fucking loved on the ps2, one of the reasons I beat the game was the story.
Sounds good. Too many mistakes and jumps without explanation to me but I know a lot of people who like it
$60 seems really steep for a 2d side scroller. otherwise I'd buy it
Stilts it's $30 on ps store holiday sell till the 3rd I think
The brawling reminds me of Dust (the game). But this looks less interesting.
Its out? TO PS STORE!
