- Making paper using nothing but grass, household chemicals, and hand tools! This was the first week activity for our agriculture and chemistry classes. The students and I had a ton of fun making it!

This is also the first phase of restoring the school hoop-house to a functional growing space. It has been years since it has been used or maintained and one of my goals in the first year of my agricultural science program is to return it to production status through an educational journey with my students! This is not all we'll be doing though. Across the school's 350 acre organic farm there are many great resources that require restoration and maintenance. These are the long term goals for the program, but they will take years to accomplish, some longer than others. Throughout this year you will see us set and accomplish short term tasks working towards these long term goals, always planning for where it will put us in the future. Come along on our great learning adventure!

Awesome video teach! Your students will remember this always. Hands on is such a great teaching method. Maybe make two or three different waretcolor paints from pigments found in your local area. Then the final que de gras would be a painting contest from all materials. Put on display in the hallway and voted on by the school. Just a thought. Keep rocking it though.

It would be a great idea to find a team of volunteers to build small, simple production line of paper made out of grass just for fun :D
Real cool tutorial and lovely vibes teaching people from ages simple natural chemistry. Quite an uplifting video and somewhat showing how down to earth collective effort can contribute to creating fun materials and be beneficial to communities in terms of social activities. It would be interesting too push the idea even further and learning how to create natural colored pigments made of bioavailable materials to either color the paper sheets or make oil colors or tempura like paint. And try lithography or other materials for printing with these colors. Might be a fun project. :-)
very creative and good results, why not mash the grass or use a blender to make the paper pulp smoother, it would be nice if we could discuss, exchange insights and experiences so that handmade paper becomes better and more useful, I can make handmade paper that is smooth and even
Foxtail millet can be used for two things that i know of now one paper and two flour the grain on the head can be turned into flour.
I have never tried to make flour with the grain of the Foxtail. It seems like it would be difficult to separate the chaff. I may have to give it a shot in the future. Thank you!

How long does it need to be cooked?
That's a very dangerous sickle technique. And it's also inefficient.
For those who are here fpr for primitive paper-making from grass, you can use water-roux as glue. Apparently, it makes the paper more flexible at lower temperatures, to bend instead of breaking. To make the water roux, mix a bit of flour with a bit of water, and add more water until you twice as much water as flour, whic is enough for 5 times more water than flour in the solution for paper-making, then boil it while stirring/mixing, then add that to warm water for paper-making. If the water is cold, the glue will form lumps, instead of spreading into the solution. After that, you can add the pulp to the solution.

How much washing soda is to be used
I was pretty imprecise here, just eyeballing it, but the exact ratio you should go for is 1 lb (500g) of dry fiber for 8 quarts (8 L) of water with 3.5 oz (100 g) of washing soda. If you add more washing soda it will speed up the process but will result in weaker paper as it begins to degrade the cellulose fibers. Best of luck! Let me know if you have any other questions!

What kind of grass is this?
Mostly Foxtail Grass but it's a mix.

You have to use a type of leaf that is high in cellulose. A good rule of thumb is to use a type of leaf that feels fibrous. Corn husks, lily leaves, and yard trimmings will work too. You can take flowers and press them into the paper as you are making it, but you can't make the paper out of the flowers. Hope this is helpful!

You can! Just remember, the finer you make your pulp the easier it will be to write on. Paper made with rough pulp can still make an interesting surface to paint on though.
This would be good if it can be used as replacement for plastic bags. More research for a stronger and waterproof paper made of grass. Lol
