    Am I liking the bike? Yes!
    Is the bike perfect? Obviously not.
    Check the video to find out what I really don't like about the F800GSA!
    If you own a 800GSA as well, drop a comment below with your own list of things, and if you made some mods, share!

    I have 2014 F800GS. The Visor and hand guards shape is good for hot climates allowing the wind to cool your helmet and gloves but no backbone on the hand guards doesn't sound like a good idea when you drop the bike offroad

    Just came across this...great video and thanks for making it! I have a first year 800GSA same color. I love it. The windscreen is perfect for me but I am only 5'9" and it actually works perfectly for me. I have heard tall riders comment that its no good and too small. The handguards seem to do the job for me but there are definitely better ones out there to upgrade. I have gone down several times offroad and they are still intact. If they break then I will replace them with better after market ones. I agree the exhaust does not sound amazing but I spent my extra $ upgrading the suspension (Touratech front and rear) and now its perfect. Cheers

    Great video buddy! I had the same problem with my hand guards on my 1200LC, I bought the Touratech extensions, and they work brilliantly all year round. I highly recommend them. I've dropped mine off-road with the plastic guards and it's been fine, they cope surprisingly well. I would recommend a screen extension clip on for you, I have to use one on the 800GSA's when I ride them for the same issue as you. The suspension sadly can't be full ESA like your 1200 as the bikes electrical system can't cope with the heavy demand that ESA requires, I hope this will help you out my friend, take care!

    • @PierreC71
      @PierreC71  7 років тому

      Mike P thanks for the comment buddy! Yeah, I was either looking for the touratech spoiler (hand guards), or a pair of barkbusters storm... had them on the tiger XC and they were awesome. Thanks also for the infos! I thought the little 800 had the same "electrical power" as the big 1200!

    Hi I do agree with your 5 thinks which you mentioned, I install Puig adjustable wind screen wich fully protect you from wind, I change exhaust to BOS F tipe, front fork oil has been changed by mottorad to diferent viscociti, rear suspension for me it's good if you adjust by the load which you have on it. Thank you for video

    I have the same bike too, but you know that from XLADV.com. I think the windscreen is just big enough to cut off most wind. Any bigger and I feel it will be a plastic blade waiting to remove your head at the neck. Hand guards are not great in the wind, but I can attest they do protect from brush and falls. I have had several spills off road and the guards did their job.
    The exhaust: for a BMW, its sounds great stock. Smaller and lighter I agree would be nice.
    Suspension: Yes, needs a full upgrade to be serious off road. Get into some whoops with loose sand or gravel, and then go uphill and the bike wears you out. Its really hard to hold a decent speed to stay upright.

    • @PierreC71
      @PierreC71  7 років тому

      Hello Jason! It's good to see you here! Also, thanks for subbing! :)
      Alright, let's discuss. Keep in mind I use my 800 for both offroad AND touring, so that's why I'm complaining about certain things, ok?
      About the windscreen. I agree with your point, if we talk about offroading, but for touring, it's not really ideal. As you saw, I have ALL my helmet left outside, and that means a lot of noise, and turbulences. It's pretty annoying during long trips (had the same issue with the Triumph Tiger's "touring" windscreen). A windscreen expansion would be the ideal compromise: It would work when touring, and when I go offroad, I could take it off in 2 seconds.
      The same can be said about the handguards, pretty much. Yeah, I have heated grips, sure, but they can only do so much, if/when your hands are constantly being bombarded by rain or very cold air. I was thinking of getting a pair of Barkbuster Storm. They're super sturdy for offroad, and their shape is great also for touring, literally wrapping your hand in a plastic bubble.
      Exhaust: Eh, a lot of people are telling me to buy an Akrapovic, but...nah. No way I'm spending all that money (again) for an exhaust. You still have the stock exhaust? Can't remember...
      Suspensions: Yeah, I agree. I mean, as of now, they work pretty well for touring, but for offroad, I can already see their limits. We'll see in the future, right now I can't really afford a "redo" of them.

    First let me say thanks for your video...I have a 2016 F800 GSA also...so here's my thoughts on your issues. I agree with suspension issues, but 2 things..number one is I'm a big guy about 330 lbs loaded up so any bike I buy will need suspension help, that being said I do like the ESA even though it effects compression damping in the rear only....The windscreen....I drove the GS with it's short useless screen, so I'm pretty happy with mine knowing it's somewhat a compromise for dirt usage. The exhaust....the bike is actually too quiet for me so I installed a Akropovic (sp?) to the tune of $745....removed the inner baffle before mounting and now the bike sounds better at idle and just off idle...BUT is it worth the $745?....not really...but I now have a cool sticker telling the world I dropped a bunch of cash on mt exh....I really like my bike overall knowing it's not perfect, but also knowing very few ever are...

    • @PierreC71
      @PierreC71  7 років тому

      Titantramp4u Thanks for the kind words Titan! You know, I had Akrapovics on a bike, specifically on my Ducati 1098s. They were fantastic, too bad that they costed me 1200€... and I'm not joking! So I'm not really sure about buying another one of their cans... quality is there, but as you said, is it really worth ALL that money? Hmm.

    I just sold my f800gsa. Great video! Sub'd!

    • @PierreC71
      @PierreC71  7 років тому

      Pee Oh Trek thanks A lot! How come you sold the GSA? The bike gave you issues?

    • @Peeohtrek
      @Peeohtrek 7 років тому

      No issues. just a general lack of power for what I need. I mostly ride on long distance tours with an occasional trip off road. Most of my riding is on a highway and at those speeds (120km) the bike is buzzing and hot. the right side was always bugging me with the amount of heat it gave off. I also noticed that once it was loaded with gear it just added to the heat, vibrations and the lack of power. Having had a r1200gs before, I realized that I missed the old boxer and thusly sold the 800. I might as well have sold it before the bike was too old and lost a lot of it's value. So it was a quick love affair. I had the bike for 1 season and did an across Canada road trip on it. Total km when sold was 12000. I liked it a lot but i didn't love it. lol.

    • @PierreC71
      @PierreC71  7 років тому +1

      Ah ok, gotcha. Yeah, it's understandable. I mean, the 800 (std or Adv) is much more offroad-ish, compared to the 1200, which in return is a far better touring bike, in comparison.
      See that's what I like about the motorcycle-world: There's something for everyone. You didn't like the 800 for those reasons, I love it because it's a better offroad bike, while still giving me the opportunity do go touring much more than decently. Don't get me wrong, I loved my 1200GSA back then, but did I really need that behemoth of a bike? Most of what I do takes place around here (commuting, offroad, etc) with the couple of occasional long trips during the year, so a bike THAT big and heavy, was kinda "wasted" (not the right term) in my garage!
      I just think the 800GSA fits my needs a tad better, is all ;)

    • @Peeohtrek
      @Peeohtrek 7 років тому

      Exactly, Off road it is a way better bike than the 1200. I noticed that immediately as i never dropped it in the dirt like i did my 1200. lol.

    I'm very surprised they cut cost with lack of compression/rebound adjustment in the forks, especially considering what the bikes designed to do, still a sweet bike though dude

    • @PierreC71
      @PierreC71  7 років тому +1

      Thanks brother! You see, the forks-problems were also one of my issues when I had the Tiger800XC. Seems like everybody thinks a 800 only has to be bought by newcomers or people who don't wanna bother with tinkering... whereas in reality, the gs800 is a WAY more capable off-road machine than the 1200...and god knows if you don't need a good setup offroad, when you ride a 200+ KGs bike!

    Hi. Same bike. I have gone for tinted wind shield - looks better. Not to bother about wind as mainly in town (why GSA for in town? - bars over car mirrors and high riding position so I can look ahead). I have the Akrapovic sports exhaust silencer and I've taken the baffle out so it sounds quite nice.

    Great review.. I just completed 3500kms / 2000 mile trip with 2016 gsa.. one day we did 1100km trip and bike was comfortable as ever.. not the case with my previous bikes.. my thoughts .. 1. bike sounds like BMW.. you might want to change the exhaust, I was fine with it .. typical BMW product..
    2. gas consumption.. hahaha, at average 160kmh, bike was doing 7 liters on my trip..
    3. I am 5'10"... I was barely able to have both feet on the ground ( any suggestions ? )
    other than this.. bike is comfortable , windscreen is bit short for me , needs an extension for at least 3" or more.. no idea why was the windscreen cut in the middle .. you have to have an extension , otherwise your head will be punched heavily if doing over 100kmh
    overall .. its a great bike , that will do everything you want it to do... and its not the bike if you are just starting your motorcycle life.. no forgiving with GSA..

  • @paulcummins1609
    @paulcummins1609 5 років тому +2

    Yes, lot's to like but a few underdeveloped items. I spent at least A$2000- bringing it to a reasonable level. Why do they bother putting an accessory socket on rated for such a low output? The controller trips anything over 500mA; it won't even run an air pump. I'm in Australia and added a Barret Muffler and Barkbusters to my GSA immediately after purchase in 2017. I replaced the front springs with Hyperpro progressive springs after a couple of trips and now I am much happier with the front end. I left the WP dampers alone but the firmer springs mean it doesn't dive so badly on the fork on initial application - especially when you are wanting to slow down on a loose surface. I really love the ABS on road and in the dirt - Enduro Plus is definitely better than I am on gravel etc. I never switch it off now. Making electronic changes on the fly is a breeze (not so with several other popular adventure bikes) The engine is the only disappointment: too much vibration and a little lacking on highway overtaking duty. However, it does everything required off-road, pulling smoothly and predictably. It's a great back roads tourer.

      I've test ridden both the F800GS and the F800GT and both sounded limited. It will definitely sound like a beast with a proper pipe on it, but the stock pipe is just too muffled! I just put a Delkevic exhaust on my Kawasaki ER6N and it sounds much better - they are really affordable too and would look in keeping with the BMW

    I completely agree with everything you've said. I've had my F800gsa for 2 years now and this year will be upgrading the suspension (both front and back) with the Touratech Plug and Travel rear suspension and front cartridges. I just bought a Yoshimura exhaust as my Christmas gift and have already replaced the hand guards with the BarkBuster Storms. I got a Touratech windscreen spoiler that completely fixed the noise and buffeting from the existing windscreen (and it was cheap). I was thinking about upgrading bikes but when you do the math it's not super expensive to make the F800gs into a pretty fantastic bike for both on and off road use and will make the bike I love into something I love even more.
    Love the vids and can't wait to see your off-road stuff.

      Steve Goyette Thanks Steve for the links and the kind words! I was thinking about the same mods: TouratechUSA extension, new exhaust (still have to decide on the Brand, Yoshis aren't street-legal down here), and a pair of Barkbuster Storm (had them on a previous bike) . Thanks for the links and I hope we talk again soon! :)

      Titantramp4u Storms are great! I had them on my 2011 Tiger XC and they worked amazing! (Especially considered that the stock handguards on that bike were garbage...)

    I had a F800GSA before trading it in for a 1200GS. I didn't mid the windscreen - it got a lot better when I added a Wunderlich wind deflector. The exhaust sound I though was OK, nothing special. The forks seemed to work OK for me, again, nothing spectacular, just OK. What I didn't like about it was the throttle - very sharp, sensitive and snatchy, especially going off-road when there is vibration from the terrain. Another thing I didn't like that it felt very top heavy and more difficult to handle in low speeds manoeuvres. I felt it tried to have this balance between touring comfort and off-road capability, which for me was really not doing either well. So I decided that I would get a 1200GS for ADV touring and commuting and something much lighter for off-road fun, like maybe a Ducati Scrambler Desert Sled or something that was more for "fun".

    • @PierreC71
      @PierreC71  7 років тому

      Reinis Traidās hey Reinis, thanks for commenting. One thing: you describe the throttle of the 800 as "sharp", where honestly, to me it feels the opposite: I feel it's not "ready" when I twist it, kinda like if it was submerged in glue. Strange. What year was your GS 800?

    • @reinistraidas
      @reinistraidas 7 років тому

      Pierre ADV yes, that is what I meant - the lag. Mine was 2015. It sometimes feels very uneven when you try short throttle bursts, also it is not electronic throttle, but good old cable - feels very "on or off" - not smooth at all. I also didn't like the engine on highways - at 125km/h it starts to feel vibey. But not a bad bike certainly. A good all rounder, but the 1200 felt much more exciting to ride.

    • @PierreC71
      @PierreC71  7 років тому

      Reinis Traidās Gotcha. See, that's the beauty of having such a wide selection of bike to try and choose from: there's something that will fill your needs. I had a 1200GSA, and while being an absolutely wonderful bike, also to ride, for me it was literally too big. The 800GSA certainly has its share of shortcomings, but for what I do, it's probably the best compromise :)

      Pierre ADV I went for the scorpion exhaust on my F650gs Twin (same engine as yours but detuned slightly).
      The exhaust has a removable baffle, improves the sound and weight alot. And with the baffle removed it becomes a hooligan machine that you will love.

    Good review and I'd agree on most of it except for the ESA and rear suspention which doesn't bother me. I mostly use mine for touring only as I still have my old 2009 800GS which I find lighter and easier to manage off road. On both bikes I installed Fastway foot pegs (www.nippynormans.com/fastway-footpegs/fastway-footpegs-pair-f650gs700gs800gs-twins-r1150gsadv-r1200gsadvlc) which made a massive difference in comfort and standing ability and an auto Scotoiler system which is handy on longer tours and helps keep the chain the right tention for longer. On the 800GSA I also changed the screen for the Puig adjustable touring screen which I love. I wrote a review of it here if anyoneone is interested in a screen change www.roadtrooper.com/puig-touring-screen-review-for-f800gs-adventure/

    ok, why do you leave the xt1200? 5 things you hate about the xt1200?

    • @PierreC71
      @PierreC71  7 років тому +2

      Hello there!
      Alright, the XT1200... you know, actually I can't pinpoint 5 things. There were a lot of things going on, which I didn't like. First, the fuel range. This summer, with a fuel tank, I was able to do only 250kms. Ok, I was with a passenger and 3 full panniers, but still...
      Then, it was mostly "feelings". I couldn't feel at ease while riding: suspensions worked, the engine as well, but I really didn't feel like I was having any fun riding it. It felt like a "tool", rather than a "big toy", something "I'd use because she gave me fun". Hope you get what I mean!

      Same here. Sometimes those minor issues can be seen as "characteristics"! For example my father rides a MotoGuzzi Stelvio NTX: A lot of people hate that bike, but I absolutely love it.
      The new Africa Twin? Not yet sadly, it's not available for try at the local Honda dealer :/

    It sounds like a tractor. Everything you said was true. I suffered for 6 years with an F800. I will never buy another BMW. Honda or Triumph first. Madstad windscreen, Olins cartridges, Comfort seat (which you have), new handguards. You'll only have to spend 2500 more - or trade it for something better.

    • @PierreC71
      @PierreC71  7 років тому

      Hi Jon, thanks for commenting. I'm slowly upgrading the 800GSA in order to transform it into a proper adv bike. I gotta be honest, I like it as it is, but it definitely isn't perfect, far from it. If you check my other videos you'll see the mods I've installed. I think I'm gonna stick with it for at least another couple years.
      About Honda, that's a brand built on reliability, can't really go wrong with one of those. About Triumph though, I honestly had a bad experience. I had a 2011 Tiger 800 XC, and it worked brilliantly... until, out of the blue, the starter motor and the gearbox literally fell apart. It had 34.000km, always serviced at the Triumph dealer...

    • @CanadianTexaninLiguria
      @CanadianTexaninLiguria 7 років тому

      If anything my F8 has been reliable - for 50000 km. I just can't get my head around the fact that after purchasing a BMW, I had to spend thousands to make it safe and comfortable for long distance riding. If their cars were built like this, the would sell none.

    • @PierreC71
      @PierreC71  7 років тому

      Yeah, I see your point. But hey, pretty much all bikes had to into a bit of "surgery" to become more suited to the rider. I'm basically doing to the 800GSA what I did to the Tiger before she broke down, and what I did to the 1200GSA, the Aprilia Caponord, etc. etc. I try to transform them into properly capable offroad machines while still being able to take on long range tours. And, as you have already guessed, it's a very expensive road to take... ;)
