I wipe down my EUC with Tub O Towels. They are abundantly soaked in cleaning solution, a good size (I use the 10" x 12" ones), and strong. They leave a light sheen on the shell that makes it look new.
This is super useful for those who mistakenly treat their wheels like cars...just soap it up and hose them down. Someday maybe waterproofing will be a standard, but until then, careful sponge bathing is the way to go.
I've always been wary about hosing down my V11 because it *seemed* wrong, so I opted to just be OK with it being a certain level of grimy, which still builds up. this looks WAY better and more thorough- thanks for being the Peak Dad of the EUC community yet again Marty!
Hi... Thanks for your video sharing. I would like to know what is that sound/noise anyway.. on video min 13:50 (when you glide the wheel forward backward). Have an idea? Is it normal?
I have Park mtb cleaning brushes I use on my mtb, I like them on my wheel. I use the brush instead of sponge to knock off the caked on mud rinsing often so the mud does not act as an abrasive against the wheel. Then once most the mud is knocked off I use a sponge.
Correct, I misted down my S18 and popped the main board. So controlling where the water goes is top tip. Only problem we have here in the UK is that the mud does not dry out quick enough and you need to get it out some how. Thanks for sharing.
I start at the top (by hand) and work my way down. I never use a hose but I do use a compressor to blow dirt out of small crevices. I finish with Armour All wipes, no sprays unless sprayed onto a rag first and I never put it on the treads of the tire.
Just one suggestion when cleaning the tire with a hose. Use a wheel stand so the wheel is still in the upright position. when they're made to be water resistant they're made to only be water resistant mainly and the upright position of while you riding so on its side some designs of the wheels can be more prone to water damage if you lay them over. Example the S18.
Thanks Marty, Armor All has always specifically stated not to use their foam and other products on motorcycles and bikes tires. It’s well know in our sport bike community. Be extra careful when leaning over on a curve.
I think you will find that the people who will watch this video maintain their wheels are also into modifications, great video, always something to learn in the mirco0mobility world, personally I think cleaning is one of the ways to find faults, not only with wheels but in general.
Any concerns about the spray cleaner residue on the tire? I mean it's one thing using it on a 2 ton car's tires, but for an EUC or even just a bike, I'd wonder about that leaning into a turn.
I use a little baby shampoo when I sponge bath my wheel. Something I learned from a guy that washes expensive cars foe a living. He said the lanoline in the soap is good for all the plastic and rubber parts and makes everything shiny.
My wheel is making a sound while i walk it very slowly. At normal walking pace or faster, nothing is audible. Is there a way to grease the wheel or do some other sort of upkeep? I have inmotion v8, almost two years old now. I used it for 3300 km.
Wheels can make all kinds of noises - creaking sounds from the shell, motor sounds, etc. I'd have to hear the sound. In extreme cases the motor axle bearings can be removed and replaced but only a few people on the planet have done that to EUC's. Basically, the motors are maintenance free components. 3300 km is not much. Most wheels can last "at least" 15000km, and usually much more.
The tyre foam is a good idea as it protects the rubber (and plastic) from cracking due to UV and ozone in sunny California. I use something similar on my bicycle tyres and it works well.
For those of us with hollow motors, I'd probably skip Marty's spraying of the wheel tyre horizontally with the hose to clean them for the time being till they properly sort it. My V11 bearings (Batch 3) have been good so far (knock on wood). I've gotten caught in the rain a few times and ridden on roads that have been heavily rained on and so far so good. I've inspected the wheel after and apart from the tyre and wheel casing (and me), the motor hub has remain pretty much dry which I can only attribute the wheel being constantly in a vertical position during the ride and after on it's stand. Personally, to clean my wheel, I've just been using my electric dust blower that I use for my PC to blow away debris off my wheel and in the hard to reach places within the wheel housing, giving it a good brush with a cleaning brush and then wiping it down with a damp towel. Though after watching this vid Marty, I'm tempted to give my tyre a good spray with that tyre foam! :) Thanks for the Vid mate. Informative as usual.
I would assume that a ride on some muddy trails would get mud up inside the wheel well. Is there anything short of dismantling the unit to get the insides clean? Obviously, you can't just squirt a stream of water inside to flush out the mud.
I don't have experience riding in that much mud. IMO, I don't really care whether the "wheel well" is dirty as long as the tire isn't rubbing against it. Otherwise I guess you would have no alternative but to spray water up into there.
I'm always curious on how someone has to clean their EUC. I'm more of a OCD when it comes to cleaning stuff that I use everyday and this is in the same vein of watching someone ride an EUC, although not exciting, BUT, it is very informative for someone anyone who owns an EUC and wants to take care their very expensive purchase. Thanks!
2:00 for a majority of wheels I would strongly recommend against spraying water towards the wheel when it's laying on its side. Including as shown here, by spraying on the tire then rotating it. For instance, on the 16x there's an opening ok the bottom / middle, inside on both sides. If the wheel is on its side water will drip onto the motor hub then flow freely towards the LED strips, speakers, battery packs, motor and battery connectors, beeper... you get the idea. If you switch sides later you could even get the water that went between the outer and inner shell onto the motherboard despite it's at the top. It would be okay to get the tire wet if the wheel is vertical tho, like when you're riding but never on its side for the 16X. Water being able to drip inside unless they're vertical is a common thing for EUCs usually due to holes for ventilation and near the axle.
@@ElectricUnicycles yes it's very difficult to identity then demonstrate a method that would be both safe and effective for every wheel 👍 Everything else you show has very little risk, and the results speak for themselves 🎆 Just like you've started to show at the beginning, it could be interesting to have a video showing everything to *not* do when washing a wheel 😁 (it can be hard to guess until you have problems)
The Sherman just seems to be a natural fit for using a couple of saw horses, a 2x4 beam across them, and a little cordage or a couple of bar clamps to hang the Sherman. That seems to be ideal for cleaning the tire and you don't have to worry about the Sherman falling over. Two 2x4s would make the bar clamps easier to use.
Should be a good tool. It can get the caked on dirt a bit wet without excessive water everywhere. The heat and pressure also working to mechanically work some of the dirt off as well. I would use a brush first to knock off the big chunks of dirt. Then a sponge bath. And then for detail clean, a bristle brush and steam wand. The idea is to not introduce so much water.

@@ElectricUnicycles Don't know. If you've been using it for years without any problems, that particular product brand would probably be ok then. True. It's good to really get to know your wheel, including the inside.
Have you removed the silicone from the circuit boards? Is it possible to make a video on that?
Like the tyre foam tip! 😎👍
Does the tyre foam contain silicone? (In that case - bye bye to self adhesive or paint in the future)

Yes. I like to use it but like I said in the video, it's an optional step.
