As someone who did upgrade to this... the answer depends on what you currently have and what you want it to do.
Me, I had an old I7-8700. It was barely keeping up in Space Marine 2 as it basically was the minimum requirements, and I'm a huge warhammer 40k fan so not keeping up was kinda a no starter for me and a trigger to upgrade. I was very cpu bottlenecked and barely getting 60fps on the unpoplated areas, 45 in heavy fighting, no matter what resolution/setting I use. Plus below the minimum requirements on several other games I have (meaning 60fps at 1080, and I'm a 1440p >100fps seeker)
I basically wasn't getting even half the performance I wanted with what I had, thus upgraded.
So for me, with the 7800x3d and 9800x3d nearly the same price at launch, I went 9800x3d (though family contributed and made it a Christmas present, that I payed half for lol, so can't state what it will improve me too yet).
If you have a 7800x3d or 14700K, yeah, no need to upgrade imho as the performance increase isn't worth the cost. However if your on an am4 or 9th gen or older Intel... then it might be worth the cost.

I upgraded from a 7800X3D to 9800X3D. Most people's first reaction is "dumb decision, burning money" and so on.
But really, a 30% uplift in the game I play the most is a no-brainer for me. Is like going from the 5700X to the 5700X3D in that specific game. Yeah, maybe the gain is not so big on other games, but I play what I play.

how is it a 30% improvement if your gpu is already bottlenecked? makes no sense and physically impossible because the gpu is far more important. What is the point in buying a cpu that no gpu can keep up with? what is the point in buying a cpu now to benefit in a few years time? there will be more powerful cpus out then. Only upgrade cpu when you buy a new gpu otherwise your wasting money.

@@prussell890 but where did you get the impression that I was GPU bottlenecked?
The 30% uplift is because I was CPU bottlenecked with the 7800X3D. I am still CPU bottlenecked with the 9800X3D, but now with 30% more performance.

@@prussell890 Escape from Tarkov, but I was also CPU limited in BO6 after I changed GPU, but gains were smaller there, closer to 10-15%.
Tarkov is a very simulation intensive and primary core/memory dependent game. It puts an insane strain on CPU performance. On a certain map, 7800X3D could drop as low as 70s, and that was with a 4060Ti at native 1440p res and competitive settings. It was barely using 60% of the 4060Ti.

Thanks for the video. Would be more interesting to compare with 5700x3d instead of 5900x. There is alot of people putting 5700x3Ds into their AM4 system nowadays. And even people building new AM4 system with 5700x3d. It's easily compared to 7600/7600x for gaming. But I like to compare it to R7 7700 since it has the same amount of cores. If 1440p is your goal, the 9800X3D only makes sense to pair with an RTX 4090 or a stronger graphics card.
Because on RX 7900 XTX (RTX 4080 Super) or weaker graphics card 9700X, 7800X3D and 9800X3D will have the same results. Because in that case the GPU is the bottleneck.

    @Vincent-v9q Місяць тому +3

Spoiler: Is it worth upgrading to 9800x3d? - No. Replacing any CPU is not worth the money if your CPU is enough for you.
Buying 9800x3d and comparing at low resolutions is pointless.
You have to answer the question "is my current CPU enough for my tasks?", and then you have to ask yourself "is a new CPU enough for my tasks?"
In the vast majority of games, you will be limited by the GPU, even with 4090 (and 5090). I can't imagine a person who bought 4090/5090 and uses FHD.
Personally, I use 7500F and 4090, at 4K resolution. And I can say that in 99.9% of cases, I do not have enough video card. It is much more reasonable to invest the difference between 7500F and 9800x3d in upgrading the video card. And this difference is now 500-700 dollars. That is, from replacing 4090 with 5090 I will get many times more benefit than from replacing with 9800x3d.
Or if I did not have a 4K OLED monitor (I already have one), these 500-700 dollars could go to upgrading the monitor.
So go back to the beginning of my message and answer 2 questions.
If the first answer is "no" and the second is "yes", then you should buy 9800x3d. If the answers do not match, then it is better to invest money in something from which you will really get a difference in real use, and not just in tests at 720p.

    • @Vincent-v9q
      @Vincent-v9q 15 днів тому

@@prozekutor You completely miss the fact that in 99.99% of games the emphasis will be on the video card (even at minimum fps). If you have a 5090, an OLED 4K 240-480 Hz monitor, then you can probably think about buying a 9800x3d, but even in this case you will get a minimal difference. If you do not have a 5090, then it is worth buying this. Buying a 5090 will give you much more comfort than buying a 9800x3d.
99% of buyers do not understand anything about computer components (you are an example of this) and they need help.

I was hoping for a comparison to the 5800x3D. I am seeing similar issues with my 5800x3D though. I can't get over 60fps in Indiana Jones full RT in the Vatican.
The thing is if you look at the load the game is not using all of the CPU. I rarely see over 60% load and it starts limiting. Not sure what is going on there.
With PT off I can run 140fps or better in the same area on my 5800x3D and 4090.
Cyberpunk by comparison I can run full path tracing everything on ultra and get 80fps or better and it will actually show 90% load on the CPU.
I think what this video really shows that many people chasing after the latest GPU upgrade would be better served to update their CPU first.

Compared to what? is the key to this question. I had a 10 Core Intel 10900K for 4 years , a bit juicy to run but a good solid cpu, unfortunately later Intel , except perhaps 12th gen, not so good. So I thought I would give AMD a go and bought a 7800X3d, undeniably superb for gaming only use, but it lacked grunt for anything else. So I bought a 9800X3d and yes it is only marginally better for gaming than the 7800X3d but overall it's much better CPU, it runs a lot cooler than the 7800X3d and has significantly more grunt for general tasks, it's a very well rounded cpu. It's the fastest you can get, so justifiable, especially when we consider those hardest games where top chips score like ~80 fps. And for given chip it will only get worse, so man should suggest with percentages of difference and worse case scenarios. But in general it's subjective. I wouldn't change CPU for one being less than 50% faster and always, not like X3D sometimes 60, sometimes 5. Maybe a little less if we talk swapping CPU only. And I'm fine with my 13900K getting e.g. ~70 fps in heavier Stalker areas, mostly due to frametime being fine, when 4090 would allow for more, but I get that there're people aiming for higher framerates.

Depending on Game there can be a noticeable difference. On average vs 7800X3D it's not a massive difference.

so, if i own a 500$ cpu, pretty sure my gpu will not be a 350$ gpu... that been said, ruuning a 7800x3d or 9800x3d and a 800$ + gpu, the only games i would not use mex settings are esports/comp games.
my point is, if you test all this games (the games on this videos) on max settings with 1440p or 4k (native) im 100% sure you will be gpu bound... so, for someone with a 7800x3d and taking your video in ming thinking they will get the performance boost if they buy the 9800x3d... well, bad news, you wont because you will be gpu bound when playing max settings, rt on. (only few bad optimized games will be cpu bound on 4k max settings)
if possible, make same video but this time max settings/rt on for all games. curious how better results the 9800x3d are. (the only game that list you can be cpu bound is stalker 2 duo to the game problems near npcs)

would ya say a 9950x for around 300€ is worth it and it still got warranty ? im coming from a ryzen 5 3600 ?

    • @TerraWare

Yeah I'd say so. That's like half the price of what it costs in the US and is a massive upgrade from a Ryzen 3600.

@MrRechtSo Not entirely sure but for power and temp I'm having to use HW Info because 9800X3D won't show up on Msi afterburner like 7800X3D does.

I upgraded from 7800x3d to 9800x3d only because I was excited to try out static all core OC on X3D. Unfortunately, I got a crappy sample, and it can't do more than 5.4ghz all core at 1.2v-1.3v. I could probably get it to work at 5.5+ in games, but unless it's stable in all core workloads, I wouldn't trust it. I have an SP111, which is one of the worst I have seen. My 7800x3d was an SP86, which is also one of the worst ever. I have bad luck with AMD CPUs. Lol.

This comparison is kinda pointless for 1 and .01 lows...your old 5900x has a two ccd penalty...the 9800x3d only has 1 ccd and hence better lows.

Going to a whole new platform is pretty expensive upgrade
At that point $150 difference between 9800x3d and 7800x3d isn't much when mobo and ram already around $300
