      @@RESPONDI433 Interestingly, the BBC's news reporting of this year's event was more about the people, and the protests, rather than the race. They reported on it as though they'd never had anything to do with it in the first place. Typical of the current BBC.

    Crikey I remember this like it was yesterday!
    When I was a kid I was lucky enough to have visits to Red Rum's stable in Southport where my grandmother lived & Rummy had a huge liking for Polo mints & the huge 70's collar of my shirt. Ginger McCain said him nibbling my collar was lucky & sure enough I have always picked National Winners (the only time I ever bet!)
    This apparent luck even extended to this non race as I had £2 to win on beautiful Esha Ness!
    Poor Esha & rider. You were still winners to me! x

    I think it's basically the fact that the gates are a big hurdle (pardon the pun) for trainers to overcome as well as training horses to jump fences. The quality of training would deteriorate and injuries could be more likely. With flat racing, the gates are a bigger part of training than people think :P

    • @awuma

    It never ceases to amaze me that they insist on using a tape to start a race that is over four and a half miles long ... they might as well introduce starting stalls, that's how ridiculous it is.
    Just a white line painted across the grass, tell the jockeys not to cross the line until the starter shouts. If a horse is a bit behind the rest, what the hell difference does it make over this distance?

    • @ebojfmdboojoh4023
      @ebojfmdboojoh4023 5 років тому +3

      Exactly, I feel the starter could have let them go long before the tape was breached. There was no horse miles behind. I'm not sure if they've moved the crowd further back from the start but the crowd so close certainly didn't help matters

    I remember the day so well. The first thing to say is that it wouldn’t have happened but for the animal rights protesters being on the course and causing the first delay. They are never mentioned or shown on TV, but read any article about the 1993 national and there were protestors there on the course who had to be removed by force. When the tape eventually went up it didn’t go up properly, but the jockeys realised it was a false start. The second time the tape got caught around horses feet and Richard Dunwoody’s neck. There was a system in place that if jockeys didn’t see the flag go up at the start a second flagwaver would stop them further down the course, but the jockeys just didn’t see him, or if they did they thought it was protestors on the course and kept going. It’s easy to watch on TV and assume they must have known it was a void race, but in the chaos that broke out how could they know? It’s just very lucky that no one was hurt or worse that day and it brought about big changes in how they deal with the start. What I don’t think they will ever stop is protestors who profess to care for animals and then behave in ways that could cause horses, bred to race and well looked after, to come to serious harm.

    The crowd are trying to tell the jockeys that the 2nd race is also a false start. The red flag didn't unfurl and so most of the jockeys didn't realise until it was too late. There had been some animal rights protestors invade Aintree earlier in the afternoon and most of the jockeys assumed it had happened again so kept racing right to the end.

    That old duffer with the flag should NEVER have been near that position of starter. Back on that day I sat there watching and it was obvious that the horses were FAR too close to the tape. The Starter should have had them ALL turn round and come back in at least 10 yards off the tape.
    It made us a complete laughing stock !!
    Arguably (at that time) the most famous race in the World and we had some old duffer put in charge of the start !! Still makes me cringe to look at this shambles

    A lot of the jockeys say, they can here the on course commentator as they ride around the course, did this on course commentator announce the race was void? As i can hear him still commentating on the race.

    • @InuKun2008
      @InuKun2008 4 роки тому

      In so far as horses from other European countries like Ireland and France can and do compete, yes. It's only called the Grand National because it's considered the greatest steeplechase race in Britain.

    The helpers could have led up the stragglers, jocks to blame too.Too much faffing about, as it's such a long race it would not have mattered if a few were a bit left behind. Tapes around necks, just awful. Terrible for the finishers, because they all jumped so well and it was those blasted animal rights demonstrators , was their fault.

    I cant believe by sounds of it that the on course commentator in the background is commentating as if the race is ON. Surely he could have bought some kind of sensibility to this fiasco. (unless he didnt realise either). The jockeys surely would have picked up the tanoy commentary and realised!!

    • @BritishRaceCaller
      @BritishRaceCaller 4 роки тому

      I know it is an old post but in those days the Radio 5 commentary was pumped around the course over the speakers and the team did an excellent job explaining what was happening but jockeys cant hear them.

    • @InuKun2008
      @InuKun2008 4 роки тому +1

      Jockeys aren't listening to the commentary. They are focused on their own horse and trying to win, so background noise is simply filtered out by the brain.

    Who gives a shit! Exactly as I would have done, charged on anyway, that's the spirit of the national and good on the BBC for continuing their coverage as things were too far advanced to recall again. Esher Ness deserved the win and time record, false-start or no false-start. They ran a good race nonetheless showing courage, dedication and spirit. As for the nine other starters, unlucky, as it would have been had they faltered out of a gate or had any other technical hitches apart from the tape.
