It actually was a longer song but the tv show only allowed so much time. Instead of cutting some the song they played as fast as they could. This was a Dutch progressive rock band from the 1970's.
IS a dutch band from Holland . still a band
@@Kgio-2112 The Dutch rock Rock. Now for van Halen.
Do some research before commenting. You can find the original unedited version that's over 6 minutes long on UA-cam. Nothing was shortened for time.
And thus, SPEED METAL was born!
“This is just insane!” Yeah, the best kind of insane! 🎶
The drummer is fantastic!
It helps to be influenced by Buddy Rich, Tony Williams and Elvin Jones, amongst others !
this is musicianship masterclass. just for information: originally, the song is almost double length on the album, but they only had four minutes left on the tv-format. so they decided not to play an excerpt, but double speed. so this is the version for people with humor. listen to it again, this is def not bs.
Apparently the only standing ovation, or one of the few, on this show.
true
I remember watching it on tv in1973. Totally unforgettable. The whole band was great. BTW there is no way to prepare for them. lol
That was some nuts guitar playing!!! Speed, dexterity, timing, musicality
This is the only time I've ever seen a standing ovation on the Midnight Special.
My understanding is it is the only time in the history of the show that the performers were given a standing ovation.
@@IllumeEltanin And very well deserved They were brilliant
@@jonsey156 For a Dutch band,.....not bad....
Right on. I've never seen one before this!
We were stoned teenagers when we first heard this years ago. It’s like they wrote the song for us!
ONLY Full Audience Standing Ovation in the 9 years of The Midnight Special Concert Series. Most times the audience was so high they just sat there digging it. The show was live and started at 12:30am until 2am, and Colleges and University Parties, shut down and everyone put on The Midnight Special, as it was the only way other then at groups concerts that you could catch bands.
Really the only one? Man they have had everyone on that show ! But I'm not really surprised considering the performance . That's a very good accolade , it was earned .
You have to remember, that the show did not air until 1230am, so the audience was usually so high by the time the show started that more often then not, gave a few claps and whistles, and just mellowed. I remember Peter Frampton just killing Do You Feel Like We Do, which was a massive hit then with the crazy talk box solo, which was new to most, and at the end he got a smattering of applause, and that was it. Threw him off, so to see the whole audience go crazy was unusual at best.
I was in high school and watched this performance. We never missed midnight special just like you said. Great performance. Peace from Michigan
@@derekkelly4816 There was Don Kirshner's In Concert series, but it was maybe once a month, sometimes a couple of months apart, which started in 72, but the GO TO was always The Midnight Special. At least in Canada it was.
This band does other things as well. Very, very impressive band.
The lead singer's yodeling is amazing! The most unique song for sure.
So glad you finally got to experience this masterpiece, the studio version is much better, it's slower and more carefully constructed, but they had to speed up to fit the song into the limited time for the show, however I am glad you did this version first because of the visual thrill of watching Thijs Van Leer perform his yodels and flute playing, the man is a genius for sure, and Focus are a great prog rock band for sure and not just a novelty act.
Oh wow, I have to disagree. I like the faster live version much better.
@@bentighe4811 it has it's merits and is fun and it sure shows the skills of Jan Akkerman and Hans Cleuver to their max, but this is not how the song's meant to sound, it was written in a specific time structure and the studio version is much more intricate and complex, however there is no denying the Midnight Special version is fantastic and outlines how good rhe band is and how versatile they are, this was not the only time Midnight Special made bands speed up songs to fit available time slots, checkout the speeded up Fleetwood Mac's Rhiannon, Stevie Nicks had to speed up her vocals so much she sounded like a chipmunk. But I am not one of the purists who derride this version as I said I'm glad they did this version first, as it sure has the fun factor the studio version lacks.
@@simply_psi, your opinion is valid. So is mine; that I prefer this version.
@@bentighe4811 that's why music is so important, we may have different opinions but it's the love of music we all share that is so important, at the end of the day great music is just that great and this is a great song performed by exceptional musicians, I can't argue with that, in fact I do like this version, and this would always be the version I would use to introduce people to Focus, like I would always recommend Vitamin C by Can as an introduction to them it's not their most complex or involving song but it's a great way to understand the band.
Didn't
I couldn't wait to see your reactions! The FIRST yodeling rock song - straight outta Amsterdam! They were so OUT THERE, they were COOL! LOL 😁
Its called talent. The seventies had the greatest talent and then the suits took over.
First-Ever Standing Ovation on that 1973 programme for this Dutch Group.
They had to play a 7-minute sing in a 4-minute slot so you were right :)
That was British sarcasm saying they were "chilled" HOWEVER some of their other songs are VERY chilled like "Sylvia" and my favourite "Love Remembered" where , if you close your eyes, you can imagine being in the desert :)
Jan Akkerman was the best gitarist of the world in 1973, BB King was a great fan of him
This was on the Tv Show the midnight special. Gladys Knight was the host that introduced them. She was a popular R&B artist with "Gladys Knight and the Pips"
This song is s combination of musical knowledge (Thys van Leer studies composition, coumterpoint and the insttuments he played as well), inspiration, creativity, sense of humor and genius im doing something really original. And Jan Alkermann, one of the most talented and creative guitarist ever.
This is a CLASSIC. I just introduced my young friends to this song.. the reaction is ALWAYS priceless.. LOL
During this time there were a lot of new bands in Germany and in England it was called Krautrock. Everyone tried things out and had new ideas. Focus is a Bavarian band that turned everyone upside down and they were very good musicians. At this time I didn't like it at all, but later I knew that they were making a difference here. Then came bands like "Can" or "Kraftwerk" which achieved worldwide success. Not everything was to my liking but they brought German rock out there and Focus was one of the first to do so. Best regards @all from hamburg (germany)
Great reaction - hilarious!!😊
I know you guys aren't sure what to make of this song, but let me tell you that when I was in high school and this song came on, it got turned up! I think the studio recording is better because they were going crazy on stage! Haha! I love it!
They were forced to take a 7 min song and play it in 5 mins ( hence the speed) so that advertisers could try to convince people to buy some nachos, Focus were a brilliant band ,Thijs van Leer, and guitarist Jan Akkerman got most of the attention but the whole combo were masters of their trade. Wish there were bands half as good as them around today !!
Dude, you can literally find the original unedited version that's over 6 minutes long on UA-cam. Nothing was shortened for time
Everybody has said just about everything about this song, etc.. One thing you should know is that one reason they made this song was that they didn't know much English, so they wanted to make something that could span language. Yodeling wasn't even something Thijs van Leer normally did. He was just like, "Sure, I can yodel. Let's try it.".
Focus were/are a progressive rock band - this song is their "let's see how much fun we can have" song, but the band has many more excellent songs - "Eruption", "Sylvia", and "Questions? Answers! Answers? Questions!" are all great tunes! If you consider a full-album reaction, their album "Hamburger Concerto" is top-notch as a full composition rather than just single songs.
So many good songs! ❤️
I bet Thijs van Leer ( the vocalist/flutist/jodeler) has watched this review, he is still alive and going strong!
I never, ever tire of seeing people's facial expressions when they hear this crazy tune for the first time. Everyone I've watched watching it has the same initial look of disbelief and then a broad smile comes across their faces. I remember hearing this instrumental as a kid. It was played slower. It was almost double speed here because they Midnight Special TV show would only give the band about 3 minutes for a song that is normally much longer. Crazy stuff. You will never forget it.
They only had 4 minutes to perform a 7 minute song and they didn't want to cut anything, so they decided to play at double the speed. So the 5 minutes to live was pretty accurate.
"Our brains are melting now - we don't know what to say". :D That's pretty much what *we* thought too back in the day.
This was Focus. A contradictial band from the Netherlands. With Thijs van Leer organ - flute - vocals, Jan Akkeman lead guitar, Bert Ruiter base guitar snd Pierre van der Linden drums. Thijs and Jan had constant quarrels and the band didn't last long. But the music they made was absolutely sensational.
hahaha...🤣 O My! you guys kept me in stitches. Oh come on George haven't you heard of a prank before! lol When I watch this I can't help but laugh and stand pretending to play the drums! It's as though someone put the studio version on and then changed the speed to play twice as fast.. lol GREAT REACTION< Masterpiece 🔥🤘🤣🧡🧡
Yes, long song, short time allowed. What a perfectly insane result!!
Rock musicians are legendary for their sense of humor and outrageousness. That’s what you just witnessed.
I’m telling you, my pick is Rock Solid.
It’s a definitive Heavy Metal song from some of the best to ever do it. Just do it. It’s excellent. Again, my personal guarantee guys.
This song as a yodeling it jams and rocks...its experience to watch it live
There were never words to describe this wild tune❗❗❗
I’m currently in a cafe in Cape Town and the guy sitting along from me looks the spitting image of Patrick. 😮
In fact the song is 3 time longer, but they have to do it in 4 minutes - the show rule. This show was for 9 years, and this was the ONLY one that the crowd react standing ovations.
Chill & laid back this ain't!! I was laughing when u said that George. I was like Ohh this is gonna be good!! U said u haven't ever heard anything like that B4 & U won't. It's extremely unique & that's what many love about this . . It was different. Thnx Patrick & George .. I absolutely loved ur reactions to this track .. it's one of my fave reactions from y'all. Keep up the great work .. b safe. ✌🏼😊👌🏼😁
There were playing the song at roughly double speed as The Midnight Special wouldn't give them to play the full song. LMAO
I love this version.
They are still performing. I se them open for ce ASIA ay Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada on July 4, 2024!
This was actually popular back in the day... I still hear this on rock radio today.. its a classic tune...lol.. with a sense of humor..
I think I prefer this version to the studio, it has tonnes of energy and visual excitement but also the riff sounds amazing at this tempo
The only standing ovation there wow
Were you surprizised, guys? Focus was a band from Nederlands. Just like Shocking Blue. They performed in US.( Lady introducing the band was Gladys Knight i think). US TV network insisted to make nearly 7 minutes song shorter and gave them only 4 minutes to perform. They decided not to make it shorter but to give it a full speed instead. You saw what happened yourself.
Focus is still a band, with the same keyboard/vocalist and drummer.
Happy, happy, happy! They also used this song for a Nike commercial. I also prefer this fast version above the " 7 minutes, slower" one.99
The song (not a reaction) had been in my UA-cam feed for months and I kept passing by it....
But I finally watched it and OH MY GOD!! THE CREATIVITY IS OFF THE CHARTS!!
You can see that they pulled from all of their influences.
They are Dutch (Holland) I am not sure... if so, the yodeling
They are all classically trained, the composition.
Rock and Roll, obviously.
And a bit of Scatman Crothers.
The fact that they sped up the tempo to fit into the confines of the slot they had in the show demonstrates that they are great musicians.
That is what makes a Great reaction is coming in blind and being pleasantly surprised :) ..I`ve loved this ever since I was a kid,my brothers and I played this record a lot! Keep On Rockin'
Amazing musicians. Way ahead of their time. You owe it to yourselves to listen to their album Moving Waves. its a masterpeice
It's a 10 out of 10 no doubt and as good as the day it came out.Had this album for a long time !!
Great album been listening to it for over 40 years.
And mother focus. Their new material is great too
He’s whistling now! 😂
And the crowd goes wild.
Never heard of Focus, one of the greatest European bands with the most tremendous guitarist in Jan Akkerman?
You both look FANTASTIC!!
The sheer talent of Focus. This is grace under pressure. The pressure was the time slot they had. Perform they did. Standing ovation is proof.
Sooooo glad, you guys finally get to do a reaction to this Masterpiece !
Gotta love 70's music. Great, funny, reaction guys.😁👍💜🎶✌
The whistling is my favorite part.
They all pushed it for sure and had fun, but what a drummer to force it all through. This group literally burst overnight in England onto the music scene and soon rewarded us with the wonderful Moving Waves LP, theyare all so talanted - PLEASE react to the 'Eruption' excerpt from that, their 2nd album - you will hear some fantastic prog rock and arrangements - guaranteed.
It's called yodeling. This song was huge when it came out. Listen to the studio version :)
Geniuses at work.
Great reacion A long time ago And sorry for my late reaction He had only 10 minutes to get on stage haha I drove the policecar and my mate took over his car A bizarre ride but we made it Just seen it In 1978 when I was stil a cop We recieved a call from him He had to perform in our city but was lost He drove in a mini cooper So we helped him to get on time for the concert He was a remarkle man I was already a fan from Focus so after the concert he invited us and gave us free tickets for there new concert as VIP's haha Something you will never forget., Great reaction from you Greetings from an Old Dutchman
My Brothers, just try to imagine hearing this in 1973!!! Was on the radio! But his voice is almost spot on on every note, amazing....GREAT react! Keep on....
Your reactions here are priceless! Stop it George, you’re making me laugh right along with you 😂
I was ten in 1970 we called it rock and roll.
Super crazy and fantastic tune!! It's so catchy and you can't stay still when it's playing. We recently watched the film Baby Driver and it appeared in the film..we were dancing around the room air drumming 🎶😉👍 Much love from the UK guys
You should listen to 'Tommy'from their moving waves album. This band was my top band as a teenager. Jan Akkerman on guitar is a legend. Thys van leer hald it together. Their albums are incredible - especially Focus III.
Here’s another chill song I keep asking for. It’s Classic Badass Hard Rock and one of this bands best songs. No one will complain about you playing it. Again, I know all this stuff. These guys I saw in concert 18 times from very early on. All separate tours. JUDAS PREIST: Riding On The Wind! (studio version only please) it’s cleaner for a first listen. I keep asking for trust so I have to state my credentials again.
AC⚡️DC 6 times, YES 6 times, PANTERA 6 times, SRV once, IRON MAIDEN 18 times, RUSH 18 times, QUEENSRYCHE 21 times. All this goes on and on. I’ve been a fan and concert goer since the 70’s. I know good Rock. Play the song. LOUD. I guarantee it.
Couple more, PINK FLOYD 3 times, BLACK SABBATH 4 times, OZZY 5 times. On and on. That’s maybe 1/3 of my concerts. Maybe.
Focus = when rock and roll had balls!
Yeah, when I heard you say that you were told that this was a 'chill song' I just lol, man this song is anything but 'chill', this is a crazy song! I remember it when it first came out, thinking 'I really get into this music, but then, yodeling?, what the hell?!' Ya know? That's how it was with everybody back then, when they heard it, ya know, loved the music, but the yodeling and that high pitch note he'd hit, we'd end up laughing and digging it a the same time. It's cool you guys get to experience it.
“Is this cool as hell or is this just weird stuff?”
The answer to your question is “yes”.
My trust is shattered. LOL.
Perfect, gentlemen , perfect….insane and brilliant
Lol - "you must perform in 5 minutes"...yes; they were on Red Bull at least;) Entertaining tho!
Ha Ha!!!! It sure was fun watching you guys with this one! When I saw this on my alert I said to myself.....this is gonna be good!!! And it was! You guys never disappoint! I had their album Hocus Pocus by Focus back when they were originally out.... I listened to that album over and over! This live version is a hoot! Very talented group tho! It was funny watching you two ready to chill !" 😃😃Thanks guys!!
He shredded that flute
of its time .. glad you appreciate creativity no matter what era !!
Great reaction guys, I loved the look on your faces. They were on a time limit and didn't want to shortin it so they speed it up, and this has a lot more views than the correct version, briiiiant. Reminder Liliac dear father. Thanks guys and stay safe.
Dude, you can literally find the original unedited version that's over 6 minutes long on UA-cam. Nothing was shortened for time
Woo Hoo thanks you guys perfect timing. This Nanna needed to hear this now!!!!!!!! the 70's love it. omg midnight special came on friday nights at midnight..... all these classic bands.... it was on for yrs it was a faster as it was on tv. They tried to get as many artisits on as possible in the hour. Zepplin could have came on next...
The person that suggest this song as 'chill' was joking with you guys. It was stated that the band played fast on purpose. Yes, the producers told them they had to shorten their performance, because the time was short, so they decided to really speed it up. This is what they did. It is a humorous and unexpected experience, to say the least. lol
The song was weird and cool as hell. That band has major talent.
LOL! I agree with you, what are you supposed to say?
“Thank you guys so much!”… for playing such a shocking joke on you?? 😳
😂😂😂Oh well, I was shocked too, as a lot of us were I’m sure.😆 But it was funny and you guys were very gracious about it. Thanks for not getting too upset with anyone over it! Your faces made this video go down as one of your all-time classics!
KEEP ROCKIN!🤘💋
It is called humor, that which in unexpected can be funny and therefore makes you laugh. This is just humor in music, an escape from the usual or normal. The question is, were you entertained?
i saw that live on t.v. watching Burt Sugarman's Midnight Special!!! was quite an amazing experience.
You are...two wild and crazy guys!
Lmfao I love your reaction!!!🤣🤣🤣 I couldn’t even understand wth was going on💀💀💀
I was a kid when I first heard this and it was outrageous..............the studio version is unparalleled.
This live version is not one I've seen before (at least I can't remember) and it seems to me to be too fast. I remember having the single of the studio version which I absolutely loved. In my opinion it is really good and this live version doesn't do it justice. Focus were a Dutch rock band and I think this song was originally released in 1971 or thereabouts. Maybe try the studio version and see what you think, as I said I had the single and loved it. There were so many bands around in the early 70s, so many different sounds, it was a very experimental time! Focus also did an instrumental titled Sylvia - I loved it and had the single. Thanks for your reaction, guys, it was really interesting.
It is indeed a lot faster but that's because they had to for the live broadcast. And Focus didn't want to cut the song short so decided to play it a little faster then the original recording.
@@rubentullenaar2934 Eight minute song, sped up for the five minutes the show gave to them.
I actually like this verson better, because i thought the slow one was too drawn out and boring. This one was crazy, funny and cool plus great !!!
Check out the Studio Version as well...
Thank you for the review!
The name of the song is Hocus Pocus, afterall.
5:45 "These guys are mental." Yeah, pretty much. 😂😂🤣🤣
But part of it was them speeding the song up so that they could fit it into a short segment, but, still, it's a strange song.
11/3/22
What a fun reaction you guys are so awesome I left the whole time 🥰🥰😁😁🙌🙌🤓🤓🤟🤟
I saw what song. Then thought, oh my goodness these guys going to freak out.
The only other Dutch band I know is Golden Earring... That was crazy.
11/3/22
To answer your question, it's cool as hell.
Great little tune
Nice one ✌️😎🎶
As a Freak by Nature i love it since it was released!
This has never been a laid back song ! Whoever said had to be messing with y’all. LOL !
Diamond Head - Am I Evil.........A MUST!!!!!
The Midnight Special allowed performers 3:38 to play their songs this is a a little longer than 6:00 so instead of cutting the song they sped it up to fit. This is what entertainment was before cooperate media decided money was more important than talent. How does this come about. Individuality.
