  • How Hollywood's Mafia KILLED Jackie Wilson
The sermons at the Mississippi church were falling on Wilson’s deaf ears, but heeding the preacher’s words may have kept Wilson out of trouble. You see, Wilson lacked a strong role model. Back at his home in Detroit, Jackie faced a heartbreaking home life. Dad was generally not around. He was a big drinker and usually out of work.

I have to agree. It saddens me profoundly to see this wonderfully talented , NEVER to be emulated or imitated SUPER MEGA performer in that state. Mr. Wilson was better than ALL OF THEM. His voice, Charisma, looks, bearing etc….. has to this day no equal. It’s truly sad because in a different scenario with a proper support system, he could have been the one people talk about endlessly instead of Elvis Presley. He could have been the Michael Jackson of his time, actually better. As it stands I still hold him as the yardstick by which all other artists are measured.

@@ddlee202257 Thanks. I truly believe that and I agree wholeheartedly with Berry Gordy when he stated in another interview that to this day there has not been another entertainer with the VOICE and all around package that Jackie Wilson had in surplus. He was ultra MASCULINE and there was not a hint of the stupidity of the adrogonous nonsense ( Prince, MJ, etc….) that would become a staple of male artists from the 60s going forward . He didn’t need help. No half naked women, no gimmicks, props, an army of dancers on stage, voice enhancements etc…. He WAS THE REAL DEAL. Even if he didn’t dance, he could have just sat on a stool and captivated audiences with that Super hero vocal ability. And looking like a million dollars while doing it. That era did not deserve him. I wonder at times how different things could have worked out for him if he had a strong father in the house 🏠 and if his pairing with Berry Gordy had stayed intact and he was signed to Motown, a black owned company that actually protected him and insulated him from the corruptive forces from other companies that preyed on Black artists. I have absolutely ZERO DOUBT that Mr. Wilson would have been the BIGGEST MALE STAR 🌟 Not just from that era but for several decades and more because he would have raised the bar REAL high.

Hey you can believe what you want but facts say otherwise...Whatever rhythm Elvis had--and he had plenty!--was developed well before he heard Jackie Wilson or Little Richard.... for instance he has recounted the impact of Arthur Crudup's guitar playing that he witnessed in a juke joint as a teenager and Elvis was a very good rhythm guitar player ....also as a kid he often attended a Black church where he heard rompin' stomplin' gospel that also formed him....listen to his first few recordings on Sun Records, which were regional hits before Little Richard had started to record in the rock 'n' roll style of "Tutti Frutti", and you'll hear his vocal style at that time had no resemblance to Little Richard. He did after his 1956 breakthrough record a couple of Little Richard tunes which he sang in more or less Richard's style but Elvis sang in a lot of different styles, which was one of his gifts...vocally he was influenced by everything from Black gospel and blues to bluegrass singers and Bing Crosby and Dean Martin ballad singing....by the way did you know that one of Jackie Wilson's major influences was Al Jolson?

@@9772 what does it mean to say an artist "stole" another artist's style? those artists still had their style, it wasn't taken away from them; Black artists often appropriate elements of other artists (Black and sometimes White) also... artists are always influenced by other artists and various styles are music..most start out imitating someone or something, sometimes many ... Ray Charles started out vocally singing in a sort of Charles Brown vein, for instance...the best artists grow beyond that to achieve a uniquely personal style..Lumping Elvis in with Pat Boone (a good ballad singer but a hopeless rock 'n' roll singer) and Georgia Gibbs( who just straight up copied --in an inferior way--Black singers) is ridiculous... Elvis always acknowledged his debt and admiration for Black artists (he once told a roomful of journalists that "the real king of rock 'n' roll is over there", pointing at Fats Domino. He definitely singled out Jackie Wilson as being great. Let's talk facts: Elvis music was influenced by many things: gospel (both Black and White styles) , blues, r 'n' b, country/bluegrass, pop balladry and more. His first few recordings had a blues tune on one side and a country song on the other--but in both cases he and his band created a unique approach that blended elements of both. That said, Elvis would not have been Elvis if he hadn't learned from and been influenced by various Black music; and he wouldn't have been the same artist if he hadn't been influenced also by country music, White gospel styles (The Blackwoods) for instance, and Dean Martin balladry. That said, I'm not a huge Elvis fan...but I still recognize his talent, originality and cultural impact. What people get twisted is that the problem wasn't that Elvis "stole" anything... the problem was that racism in the music business prevented Black artists from getting a fair shot--up until rock 'n' roll exploded in 1955-1956, when Black artists started to get on pop radio because the kids wearing hearing them and they loved them. Little Richard and Chuck Berry have both stated that Elvis helped open that door for Black artists.

My only question is how come we as a society are quick to rewrite the wrongs of powerful black men that victimize others like Cosby, Diddy, or R. Kelly. But we don’t go back and get all that publishing for the many black artist that were robbed of their money?

I wonder why didnt Gordy sign Jackie Wilson to Motown. My Great Grand Ma and Great Aunt went to his funeral. He died the same day as Mj Pepsi Commercial accident happened. My Great Gran also said the scene on 5 Heartbeats of Big Red hanging the man out of the window. It was Really Jackie Wilson and Turnapole hung him out the window for asking about his money.

To my knowledge, Jackie signed a long-term contract with Brunswick Records. Therefore Berry Gordy couldn't add Jackie Wilson to the Motown organization. IMHO

@ddlee202257 Berry Gordy could had bought him out of that contract. Esp since he was the reason Berry had money to open Motown

I wonder who decided to name Elvis Presley the king of rock and roll when his whole style was stolen from other artists even his biggest hits were not his own but covers of other artist . Right now in 2024 you have 14 15 year old teenagers who could sing Fleetwood Mac or Led Zeppelin n my personal experiences I don’t know anyone white or black who has Elvis in their playlists except maybe someone born in the 1950’s

I know many personally. And there are tons of famous artists like Kanye West that love Elvis. Listen to Suspicious Minds and tell me he’s not great. I know Ray Charles hated him but it really didn’t become popular until Fight the Power. And Ray Charles covered tons of white artists. Not to minimize Charles’s brilliant songwriting. Just saying, most artists respected him. And I love the Beatles and Bob Dylan but Stevie Wonder had better covers than their originals. Miss R&B. Even in the 90’s you still had artists covering each other. It was great.

@@philhoughton3677 that’s very true sir , but as so called conisuer of music even from that era of music amongst white musicians and singers Elvis would not make my top ten .. even if we take race out of the picture I’ve always said Elvis was way overrated.
