Hi everyone! You can call me Bird. I'm a bit of an odd science teacher. Welcome to this channel where we learn science by doing science, class is usually outside, and subject matter tends to be cross curricular with focuses in agricultural science, chemistry, and physics. Autum Morning with the Goats
Just a wholesome autumn morning with the goats I thought I'd share. The students call them grass-puppies because they like to cuddle and be pet. It was warm and sunny, and the leaves are turning beautiful colors.

Making Paper from Invasive Plants: Controlling Johnson Grass
Переглядів 1 тис.3 роки тому
On the farm, sometimes you'll find plants that are poisonous, sometimes you'll find plants that are invasive species, and sometimes you'll find plants that are both. This doesn't mean we can't make use of them. In this video, we are working to control Jonson Grass, an invasive species that produces a toxic substance (hydrogen cyanide) when it wilts. We will be using the unwanted grass to make h...

Growing Mushrooms in Class and at Home
Переглядів 3014 роки тому
It's simpler than you might think to grow your own mushrooms! In this video, we inoculate our own mushroom blocks starting from grain spawn and chopped straw. You'll get to see start to finish production of Blue Oyster Mushrooms and just how efficient a crop mushrooms can be.
Growing Mushrooms: Building Our First Facility
Переглядів 3564 роки тому
This is the beginning of our mushroom growing operation. In this video, we construct a mushroom growing facility and test how well it works using ready to fruit blocks. We tested with two different species, shiitakes, and lions mane mushrooms. The whole facility was built using nothing but extra plastic from the hoop-house, some wire, and alligator clips (using the greenhouse as support for the...
A Walk in the Woods: Spring Peeper Swamp in Early Spring
Переглядів 1064 роки тому
In a time when a lot of us might be stuck inside, I thought it might be nice to take you for a walk in the woods. We'll go down to the swamp and listen to the spring peepers singing, walk the trails of whitetail deer and coyotes, investigate the beaver's den, and find the first wild bloom of spring. So sit back, relax, and listen.
Using Fish to Raise Plants: Small Scale Aquaponics Experiment
Переглядів 5894 роки тому
Our most complex experiment thus far! Aquaponics uses the nitrogen cycle to our advantage, using the waste of the fish as nutrients for the plants and the plants as water purifiers for the fish. This is of course simplified, and the class tackled the problem in its full complexity, learning the chemistry and biology behind what makes aquaponics setups function. The students then broke down into...
How to Prep a Greenhouse for Over Break + Big Updates
Переглядів 1714 роки тому
It's been a while! This is a big update on all the things we've been doing! We prepared the greenhouse for fall and winter break, viewed the 2019 Mercury transit, worked in the apple orchard, harvested the hoop house, planted papayas, and started testing our prototype aquaponics setups!
Reducing Garden Maintenance Organically: Weeding and Mulching
Переглядів 1474 роки тому
Some old rotted out hay can make your garden maintenance so much easier. We prepare the hoop-house for easy ongoing maintenance by weeding thoroughly and burying everything in the old hay. The already established plants will come up through it but new weed seed won’t sprout.
Establishing Strawberries in the Greenhouse
Переглядів 1804 роки тому
Students learn to transplant and care for strawberry plants as we establish a patch in the greenhouse. They also got their first introduction to soil amendments as we work to combat the drying conditions of the table beds. We even got some unexpected little visitors as we worked!
Erecting the Hoop house

Rough Ground to Garden: Doing it by Hand
Переглядів 3334 роки тому
This was...a lot...of work. Between last week and this week it took us six days of heavy hand tooling to turn the rough ground of the hoop-house into usable garden space. The kids learned how to use a spade, how to use a spading fork, and how to use a hoe. We finished right up against the end of when you can plant a fall crop, but the hoop-house will help us resist the first few frosts. Hopeful...

I feel like some folks go to Las Vegas and some people dunk red hot ceramics in sourdough starter. Same brain chemistry, different levels of creative engagement with life
Those are gorgeous. I'm excited to see that you can reach sufficient temperature with a pit fire.
Do you happen to know what temperature your pottery is when pulling it out of the fire? Thanks 😊
👍
very creative and good results, why not mash the grass or use a blender to make the paper pulp smoother, it would be nice if we could discuss, exchange insights and experiences so that handmade paper becomes better and more useful, I can make handmade paper that is smooth and even
Great video, I'm having a heck of a time finding information on hemp nettle😢 if you have any insight it would be appreciated. I'm in BC Canada, Blessings
Update?
Thankyou
I love your content, and I'm falling in love with you 🤒🤒
What school is this? It looks awesome!
That's just very cool and lovely to watch everyone having a great time. I love the commitment and hard work. I love watching community work and educating these motivated kids teaching them essential skills. This is inspiring fir teachers, activists, social workers and everyone who might need inspiration for all kinds of events, to create meaningful events. I see that the last video was posted 1 year ago and hope and looking forward to seeing new videos. I find them really soothing.
Real cool tutorial and lovely vibes teaching people from ages simple natural chemistry. Quite an uplifting video and somewhat showing how down to earth collective effort can contribute to creating fun materials and be beneficial to communities in terms of social activities. It would be interesting too push the idea even further and learning how to create natural colored pigments made of bioavailable materials to either color the paper sheets or make oil colors or tempura like paint. And try lithography or other materials for printing with these colors. Might be a fun project. :-)
Love it!
Thank you! It helped!
Can you please say more about the propotion, how much of each. I like it very much. Thank you for your answer and best regards from Switzerland.
Great vídeo, i wish wee got more vídeos like this
Finally, we can become independent on imports of greeting cards. I shall give it a try this year. Great teamwork!
I love your lemon tree. 🍋 I tried growing one from seed too, and after a few failed attempts, I got one to grow. It's going on 3 years old now. I wish I had taken daily or weekly or monthly pictures of it, like you have. Thanks so much for sharing. I love my little tree. It's very gratifying.
little did they know this would be the last video they posted....
This is super cool , I want to make paper out of tea leaves
Hi Can you please tell how to bleach the paper
I knew my textbook would be good for something.
What happened to this channel??? ._?
It would be a great idea to find a team of volunteers to build small, simple production line of paper made out of grass just for fun :D
Awesome video teach! Your students will remember this always. Hands on is such a great teaching method. Maybe make two or three different waretcolor paints from pigments found in your local area. Then the final que de gras would be a painting contest from all materials. Put on display in the hallway and voted on by the school. Just a thought. Keep rocking it though.

Beautiful. Video absolutely. Loved it 👑 Thank. You. 😉
Are you still using glaze? Or only the white brew?
This would be good if it can be used as replacement for plastic bags. More research for a stronger and waterproof paper made of grass. Lol
