I am sure I am not alone here, but this is stunning. Aside from a lot of head scratching per the lines, this is an incredible kit! If I ever get one I truly hope I can do it justice and hope to see a completed one soon. Well done, Nigel. The instructions do look first rate. Thanks, Dane

I was always fascinated by this aircraft as it was one of the first you saw when you entered the RAF museum in Hendon, before they spread the planes to Duxford and other museums. The cockpit seemed so small, for both positions, but there was an elegance about it.

I got to take a very short hop in the rear seat of one of these. The highlight of my aviation life.

I built the 1:48th twin engine float plane and OMG it was amazing. It’s been a couple of years so my sanity has sort of returned after doing the rigging.

I completely understand about the rigging :) :) Great kits, both 1/48 and 1/32. I have this in my stack, but the rigging gives me nightmares :)

Great review Nigel! Possibly the color call-outs being numbered seems inconsequential, but I bet it's helpful to folks that are color-blind. Those instructions are incredible and looks like there is loads of details in that kit.

Hi Nigel, these types were also used by the RN in 1915 off German East Africa in the attack on the cruiser SMS Konigsberg, along with Heri Farnham types. These aircraft were fitted with radio so it could receive air to ground information so they could assist with spotting for Monitors HMS Mersey and Severn firing at the Konigsberg in the Rufiji Delta where the ships were unable to spot for themselves.
I could not give you ideas of a colour or marking scheme for those aircraft, the documents I have dont refer ro such details!

Very nice kit Nigel. B.T.W a carbine is a rifle.

A Berthier carbine is a cut down version of the bolt action rifle. It was designed for cavalrymen who found the shorter weapon better suited to mounted warfare. Observers started carrying them aloft in the early days as it was an improvement n a pistol. Because it was a cutdown model the magazine held a paltry 3 rounds.

If you dont like to do rigging it is a kit to leave as it takes forever to rigs it .
The rigging holes are not drilled so all need to be done.
If anyone is intereested in doing the kit check out Flying Circus Models he has built one some time back.
I have been working on mine for about 2 months and still not finished but one hell of a kit.
    Dennis

Thanks for your comments Dennis. The build you are referring to was mentioned in the video and linked in the description below the video. It truly is a great kit by the looks of things.

A good review Nigel, looks like a fun and challenging model to build. Perhaps it is a challenge that needs to be taken up? 🙂

It is a lovely kit indeed! There is one preserved at Hendon. If you’d like photos of it (I know restored aircraft…) I’m happy to share 😊

Looking at the CSM Nieuport XXIII - reasonably priced down here. JUst bought the Meng 1/32 Triplane, complete with 1/10 bust of MvR.

Hi Nigel, Thanks for a great review. This looks like a really fragile model. It's going to take a steady hand to put this together. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day. Jeff

A great review, thank you. I’ve seen CSM around but not looked closely. I quite fancy the
Nieuport or Bristol scout. I wonder if they do a SE 5A?
