How to make a gen 1 pokemon
1. Give it eyes.2. Give it a horn.
Gen 1 Pokemon: Simple animal designs (Pidgey, Ratata, Seel, Spearow, Diglett) or simple inanimate objects (Magnemite, Voltorb, Lickatung, Ditto)
Gen 5 Pokemon: Actually decently designed animals (Pidove, Druddigon, Deino, Snivy, Drilbur, Tynamo) some more complex inanimate objects, some good some bad (Trubbish, Vanillish, Pawniard, Litwick, Yamask, Cryogonal) and every bug type is actually useful *full evos this time* (Leavanny, Excavalier, Acceldor, Crustle, Scolipede, Genesect, etc.)

Chandelure is one of my aces in my hail teams. No one excepts it.
I liked Litwick and Honedge and their evolutionary lines as well. I used a Chandelure and a Aegislash as full-fledged team members myself in the Pokemon games of Black 2 and Y respectively.
Electrode Gaming to be truthful chandelure is freaking amazing.
to be fair vanilite isn't actually made of ice cream it's snow and ice and the pokemon lore says the desert was based off them, just saying its a stupid design but not really lazy per say it is kinda thought out

ATTENTION ALL! PICHU APPEARED IN SECOND GEN! Even though they're Pikachu's pre-evolution, it doesn't mean they were intended to be since the very beginning. In first gen, you have Pikachu and Raichu. Thats it. Hence why we took Raichu out since he was always there and placed Pichu in since he was added later to expand the pika-cuteness. That is all!

My thoughts on Vanillite, Litwick, and the other inanimate object Pokemon is that they are some of the MOST creative Pokemon out there. You need an extremely creative mind to make gears, candles, and even a pile of trash into a Pokemon. Look at Chandelure and Aegislash, they look simply amazing, and to me so do the others. Do you know what Pokemon I think are uncreative, bland, or uninteresting? A lot of Pokemon from Gen 1 like Ekans and Seel. Voltorb and Electrode are inanimate objects but they feel too much like inanimate objects. What makes the Litwick line for example cool and creative is that they have feeling behind them. Litwick looks happy and Lampent and Chandelure look sinister, stoic, and awesome too! However, I like the Magnemite, Porygon, and Eevee lines (Well I don't like the Gen 1 Eeveelutions and I like Porygon 2 and Z a lot more than Porygon.) Before I end this comment, I want to say that I think every Generation is amazing and creative, I just think Gen 1 is a little lacking compared to the other Generations.

And honestly though, can you really call Chandelure's design all that lazy? It has a lot of basis on the Willo-the-wisp, and it makes the whole chandelier thing work for it. Being based on an inanimate object doesn't automatically make a design "lazy."
Honestly if you are going to the guys who did a whole list on iconic weapons without knowing what iconic means looking for originality, you are in the right place.

Like Trubbish, who yes is a pile of trash, but I personally making the knot as bunny ears.
Vanillite is actually well designed-ish. Plus it's implied that icecream in the Pokemon world are BASED on the Vanillite line.
And finally Klefki. At least they didn't get an ACTUAL key and stick eyes on it. It's actually pretty clever having the key hole as a "mouth".

Hmm, I always thought Klefki was kinda clever as fairys did enjoy stealing shiny household objects such as keys in legends. So why not a mischievous little pokemon who developed to be a keyholder just to perpetuate it's addiction to keys.

beside it's dex entry is so funny, you feel like the game makers were having fun with Klefki, i'm sure they were aware how the fans were going to react and made fun of it before the fans could. c'mon it jungles it's keys at enemies in self defense, that's hilarious and makes up for everything :D

I'm reeeally glad for the Pika clones, since they're AWESOME!!!!! Although, I admit my initial thought was not "COOL!!" nor "AWW!!" when I first saw Dedenne on TV. It was: "Why's Raichu a mouse?!"Agree with ya 100% on Seel, Sunflora, Luvdisc, Vanillite, Klefki, Trubbish, most of the honourable mentions and Voltorb & Electrode. Why do people get their panties in a bunch about Pokemon that are based on inanimate objects? No where does it state that Pokemon have to be animals. Just say you don't like it because it's not an animal, don't say it's lazy. Some of these like Honedge, Vanillite, and Chandelure look awesome and have detail in their designs.

it adds little to the conversation.... just because something is financially successful doesn't mean its good... i dont think you would argue twilight or harry potter are literary excellence because it made alot of money would you? .. no they are popular but not necessarily a good example of how to make a good story... you are essentially using the fact that it made alot of money as a reason not to criticize it... if we were criticizing it for not being appealing designs then that might be more fair... but the argument is that they are lazy. hence how popular they are is irrelevant.

I got a few complaints...A few of these aren't just simple objects with eyes. Luvdisc is based on the real-life discus fish. Take the fins off a discus, and you have a heart-shaped fishy. Seriously, google discus fish and see. Real life discus are actually a lot more colorful than luvdisc, believe it or not! Makes me wonder why they chose to make luvdisc just straight pink. They could have put a neat discus-y pattern on it, but nope. :(
I actually think klefki is a really awesome concept. It is NOT a set of keys. The keys aren't a part of it. It's a little fairy with steel arms. It just goes around stealing keys to decorate itself with because it likes them. That's cute as hell.
Vanillite is an icicle with snow on its head. It isn't ice cream. A pokedex entry in one of the games says it gets really nervous when the snow melts, and it's head is actually round and blue. I mean sure, you can criticize the designs, but at least know what they are.
But chandelure is just awesome. Never criticize chandelure. My baby.
I'm shocked seel isn't on this list. Was expecting it to show up and it didn't. It's a seal...Named seel.

You are a dunce; why would a Pokemon want to look like ice cream? To be eaten? To lure prey? Ok, but to happen in the middle of no where where ice cream isn't natural... bad choice of 'camo'. I think the idea behind Klefki was some story about fairies stealing keys. Why it looks like a keychain? No idea. It could have existed and looked a bit more like an actual fairy instead of that, and we'd be good.
Garbador is, in my opinion, the ugliest pokemon ever. Blegh.
I think Ditto is supposed to look simple and underdesigned, since it's point is to turn into other things. Still looks lazy tho.
*HEY!* Don't pick on Chandelure! It's idea may be simple, but the design is actually somewhat complicated.
Similarly I wouldn't say the Honedge family is lazily designed, it's more just a question of what your thoughts are on "man-made" pokemon.
I actually see a lot of people generally complaining about later generations overdesigning pokemon. Which is the exact opposite of this list. A nice change of pace, that.

Emerald Dragon Actually no, for whatever reason I have no problem with Muk. It's reeeeally ugly, and by all logic of what I like and dislike it should be one of my least favorite pokemon, but I actually quite like it despite all the ugliness. No idea why.
Trubbish I actually find oddly cute. You know, an ugly kind of cute. Like some people find pugs cute.
And thanks for noticing my not being a genwunner. I am generally confused by those people, asking "have they even played the newer ones?" and "are the nostalgia goggles really that strong?"
Yeah, that's one thing that greatly annoys me. And they're also clearly wearing something over their ears, as well; if they're so hellbent that Gen 1 is life, they should be able to find some appreciation for Gen 2, since it was meant to be part of it, or at least some of the Pokemon were. And I can't help but laugh and think "If Garbodor were part of Gen 1, and Muk over in Gen 5, they would be singin' a different song".
Couldn't agree more. Personally I don't mind object Pokemon too much as long as they make sense and are well designed. You've already mentioned Klefki's origins, but Chandelure also makes sense as it's based on the idea of the will-o-wisp/hitodama, ghostly blue-purple flames and it's stages could come from the cliches of the spooky floating candle, the one lit lamp on a foggy/dark road, and the haunted mansion complete with huge chandelier.
Something that's really interesting though, at least to me, is that a lot of object based Pokemon are amazing in competitive play. There is Aegislash with it's ridiculous ability that essentially gives it a base stat total of 720, the currently most resistant typing, and the ability to learn a move that used to be exclusive to a legendary trio. Than there's the previously mentioned Chandelure having a ridiculous 145 special attack while still having both defenses in the 90s. Plus it learns Energy Ball allowing it to fight against any of it's fire based weaknesses in one turn instead of two. Klefki is also not to be messed with, what with it being the best Pokemon to utilize the prankster ability ever and it's great typing. It even got a signature move... which got banned because it was too good. It's almost like some of the object Pokemon teamed up after hearing about the hate against them to devise a plan to dominate battles.
Most of theme were from Black and White which happens to be my first Pokemon game.

You really shouldn't of included Pichu as a "Pikachu Clone" considering it's part of Pikachu's evolution line. Because of that, it really does not make any sense to call Pichu a "Pikachu Clone". Just saying. :|
But he wasn't first gen. Raichu was always intended to be Pikachus evolution. Pichu was added later, so he's part of the Pika cuteness.

Yes, but by that logic other added evolutions and pre-evolutions of other Pokemon would be considered "clones" of that Pokemon.
I agree pichu is Pikachu's pre evolution state even if it was added later I don't count it cause it's obviously going to look like him
+Connie Maheswaran Pikachu never needed a pre-evolution form and pichu was added to market off of pikachu's cuteness. Most of the other added evolution were just to fill a quota not to market their mascot. There is a difference between pikachu and other pokemon.
Pikachu clone os what fans refer to as any later generation electric rodent Pokemon that share similar traits to the mascot "Pikachu".
Sone are that they have the electric pouches on their cheeks, a similar face design (2 small eyes and a triangle like mouth), and of course a stout small figure.
I want a Chairy in Gen 7. They evolve into Sofar at level 34

Not to be a hater but people really fail to understand that some pokemon's point (ditto) IS to look that way! Also klefki's and vanillite's concept is quite nice and i actually like both

10. Call them marketable, but the designs aren't particularly "lazy" in and of themselves, yeah with context - i.e. them literally being pikaclones, sure, but they aren't terrible designs, and not really lazy.

Course things are subjective and all, but I can't see Vanillite or Trubbish as "lazier" designs than something like "pony with fire mane", "rock with eyes", "gears with eyes", or "literally just whack-a-mole"

+Loretta Bes I'm not disagreeing on it's laziness, but I think the prime reason voltorb and electrode were made was for the instance in the power plant where they were item traps for the greedy.

Designs alone doesn't automatically equal cleverness. It's got to have a believable backstory leading to its reasoning of its appearance. For example; Cofagrigus. Oh what? A pokemon that is a coffin? Really? This is one of our creative ghost Pokemon?

Yokai Watch is based off of really Japanese myths. There's a Japanese myth of a nurikabe, which is said to be a wall that impedes or misdirects walking travelers at night. You can't go around it because it can extend its self forever. Pretty cool if you ask me.

Meril was only mentioned because his nickname is blue Pikachu. He's not a clone though, so he's not part of the list. Pichu came in 2nd gen, so even though its a pre-evolve of Pikachu, it was designed AFTER Pikachu and Raichu. Pichu was made with other pokemon babies for a reason, so he counts. Pikachu was made to be cute, so they made a cuter version of him later on, so he counts.
well Maril was originally going to be named Picka-blue it was in one of the the less well known movies.

I was fine with most of the entries, I think there were lazier designs that could be added to this list. The o Pokémon that shouldn’t have been on this list was klefkey. The design seems to be pretty unique and it’s based off of Japanese lore. Being the mischief of fairies stealing shiny objects and carrying around an iron charm to ward off spirits which is where we get the steel fairy typing and it’s design.
