My dad played drums in New Orleans for over 60 years. Al Hirt was my cousin ( his middle name is Maxwell). Dad played with him many times, but when he started getting famous and traveling the world , Dad gave up his spot so he could be home with the family. For the first Super Bowl in New Orleans at Tulane stadium, my dad played on the sideline with Al and Doc Sevrenson ( Tonight Show bandleader). At halftime, Dad called up and said he had a ticket for me if I could get to the stadium. I sure got there! Dad dropped the ticket down to me from about the second ramp level and it just kept floating! Finally caught it. Got to sit on sidelines. That night, Dad had a small jazz group to play at a private party of them Saints owner John Mecom, on Lee Circle. As we caught the elevator to the third floor party room , Len Dawson, winning QB for the Chiefs hopped on the elevator too. For the first time in my 12 years of life I was speechless! Pee Wee loved to fish and went on plenty trips with us. Growing up , Dad ran the top Society band in the city , where they played every a-list society and debutant party as well as all of the old line carnival balls like Rex and Comus. I would come home from school and there would be a 14 piece orchestra rehearsing in our living room, then all the guys would go into our yard for a big crawfish boil. New Orleans was an almost magical place to grow up in. Thanks for all the great memories Dad. I miss you.

I was a senior in high school in 1971 and saw Al Hirt with the same band. At that time my friends were listening to 'Creedence Clearwater', 'The Doors', 'The Who', etc. as I was but I couldn't explain in words the talent of what I saw on stage with Hirt and his band. His 'South Rampart Street' is amazing and beautiful. Peace amigos.........JO

I joined Al Hirts band right before turning 21 years old and was with him until 1962. Did my own thing with my own band for 5 yrs, went back with him in 1970 until I 983 for à total of about 19 yrs. He çould do anything with horn, his jazz was different than any other player, it was his own style of jazz. Ronnie DuPont, piano player also was with Pete Fountain 12 yrs

Hey, I need your help. I found a 50s trumpet, king brand, and it has a note in its case that says "Al Hirts First Trumpet". all of my researching points to it being a his. But my main issue is that it has a dent on the tubbing leaving the mouthpiece, was that from something Hirt did, or was it just from someone else?
Al Hirt was the complete trumpeter but Harry James was in a class all his own.The bass player was Jim Black my ex son in law.My daughter Debbie Fagnano played piano with the band for a while.She now plays the caliope on river boat Natchez.Jim is retired.I was a fan of Hirt from the first time I saw him on the Dinah Shore show,never dreamed I would ever meet him.What an honor!

I didn't even realize who he was, until afterwards, but I certainly recognized a great trumpet and sound from one of the best trumpet players ever! Both Hirt and James are STILL favorites! Both are gone now, but it's their recordings that I enjoy. Two very different styles of playing, but oh, such impressive talents they were!
This is an awesome and unexpected treat. I grew up listening to the great man and trying to educate my less educated fellow students how great a trumpet player he was. Unfortunately, that was around the time this video was made but I had no access to it and my band director was always pushing Maynard Ferguson and Chuck Mangione on us. Now, make no mistake, Maynard and Chuck are also near and dear to my heart but I have a special regard for Al and his tone and his devastating flexibility and speed on the trumpet. I missed my one chance to see him at Wolf Trap nearly a decade and a half after this and thought that I had totally missed out. Now thanks to you I have seen him in concert and it was brilliant. Thank you so much for posting this!

Wow! Ok lemme gather my thoughts......A Freaking hour long video of Al Hirt.....wooowww....this uploader is deserving of the Al Hirt youtube video Award! Never have I been so grateful to finally see the entire video of the masters performance. I felt as though I had travel back through time and was seated in the best seat of the house. this was Amazing. I'm very appreciative of the time it would have taken to preserve this clip,digitize it then upload it. wow thank God for UA-cam and the uploader of course. You have certainly ,single handedly increase the value of UA-cam and made it a better place thank you thank you thank you. Tell me where else in the world could I have been able to take in a concert with the undisputed KING of the trumpet,peewee and mr perjean as well as the bass man, drummer and pianist. AS a trumpet player, I don't think anybody could touch him. This includes Harry James and Doc Severinson.
