The tilt shift lens can also be used to take shots with reflective surfaces such as mirrors or windows without seeing yourself or the camera in the shot.
I don't own a tilt shift lens but because I'm in love with the miniature look of these shots, I do it in post in Photoshop. It's under the Blur Gallery filter. However, I didn't know framing a tall building would be better using a tilt shift lens. Mike, I appreciate you filming your camera when you adjust the lens or the settings. It feels like we're present in the scene. The miniature timelapse in this video is to die for.

I worked for a commercial product photography company using interior home scenes (built in our wareshous studio) as the background for our products and used a tilt-shift lens for 95% of the images we did to keep the walls and corners straight. Now, on my own, I'm learning how to use one outside of the studio. Awesome video and explanation! Thank you!!

Just stumbled across this video, Mike. I've been watching your more recent videos bit didn't know that you had covered stuff like this. I've been dithering about whether to go for a Canon TS-E 24mm Mk1 with an adapter or the Samyang TS 24mm with a Sony mount for my a7rii. Good, used Canon is about the same price as a new Samyang with the Sony mount. Looks like it's going to be the Samyang. Your clear explanation has helped me to make up my mind. I have the Sony 16-35mm f4 but realised that I wanted it to take the kind of photos that can only be taken with a tilt shift lens! I'll keep the 16-35mm for a while but think I'm unlikely to use it much after I get the Samyang.
Hi John, Yes, I have quite the back catalogue of videos! 😆 Great to hear you are finding some of them! Whenever I get my hands on a tilt shift lens, I always want to buy one but I normally just rent them for certain shoots. The quality of the samyang is so good and from a tripod when you stop down a little, it is so close to the canon that it is well worth the savings. I just wish Sony would make a dedicated tilt shift lens for the FE mount. Thanks for watching 😁👍

I have played around in post and made some time lapses with the miniature look, but it would be cool to do it straight out of camera. Have been looking for a tilt/shift lens for a while got a Samyang tilt/ shift lens in mint condition at a good price they are a very versatile lens great for panoramic images and product photography I shoot at f8 most of the time so not a problem.

The one thing that I kept on doing was trying to turn the fine tuning dial thinking I was unlocking it, apart from that it's pretty straight forward and adjusting it makes sense after a few days with it. 👍 ... I've owned the Canon 24mm TS for a few years. Switching to Sony mirrorless really makes this lens easy to use. Before, when shooting outside I would go into Live View, and zoom in 10x to set focus. Glare on the back screen made this a pain. Then exit live view and I would take my shot. With mirrorless, I can compose and focus with the viewfinder and make use of zebras to fine tune the focus. So the Canon glass works best on a Sony body.
Good point Jim, even though the canons do have a better resolution on the screens, they do suffer from glare and that's when the evf really does help. The great thing is that as they are manual focus lenses, there's no worries about incompatibility. Manual focus all the way!! 😀👍 Great to hear your thoughts on the canon TS.
What if I had a Sony A1 and a wider lens, like my 20mm, and shot straight on...then cropped as required, and adjusted the verticals in post? Would you still recommend a tilt shift lens?
That would work, but youre cropping in on an image from a $6500 camera and this would basically give you a similar sized image to the A7iii. For that price, you could buy an a7iii, the tilt shift lens, get the same resolution as the cropped image from the A1 and then still have enough money to buy a pro wide angle lens and a telephoto lens...and probably have enough change for a few beers as well! But in theory you could do that...🤔

This is avoiding a lot of post when we shoot in an urban environnement, I've seen that last time in Dubai ! :o) For the tilt effect I'm using LR and the effect is similar. Nevertheless, this type of lens can be fun to use...

Rokinon makes an Sony e-mount 24mm tilt shift lens. I wonder if this is just as good as the adapted setup you used?
Those are basically the same lens as I had, but with the adapter built in to the lens.

Sometimes you talking about a intervall of a half second. Which tool do you use for that? my intervallometer allows only 1 second or higher.
It depends on what camera you are using. with the A7iii, it has the s&q mode which allows 2 frames per second, which is a 1/2 second interval. 👍

Can't you just do the same by just adjusting your tripod up and down?
No, it's a lot more effective than that...it's a bit like being able to adjust your tripod up by about 15ft
