- Two years ago, I was so depressed I could barely get out of bed in the morning. I wrote this poem about that experience and produced several versions. POEM:
The voices in my head are unkind, giving power to thoughts I couldn’t dare own as mine.
The longer the voices perceive my failures the more forcefully I validate their existence.
And then I wonder - how many others hear voices like mine?
...but nevermind.
It’s time to wake up, brush my teeth, go to work.
Time to come home and count followers as worth.
Time to call friends and check in, all’s the same
Time to hope that tomorrow will change.
Forgetting that it’s always time for something and yet there’s never enough, so we gamify life for more likes and more stuff -
Unable to reconcile each passing year, time’s the one thing we can’t engineer.
How might the tens of thousands of collective decisions made daily change if we were forced to come to terms with our own mortality?
Would the voices in our head stop the tirade? Or would we feel them grow frantic, and become more afraid?
Perhaps it’s only when we stare in the face of a loved one who is dying that we realize we really only get one shot.
That quarrels with lovers and battles at the workplace all seem to fade away as inconsistent and insignificant when seen in the frame of our limited existence.
And that thinking “small”, and doing “small” and loving “small” -- only make sense under the false narrative that we will somehow live forever.
But never mind. It’s time.
Time to place a few bets, along this invisible thread
and give pause to the voices inside my head.

Taryn Southern Wow, just experienced it with Cardboard and headphones standing in my room, slowly turning, watching, yet standing in your room. After a while transitioning to this other place, looking at all the details you put in there (the mirror image that is not brushing the hair for instance). Experiencing the directionally changing music. Immersing oneself in your setting how you've imagined expresses your feelings of depression back then best, makes it so much more heartfelt and real and ... becomes a tiny bit of my own. Thank you.

This my friends, is precisely the dilemma of the human condition. We just have to understand that everyday is a gift, even if it feels monotonous sometimes, because one day we won't have all of the people in our lives that we used to.

I love the 360 version. It is a beautiful piece of art. Wish I'd ran across it when you'd orginally created it. Would have recommended it for a film Festival showing. As well had you submit it to show at KremFest VR here in Seattle when we where running in 2018/2019. I (we) know that feeling. That some of our best works come from our experiences during our darkest times and sharing. Keep the faith.

Love it, absolutely love it, every part of it. The small worries around that may seem so big, how still it is in the bed, the black void of a sealing that really adds to it. Great piece, really good, deserves more appreciation.

I don't know what's going on in the world. We, the humanity, are living an epidemic of depression and anxiety. I firmly believe that it is because we have built a society based on consumption and technology. A place where people do not touch each other, they do not talk, they do not really love each other. I live in Brazil, in Copacabana. Blue sky, beach, and I am extremely anxious. And the Brazil, such a beautiful country with so much sun and music, and wonderful things, have the highest rate of anxiety disorder in the world, according to the World Health Organization. I hope you will stay well forever, and never go through what happened again.
