    Someone else may have mentioned it, but you can set the brightness knob on the MSR between two settings and it will be OFF. I keep mine set between 4 and 5. A slight nudge either way and it’s on.

    This is the first time I've come across one of your videos and honestly I'll keep watching them.
    I will say that I can see it both ways. Tactically speaking the last thing you want to be doing in a self defense situation is fumbling with knobs. And I like the motion activated nature of the Romeo5. But at the same time if that situation hits and you have to make an adjustment for some reason, you're gonna want the biggest knobiest adjustment when your fine motor skills are reduced due to the inevitable chemical dump you experience. I have the Romeo 5 and personally love it, but wanted a review on the MSR.
    So it really is a matter of preference and training. But whichever one you choose, TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN! Because in a SD situation you're going to fall back to your lowest level of training, and rarely rise to the occasion. Which situation do you want to find yourself relying on in a life or death situation: luck or training and muscle memory?
    Great video, brother. Keep it up.

  • @vanguardlh9548
    @vanguardlh9548 2 роки тому +2

    You don't want to be turning a dial to change dot brightness (which you should've already adjust beforehand for home defense), but it's okay to be spending time while paused to press buttons. Um, you can dial a change in brightness a lot faster than have to press buttons to cycle through brightness. Having the solar panel on some red dots helps change brightness based on the ambient light level, but then you're into the $300+ red dots. Plus, the buttons are covered with a rubber membrane which eventually wears and tears away exposing the electronics underneath. The dials have an o-ring to seal out water. Dials have been used for around 40+ years (I had an Aimpoint a very long time ago with a dial). Press buttons would be nice if you didn't have to step through each increment at a time, and some include changing the MOA and reticle sizes, so you have even more increments to step through. A twist of the dial is a lot quicker. Most users like the buttons between they look more cool, and are more sleek reducing the profile of the body of the red dot sight. Really comes down to if you want sleek, or bulge. For a carry weapon, sleek would be better, but the rubber membrane doesn't last as long as the o-ring in a dial.
    For a plinker, sleek is irrelevant. For home defense, I've had both, and dials are much quicker. Geez, you don't even have to be looking through the red dot to change brightness. For home defense, you're really going to stand there to tell the assailant "No, stop, I have to press some buttons to adjust the brightness, okay, now you can come at me"? Also, a fat dial can be found easier in [near] total darkness versus you trying to find the buttons, and figure out just where to press.
    For home defense, perhaps the front and read lenses can be removed. They're valuable when outside, but not when outside. You don't care about glare when inside your home, nor care about a sniper snatching your location. There looks to be screws to let you take off the front and rear lenses.
    The motivation activated dot, like Holosun's Shake-Awake, helps to reduce battery consumption. However, I can't see anyone not deliberately powering off the sight when storing it, like in a safe, disabled in a drawer, or trekking to the range. For home defense, who would rely on a claimed longevity rather than replace the battery every year? I buy a slew of batteries, and replace ALL of them in every electric or electronic device for 2 reasons: to ensure the device actually works when I need it, and to eliminate corrosion damage from leaking batteries. I don't like my flashlights getting corroded, so I'd get more ticked off it my red dot sight got its battery contacts corroded.
    Talking about batteries, on the Romeo5 the battery compartment is accessed by a frontend cap. For the MSR, the battery is under the cap on the brightness dial. So, both can units can have their batteries replaced without removing them from the rail which would lose the zeroing. The Romeo5 uses a AAA battery, and why the access cap is a cylinder. That is a lot more capacity than the coin cell batteries can hold; however, make sure to use a NiMH AAA battery to use the sight in wider operating temperature ranges (-30C to 75C) than for alkaline batteries (-20C to 40C). The MSR uses a lithium coin cell battery, so less capacity but wider temperature range (-20C to 60C) than an AAA alkaline but less than for an AAA NiMH. You might not be in a comfy air-conditioned home or car when you need to use your weapon. No wonder the Romeo5 has such a long battery life: it has a huge battery, and shake-awake. Would be interesting to see which red dot stays illuminated when constantly on. A lithium CR1632 coin cell battery has typically a 130mAH rating. A NiMH AAA battery is usually rated from 600 to 1200 mAH. Geez, no wonder the Romeo5's battery lasts longer even without shake-awake.
    Both those units come with a 2 MOA dot. From what you show, looks more like a 4 MOA dot, or bigger. I do plinking for fun, and varmit shooting, and those dots look just too big for my taste. I'll have to revisit Sig's web site to see which rail-mount /green/ dot sights they have rated for a 1 MOA dot, and which can be enlarged. I suppose that'll move to the expensive units.

    Turning on with the knob is a gross motor function that can be done without visual verification, in the dark, etc. - just like flicking off a safety. Auto on/off is NOT preferable if you are out in the field moving or if the weapon is in a vehicle because it will be on when you are not using it. Auto on/off is also exactly one additional point of possible failure for Murphy’s Law. What if it fails to only off? The MSR also comes with flips ups which are important for winter when there is snow. My first red dot was an Aimpoint H2 with no auto features and the MSR is just as good IMO.

You think you're going to be worried about having the perfect dot brightness set when someone is coming to do you harm? Does it really matter if the sight is ever turned off if the batteries still last longer than a 1 or two year maintenance change? These are real things to think about

    Good Review, thank you. I have both the ROMEO MSR and the ROMEO 5. In my opinion the ROMEO 5 is far superior to the ROMEO MSR especially for the price difference. I bought the MSR to put on my 1st Generation Sig MCX (a 16” barrel 300 Blk) that I am relegating to just being a collectible, CQB training weapon, and a range toy. The MSR and a set of MagPul MBUS flip up sights are replacing a Vortex Razor 1-6x24 Gen-II E LPVO that had been on this gun. I definitely don’t need the MOTAC feature on an optic that spends most of its time in a gun rack in my gun room. For a gun I will primarily use as a trainer the MSR is a great optic. However, if you are going to use it for anything more than training, I highly recommend stepping it up to the ROMEO 5.

    Not a bad review, but I'd disagree with the whole nob vs button scenario in an emergency. First of all, in an emergency, you're not gonna be fumbling around to mess with your brightness and even if you were, a nob is much more intuitive than trying to mess with those buttons. But trust me, if you're just trying to survive in an emergency the brightness is something you should have set before you go to grab it.
