- See the National Air and Space Society 2018 Vice Adm. Donald D. Engen Flight Jacket Night lecture featuring Apollo flight director Eugene Kranz.
Throughout his distinguished career, Eugene Kranz played a critical role in many milestones in America's space program, serving as flight director for Apollo 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, and 17.
A native of Toledo, Ohio, he served in the U.S. Air Force in South Korea, and then worked for McDonnell Aircraft before responding to a "help wanted" advertisement from NASA. He joined the newly formed Space Task Group and worked in the Flight Control Operations Branch.
When the Manned Spacecraft Center (now Johnson Space Center) opened in Houston, Texas, Kranz became chief of the Flight Control Operations Branch and then served as Gemini flight director. After his work on the Apollo program, he was the flight operations director during the Skylab program. Kranz was promoted to deputy director of Flight Operations and then to director of Missions Operations. He retired from NASA in 1994.
Gene Kranz in my hero. I was fortunate enough to meet him a few months ago. It's one of the highlights of my life. I was with my 14 year old daughter, and Gene was an absolute gentlemen. He joked with her a lot, and my daughter is now almost as big a fan of Gene as I am! He is the epitome of leadership, and he's exactly what you hope for when you finally meet your hero.
You’re lucky to meet a man who wrote a great chapter in our nation’s history. And to share that with your daughter.
What a time that was. Greatness. Great men. Great events. Our time.
So blessed to have lived through that time.
Apollo flight director Eugene Kranz you sir are a living legend..A brilliant man and Inspiration..
Right!!!!!
100% One of the best men managers there has ever been or ever will be.
So say we all! o7
When I think of leadership I think Kranz! His book “Failure is Not and Option” is a fantastic experience.
This guy is my personal hero. It´s hard to believe someone that young was tasked with and successfully developed procedures that brought mankind to the Moon and first and foremost brought back safely the crew of Apollo 13. Hats off to you sir...
As an aviation/space flight enthousiast, I can honestly listen to Kranz' anecdotal stories about the Gemini/Apollo days for hours and hours, but also his views and ideas on leadership/team building. The man has a profound understanding and appreciation of what it took (not just the tech side, but also the human factor) to make all this work.
Good Lord ! Mister Eugene Kranz !!! A titan by his own ! Thank you so much for sharing this... Many greetings from Belgium. Thank you to make the dream continue and live...
What an inspiring and effective leader. Gene has contributed so much to the United States and to space exploration. He is in my top 3 individuals I'd love to meet.
I could listen to him for hours!!
Me too !!!
A true inspiration, a real people person as well as a highly skilled engineer, a rare combination and someone who is a constant source of inspiration, a brilliant charismatic and engaging speaker I never tire of listening to, Gene just brings his words to life and communicates his enthusiasm with every syllable, better than any motivational speaker !
Gene Kranz is "The Man"!!!!
Brilliant insight into Mission Control from Eugene Krantz. Thank you for capturing his experiences.
Gene Kranz is my Hero for all time!
Incredible speech. I had the fortune of interviewing Gene a few weeks ago. Incredible history.
You sir are a legend, thank you for your leadership.
"Tough and competent."
A hero and a class act. Much respect, sir!
I come away completely impressed with Gene's knowledge and ability to operate under high stress. I could never do as he did, though I had two careers that always came with high stress. Gene seems so humble to have been at the front row seat during a huge moment in history. I remember as a 12 year old boy watching the landing on the moon and then the first step. What a different time it was. Thank You Gene!
This was amazing thankyou.
If I were half the man Gene Kranz is, I'd still be ten times the man I am now.
People like him are true leaders and sources of inspiration. The very opposite to most politicians we have today.
Me too
living legend..
One of the finest men to walk this planet. So much so that others could walk the moon. Thank you Gene Kranz!
We need these men to speak out for NASA........ as much as possible.
Inspiring man ! Thank you for sharing this talk.
Very worthwhile. Even if you have seen the landing video many times, hearing Kranz's explanations and asides adds a lot to one's understanding of what happened. Thanks to all who contributed to this and shared it!
thank you for honouring canadian engineers gene
Great man from a great era
Extraordinary. This presentation should be a mandatory part of any serious leadership student syllabus. Zero focus anywhere near the inept woke attitudes so prevalent today. Intelligence, competence, and sincere team professionalism resulted in a national triumph. His book is a phenomenal read. Highly recommended.
among the lecture,Donald D.Engen's Apollo13 flight control was very impressed.
MR KRANZ & THE APOLLO PROGRAM & NASA, THE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD SALUTE YOUR UNIQUE ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE HISTORY OF SPACE EXPLORATION!!!
Gene is the man you want as the leader of your team, he knows what he is talking about and professional in every way. You really can understand why the U.S. were the first to land a man on the moon.....🌚🌚🌚🌚
The epitome of leadership = Eugene Kranz
23:50 the photo of Jay Greene (fido) is from the STS-51L final Challenger mission; kind of a gut punch...
Gene Kranz: "You just don't learn a lot of this stuff without mistakes"
Elon Musk: "Absolutely!"
Steeley-Eyed Missile Man
Legend and Hero.
Whew! I'm breathing again as well. What a speech.
A true hero
You are one of my Idols
Love to have him back for the SpaceX Lunar landing.
Go to 4:44 for Gene. I know, heroes don't always wear capes
In the case of Gene Kranz, heroes wear vests.
1:00:10 such good advice; listening is so valuable
The last quote is from Teddy Roosevelt, "It Is not the Critic Who Counts" Paris, April 23, 1910
I worked for General Dynamics.
50:41 that's President Teddy Roosevelt... Lol (don't mistake me; I adore Apollo and Gene Kranz)
This, young millennial's is what used to be called "a man".
N1
Ask the guy from Bloomberg's pa. If he ever had a few drinks at Hess's
I'm always amazed when I see how comparatively few people watch this kind of important video. So much time wasted on BS instead.
Why are so many people listening to the hysterical speeches of a 16y old Swedish girl rather than seeking inspiration?
oh....don't forget...this is all faked...sarcasm (ON)
Lol if the Apollo program was faked they sure had painstakingly detailed failures and basically everything. But I think your comment was a joke.
