    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Andy (Anne Hathaway) interviews to be Miranda's (Meryl Streep) assistant and despite everything going against her, makes an impression.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Lauren Weisberger's best-selling novel about a young woman who stumbles into the hectic worlds of high fashion and publishing comes to the big screen in this comedy. Andrea "Andy" Sachs (Anne Hathaway) is a bright young woman from the Midwest who has just graduated from college and wants to work as a magazine writer. Andy has applied for a job at "Runway," America's most prestigious fashion journal; though Andy has little to no interest in the garment trade, they are one of the only magazines in New York with a job opening -- second assistant to editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). As Andy quickly learns, Miranda is a diva with plenty of power within the magazine business and she isn't afraid to use it, and though Andy lands the job (primarily by being in the right place at the right time), she soon learns that working for Miranda could test the patience of a saint thanks to her endless demands and refusal to acknowledge the end of a work day. Andy struggles to hold on to the job and her sanity, knowing that a recommendation from Miranda can open nearly any door at any magazine, but can she handle the pressure without losing her mind along the way? The Devil Wears Prada also stars Stanley Tucci, Emily Blunt, and Adrian Grenier.

yup I agree. She turned up to an interview for a PA job and didn't even know the name of the executive she would be assisting. Nor had she read the publication she was applying to work for. I don't sympathise with her friends or boyfriend either. She's found a career she's interested in and to get started she needs to put in some long hours and take every opportunity and promotion she can. If she was doing her articles or her residency then the hours would be worse. ANd if she got promoted over someone else then she would take it.

To be fair, she did not do well in this interview. She wasn't prepared, she knew nothing about the company, she wasn't dressed neatly and she didn't seem excited to work there. She wouldn't have gotten any job with a performance like that. But this movie is great nonetheless.

Is it REALLY bad that she looks much better in the red shirt in the scene directly after this when she's with her friends in the bar? When she went in to meet with Miranda Priestly, she was CLEARLY nervous, she was stuttering, she looked ridiculous (like a high school dork in a frumpy shirt) and she had NO clue who this woman was, what she did, or why she was there. She didn't care. She could have at least done at hour's worth of research and TRIED to care about getting this job. She even ADMITS to her boyfriend that her sense of fashion sucks and then she spends the movie basically waffling between being a victim and acting like she's above them.

"Basically it's either this or Auto Universe." The first time that I watched this movie, I sympathized with Andy. But the more I watch it, the more I get the point: throughout the movie, she is constantly playing the victim about how her boss and co-workers treat her. But she made it clear from the start that she thinks of herself as superior to everyone else around her and she has no interest in the fashion world, so how are they supposed to respect her?

When she says that line, I now think "You shouldn't have said that." It's like saying she has to choose between two shitty jobs and this one was the sounded the least shitty. I get she needs a job but she has to impress the boss to make it sound like she's done research on this company and knows about it.

let's not forget her accents. She gets every little detail on point. If you watch all of her movies you'll notice she never walks or talks the same for every part. Her voice literally sounds like someone else's, and she never ever goes even a little out of character. She is honestly superb. and she could perfectly be a brat about it but everyone always says how nice is to work with her, how inspiring and hard-working she is and how she loves to help younger actors. The day she stops acting will be a very sad day.

Other than that, Andy was horrible in the interview. @StarSparkleofficial 8 місяців тому +5

I also got the same vibes. She starts the movie with a huge "i'm not like the other girls" energy. What makes her better is that she grows as a person and as a worker, she starts not understand why her fellow coleages are giving their best and only changes when Nigel gives her a reality check that helped her to grow and understand how that world works instead of keep playing the victim and thinking she deserves praise for not even doing the bare minimum that job requires.
I remember when i first watched this movie when i was 15 and thinking Miranda was a heartless soul and Andy was another victim of that woman, now i rewatched and i think Andy totally deserved all that criticism, she was disconnected from reality and thought she was superior because of that. Irl, she would never have been hired.

Andy got the job because she turned around, squeaked on her shoes, and talked back very confidently--that she was really smart, a very hard worker and that she learned very quickly. Miranda's bitchiness in this scene was a test, to see if Andy had what it took to be her assistant. If Andy folded and left with her tail between her legs, then Miranda knew she wasn't cut out for the position. But Andy didn't fold--she got a little angry and she spoke up. That and Andy's impressive resume (which Miranda already knew about as soon as she read a bit of the resume) is what got Andy the job. Interest in fashion and the magazine was incidental, because those are not the skills one needs to make it in a very cutthroat world.

0:41 "And before today you had never heard of... me?" Her delivery of that line is divine; no blustering, no overdone contempt, not even bothering to be offended by it, just the sort of absolute confidence that most dictators with god complexes WISH they had.
Also, since Miranda wasn't present when Andy asked Emily who she was, that means Miranda knew Andy had never heard of her just from reading her at the interview. Presumably, she guessed from the fact that Andy was showing typical interview nerves rather than the awe and fear that Miranda's used to.

The more I watch this film - and I love it, I watch it often - the more I realize that it is mostly about letting go of youthful idealism and expectation about what work is and also how clinging to those ideals make you a shitty worker. And that by shedding them, you can actually excel at what you do - ohh and that pretty much everyone in Andy's life sucks. Can't forget her shitty, entitled friends and boyfriend.
Sure, Miranda is harsh and rude in this interview - and in the whole movie - and I don't think that the film rose-colors that much if at all. After all, Andy does eventually quit and appears better off for it. But when you think about what is actually happening in this interview, Miranda and the whole Runway ethos becomes much more sympathetic and understandable. It fits in beautifully with the honesty of the film.
We are talking about a workplace which is internationally renowned, both in its own industry and in general. And so, Andy's attitude surrounding the work and the job as something that she can do well because "she is smart" and "works hard", even though she doesn't respect what a big deal the company AND its Editor-In-Chief, whom she knows nothing about, unsurprisingly doesn't engender any respect from Miranda. What a shock. This is the genesis of the shitty attitude - that she is actually better than everyone that she works with because she's smart and fashion is superfluous - that Nigel calls her on some thirty minutes later.
I also think it's very telling how confused Andy is that Miranda doesn't appear interested in her "accomplishments". Sure, she's clearly bright, went to a good school, and has confidence, but there is nothing specifically about her or her experience that suggests that she will be successful in the role she is interviewing for. She comes to it unpolished, she ADMITS that she isn't competitive in the NYC job market IN HER CHOSEN FIELD within a few moments of the interview, that she knows little about fashion and appears not to care about the professional gravity of the place she is interviewing at, and then she is upset when her award for journalism, something that has no bearing on whether or not she can actually do what Miranda needs her to do, doesn't impress her. Like, why should it? After all, it didn't impress enough "serious" journalists in New York to consider her applications, either.
Miranda is just being transparent about, you know, what every other organization she applied to was thinking about her candidacy. It's honest about what it's like to work - and it resonates with me so much more as a person who has been working for a while than it did watching it as a college student when it first came out. Looking at it with adult eyes, I don't think this film is really about "surviving an awful boss who sucks" as much as it is about how working with a demanding supervisor who holds themselves, their organization, and the people who work for them to an incredibly high standard can be a transformative and ultimately positive experience for us.

Thank you. I always thought the book was about surviving the boss rom hell, but I ended up relating more to Miranda and Runway in the movie. Not everybody gets their dream job at the first go. Some people never get their dream job. It doesn't mean you can't take some pride in your work and strive to do well. I also thought her friends and boyfriend were unsupportive about her wanting to do well.

    • @yf-n7710
      @yf-n7710 Рік тому +1

I'd like to contest the idea that her friends and boyfriend are entitled. They are trying to help her. We can contest whether their brand of "help" is actually helping. But that is, without a doubt, their goal. When they try to pull her away from her job, they fully and wholeheartedly believe that the job is harmful to Andy's mental health, and they are doing it for Andy. Andy then ends up pushing them away, and they *still* try to help her for almost a year before giving up.
That is not what I call entitled.
As for whether the job actually is bad for Andy's mental health? I think it is. A job that is good for your mental health will involve praise when you do something well; not just scolding when you do it wrong. The most praise I can remember Andy getting from Miranda before Paris is when she finds the Harry Potter manuscript. And there is no verbal praise there, simply a smile. For completing an impossible task. By this point she is months into her job, and it's the first positive anything that she's gotten from her boss. No, Miranda's not evil. She's a complicated character. But complicated means she's not a saint, either. She does not treat her employees well at all, and that's what Andy's friends see, and that's what they try to take her away from. They'd be perfectly happy for Andy to work that job if Miranda were nicer to her.

Acting in this movie is in another level specially Merlyn. Natural and scary. She literally lives her role.

It's funny how people judge Miranda and people like her as : interested more in the looks and physic of others , she hired Andy which means she's beauty with brains ❤️

Miranda was impressed how Andrea was confident, even though she never knew anything about the company, nor Miranda. But hey, that was the a start to show that she wasn't afraid of Miranda. I think throughout the movie Andrea wasn't like everybody else in the company. Only fear that she will lose the job, and that is it.

Part of the long list of things I love about Miranda Priestly is that she's a villain. And she doesn't have to be an over-the-top, evil villain, and she can have humanity, but ultimately, she is not redeemed or anything. There is just something so great about just having the character that you love to hate and hate to love.

“Miranda” will always be my favorite Meryl Streep character. Everything about her look in this movie was fire! 👀🔥 The haircut, makeup, & clothes are literal perfection. And she’s right-“everybody wants to be us”. She made me want to level up & dress classier.

The book is even better..and shows how Miranda and Andy came from similar backgrounds and family. Miranda had to work to get where she is and knew Andy had more in her than what she was giving. A good read and many more details than the movie shows

Streep is the only actor I know who turns her props into characters. Notice also the slamming of the drawer, her glasses, her hands, head tilting, her earlobes while delivering the iconic line: no no that's not a question. etc.
