Songs like this brought a greater female audience to their concerts and fan base, which had traditionally been heavily male. My wife and I chose this as the recessional at our wedding.
Indeed, and Genesis from a legendary innovative prog band turned in good pop band like many others... I love Genesis's Gabriel era and I like the two following album with Steve Hackett still in. Not else. My girlfriend hate them, and that's fucking good! 😂
As for more reactions to Genesis, you should look at both the Peter era, the Phil era, and also the very short and yet still interesting Ray Wilson era; Ray was the singer Mike and Tony chose as the new frontman after Phil left. And try to listen to as many live versions as possible. Their studio recordings are great, but live the guys regularly proved their immense talent; it’s not a coincidence that Genesis belong to the greatest live bands of all times. Home By The Sea/Second Home By The Sea for example: Watch the live version from 1987 at the Wembley Stadium, it’ll blow you away.
If you want a true progressive rock example from the band, Firth of Fifth from Selling England by the Pound would be a good place to start. With your classical training, the reaction would be very interesting. Someone else mentioned Supper's Ready, but that one is an album side for one song and a huge investment of your time.
You need to check out "Home By the Sea" especially at this time of year. It's a ghost story 🎃
Yes, but it needs to also include the second part, 'Second Home by the Sea.' Preferably a live version would be best, such as the one from 1992.
@@RubesGoodBrainCoffee absolutely but I didn't want to overwhelm him. Let curious take it's course.
@@RubesGoodBrainCoffee I agree that live is the best way to hear this song.
I would love if you would react to not just Peter Gabriel era-Genesis, but also some of his solo music, which is absolutely amazing. Songs like Biko, Sky Blue, San Jacinto, Playing For Time, Signal To Noise, Mercy Street (live 1987 Athens), Red Rain, Don't Give Up (duet with Kate Bush or with Paula Cole), Live And Let Live, etc. are definitely worth it.
You wanna hear Phil belt it out? Check out "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway / The Musical Box" from the Second Out album in 1977.
Given that Collins was born in 1951, and this album is 1978, he was 27. :-)
This song was primarily written by Mike Rutherford, the guitarist and bassist. Collins wouldn't do much songwriting until a few years after this.
O my dear girl - Genesis is the best band in the world ever exists ... so take this as a start, this is not a joke from me 😁
This song is usually labeled as "Soft Rock" or "Progressive Pop".
First of all, I’m happy you enjoy this song. It’s one of those Genesis songs which have a special meaning for their career: It was a hit, and it was a song that made a lot more females aware of this band.
As I expected some people claim this isn’t Genesis. OF COURSE IT IS! Why can’t you accept that this band liked to change their sound and the way they approached new songs? They never would have continued writing prog rock for years and years. Anyway, each later album also contained prog elements, those who don’t recognise that are deaf or ignorant. Genesis never would have existed such a long time without their constant changes.
BTW, I just registered on Twitch, but then I noticed I have to subscribe and pay - I’m sorry but I can’t afford that, I’m very poor.
Thank you Maggie
I have been rediscovering Genesis
In the 70s my friend and band mate would do Genesis and Kiss shows for us.
And in the 90s I was burnt out on Phil Collins.
Trick of the Tail is the first album without Gabriel. Great album being on pre order now on 2 45rpm LPS.
Another lp remastered was "Seconds out"live with Phil Collins
Gabriel wore his hair on a reverse Mohawk 😊😊😊😊😊
i love this song for since forever!
If you want to baby step toward their seriously progressive work, I suggest Entangled, Ripples, Duchess or Burning Rope next.
Supper's Ready is a must. Either early 70s with Peter or 82 with Phil
A better Halloween tune would be 'Home By The Sea/Second Home by the Sea' (haunted house) or 'Watcher of the Skies' (sci-fi story of an Earth without life).
A lot of people think that Phil wrote the lyrics, because it's a love song, but no. It was Mike who wrote them in about 15 minutes, much to his own surprise. 😊 Both he and Tony were starting to write more lyrics from a personal point of view. Their education they had was very stiff and repressed, in contrast to Phil's drama school upbringing, where education was minimal.
Tony claims to be the first person to use the phrase 'I love you' on a Genesis lyric. 😁 ('Oh how I love you, I once cried long ago', from Mad Man Moon on 1976's A Trick Of The Tail)
But he did write a good break-up song called Many Too Many.
Phil himself began writing complete songs, as his first marriage broke down, incl. Misunderstanding, Please Don't Ask (both of which ended up on Genesis's 1980 album Duke) and his debut solo hit In The Air Tonight.
This is one of my favorites from them mainly for the music not the lyrics. But some other songs yo play ste the following Take me Home, invisable touch and abother favorite is Throwing it all away. These are my likes.
Chilly Willy..😂🤣😂🤣
Hi Maggie. I'm glad you liked this nice song.
I think the Peter Gabriel period is more interesting, and I think that as an opera lover you will really like the "theatrical aspect" of that period. I suggest (just as a snack) "I know what I like (in your wardrobe)", and to get to something big "Supper's Ready" (Live 1973 are great to watch).
Regards!!
She needs to do Supper's Ready live - even though the audio is not from the recording but synched. She needs to see what theatrics that Peter Gabriel did.
@@darkelfling65 Exactly!!!
This song represents the beginning and following of female fans. At this point Genesis started to move away from progressive rock. but never completely because individual songs would rotate from progressive to this love ballad. When Phil took over lead vocals vocals he would be there to the end of Genesis except there very last studio release. Of course that was the end of Genesis as far as studio albums went.
This was a high school gf's favorite song back then.
I design a penguin for me and my wife we have a tattoo on her arm penguins mate for life
Wonderful ballad. Please, react to Prince - Solo.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE listen and react to “Whiskey Colored Crayon “ by Lainey Wilson. Thanks!
Super odd intro song for someone to discover Genesis. Still a nice song, but it is an island of a song amongst the actual prog songs that Genesis created and recorded back in the 70's. But you liked it so that's all that matters. As for attracting viewers it's not exactly ideal. Very, very few Genesis fans, new or old, click on a "Follow You Follow Me" reaction, so don't be discouraged by the slow response. When you listen to some more Genesis, you'll quickly understand why that is the case. Again, nice "cute" song, but this is a hot dog vs the 4 course meal that some of the earlier prog Genesis songs were all about (I like hot dogs, by the way). The first decision is whether to stay with lead Phil Genesis or venture back to Peter Gabriel-led Genesis. Your call. So Genesis? Well, for starters, I can't think of any band that slowly evolved more, from album to album, than Genesis. No album was exactly the same, they always altered their approach just enough to create something new with each release so there is always something new to discover and analyze. 14 Genesis studio albums and each of them has value, but are actually substantially different enough to be a new discovery each time. How about try We Can't Dance (1991) and The Return of the Giant Hogweed (1971) on the same presentation. One tells you they are uncoordinated, while the other warns of the spread of the toxic plant, Heracleum Mantegazzianum (also known as giant hogweed) after it was "captured" in Russia and brought to England by a Victorian explorer. See if they are similar. Maybe title it "We Can't Dance vs Return of the Giant Hogweed by Genesis, are they the same song?" It'll be a well-visited video! Or any Genesis for that matter, we love it!!

Go Penguins
It's everything but psychodelic. 🙂
Red hat and had hair
Genesis 2.0 "for dummies". Not for me thanks 😉
I am sorry... but... this song (is ok but) has nothing to do with real Genesis...
