Red is the Strongest, he beat team rocket in its strongest state, beat the elite four right after blue, and beat him, he has more experience in battling than gold, because he spent 3 years training in Mount silver . He goes to other regions to participate in tournaments. So we can agree, even with all the other protagonists, he is a tough opponent to beat

my favorite bits of fanart, comics and fanfic is when there are headcanons where some people look at Red and see him as this incredibly strong, mysterious trainer that nobody talks to or visits unless their crazy or super brave- And then the characters actually talk to Red and he's just this cute little cinnamon roll who adores his pokemon and is just super awkward and kinda clingy and eventually there's this conversation about how lots of people thought he went up to the mountain to train and become stronger but Really he went up there to make sure his Snorlax had enough to eat every day and just- ah I love Red.

Red was the only trainer where you have no choice but to use legendary pokemon to defeat him... that lvl 81 pikachu nearly gave me a heart attack the first time I saw him.
