The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Pee Wee Spitilera was an absolute beast on the clarinet who unfortunately died before he was fifty. Richard "Cougar" Nelson was equally bestial on the trombone. They don't make 'em like that any more!

The late great Pee Wee Spitelera. Rick (Cougar) Nelson was the ONLY trombone player capable of matching Hirt for technique.

AMEN, Al Hirt! Here's to the man with the greatest NFL connection. He was one of the music acts for the Halftime Show of what became the 1st Super Bowl! Go check out his smashing rendition of the theme to THE GREEN HORNET! Always love listening to his Top 40 hit SUGAR LIPS. Especially how he makes his horn mimic a laugh at the end.....😎🇵🇷🇺🇸🗽🦂

These clips are terrific. So many times when I was a kid I wanted to see just one clip of Al Hirt on national TV. Anytime there was a retrospective show with old clips of Ed Sullivan or other 60s shows I would watch just to see if I would see a clip of Al Hirt or Herb Alpert perform. Never happened. Always the Beatles or the Stones or someone the gatekeepers (producers) of the time liked. its so good to finally see these clips of Al at his peak of popularity and performance. This was fun!

Quite a fast pace version of when the Saints go marching in! Interesting version. Like the ending: "that's all folks!"

Even though I'm an 80's baby when I'd go visit my grandparents house as a kid I was fascinated with watching Ed Sullivan and my Grandma and my parents used to watch Ed Sullivan when I was a kid. So I guess you can say I am a 3rd generation Ed Sullivan watcher. I love the fact that The Temptations my favorite group and many Motown acts went onto the Ed Sullivan show as well as many other African Americans. A man way ahead of his time.

Al really stepped out in this rendition. The Cl man was PeeWee Reese, I suppose. He played with Hirt when I saw them in SF in the '60's.
