Had to share. My oldest sister won Ct lotto in 92. 6.4 mil. Before she won she was a Nurse practitioner in Hartford Hospital neonatal intensive care unit. Crack addicted new born would quiver and pass in her hands. When she won, she became a foster mom to the babies that lived. She retired and did physical therapy with the babies. Ct payer foster parents,she donated that money to the nic unit. She adapted four, brothers and sisters. All have graduated high school some are in college. She is a real saint in my opinion.
I would set up a trust fund for my mom and Brothers and sisters give them like 25-50k a year depending on home much I won. Nothing massive for sure just some extra money to make sure they good.. I would buy a big patch of land not crazy just like 10 acres with a nice ranch house or farmhouse then over time maybe build some container homes on the land and let my family live in them. You do realize that the majority of the people who play the lottery on a regular basis are low income or poverty level homes right. As a lottery winner, I would pay off all my debts first, second, invest in stocks, bonds, index funds and real estate. And third, I would save and live off the interest. That's exactly what I would’ve done.
It's hard to pick the one that was the most foolish, but I would say the woman with the 6 kids. Each one of them could have been placed in a private school and gotten the best education. She could have gone back to school to learn how to run a business and figure out what she wanted to do for her future and her children's future. She wasn't thinking about her kids at all. Her friends probably enjoyed this more than her kids. When her kids get older and realize the life they could have had free of growing up struggling and doing without, they will lose some respect for her.

I think we all feel that if we were given the chance to come into a large sum of money from the Lottery we all would do it smarter and that is a 50/50 chance. Winning the lottery one would be better off accepting an annuity (I know some disagree) but with an annuity you have less chance of going through all of your money fast. I think I read or maybe even watched a show where they suggested that you set aside a set of amount and blow through it to get passed the winning the large amount of money. Once you have blow through the set amount you make sure the rest is used frugally. If you are single spend it, unless you feel compelled to give to charity and if you have a family take care of them. enjoy your winnings and every good thing you can enjoy with it. Once you die all of your material things will be divided up by everyone else, family maybe friends or just anyone that would want it or it gets throw away. Keep your winnings to yourself the less anyone knows the better off you will be.
I already know what I would do if I won the big Megamillion or Powerball Jackpot. I would put 10% in a trust fund to donate to places like the Shriner Hospital or St. Jude Children's Hospital. Also to help really deserving people who just needed a help up. I would give my 3 siblings millions, but they would be responsible for giving their kids what they think they could handle. My son would get the bulk of it, but not full access until he turns 40 and complete a class in finance. Any relatives that never visited me or invited me anywhere would get zero. What is left when I die would go to my son and grandson.

On the other hand, lottery winnings are considered to be ill gotten gains and so cannot be used to satisfied debts and which is a whole other subject.

I found that interest bearing accounts are rare no matter what the bank tells you, I’ve had an account with a bank for years and all tgd paperwork talks about interest, I finally got tired of never seeing any interest and opened a savings account with a credit union, with them I actually do get monthly interest on the amount in the account so I will be moving all my money to them in the future

Where I worked, the person buying the tickets had to run copies of the tickets bought and give them to his coworkers.

Winning the lottery puts a person into a group that can be characterized as the financially irresponsible. Because of the astronomical odds of ever winning, and the sometimes daily output of their income in playing the lottery. So it's not surprising that the very few that win cannot handle money.
Why not put the winnings into an interest bearing account and live off the interest?
I found that interest bearing accounts are rare no matter what the bank tells you, I’ve had an account with a bank for years and all tgd paperwork talks about interest, I finally got tired of never seeing any interest and opened a savings account with a credit union, with them I actually do get monthly interest on the amount in the account so I will be moving all my money to them in the future

In the UK it was 16 to play the lottery when it first started in 1994 but they have changed it to 18 now
