World's Spookiest Mausoleum? Calvin C Phillips - Tallahassee, Florida

  • Let’s take a look at one of the most bizarre mausoleums in the world. This is the mausoleum of Calvin C. Phillips located in Oakland Cemetery, in the city of Tallahassee, Florida. Now, why do I call it bizarre? Because a man walked into this mausoleum, lied down inside the casket and then died. This is not just a rumor, it is recorded clearly that on 19th of November, 1919, Calvin C. Phillips told a man who was passing by to call his undertaker and then went into the mausoleum. The undertaker came within an hour, and found Phillips dead inside the casket. He was alarmed, so he called the authorities and it was determined beyond any doubt that this was a natural death.
No funeral services were held, nobody came to see his body. All the undertaker had to do was lock the door and his job was done. Till today, it has remained a mystery that a human being could calculate the time of his death so accurately. But what did Calvin Phillips do? He was a fanatic clock maker and was obsessed with the concept of time, So obsessed that he built his house in Tallahassee with a huge clock tower. But what else is known about this man? Pretty much nothing. All we can gather is that his name is Calvin C. Phillips and he died on November 19, 1919.
This man’s life is a real puzzle because people have searched through census records and birth certificates from all the 50 states and have found no record of him. Because of this, there are even rumors that he is a Vampire who lived for centuries, got tired of living and locked himself in the mausoleum.
But we are just scratching the surface of this mystery. On 26th of April 2000, a visitor noticed that the original marble door had been cracked open. The cops were called and they were shocked to find out that the casket was open and the Skull had been stolen. On one of the walls, a hexagram was drawn with blood, possibly human blood along with the number 322 and on the floor there was a burnt book. Obviously these are signs of occult rituals which took place the night before, but the most intriguing detail is the missing skull. I mean, they could have taken the entire skeleton, but why did they take the skull and leave the rest? Obviously we can’t help but think of folklore that says one of the few ways to kill a vampire is to tear its head off. Why did they let the body rest there for 81 years and then decide to take the skull? The skull has not been found even as of 2015.
Ghost stories are so many that the Police have to guard the mausoleum on Halloween nights. One person saw an old man with a long beard perched up on top of the dome. As he was looking, the old man flew from there to this gigantic oak tree. A week later, a 15 year old girl was found unconscious not on the ground, but on one of the branches. And then there is the story of a man with a cane who keeps asking visitors “What time is it”?
Now, this metallic door was put up by authorities who sealed the entrance after the missing skull incident, but before that it had a beautiful marble door. Above the door, you can see his last name Phillips but no first name, no date of birth or death, no other information. This is so weird because this man built his own fabulous mausoleum, possibly the very first mausoleum in Florida, but gives no other information. Most people would die to have their information etched all over the walls. And think about it, this mausoleum is just too big for one casket. A person can live inside it. So, what else was in it? Some people believe that Phillips himself came out of the casket at night and walked around and they say they often hear footsteps inside the mausoleum.
Remember I said he had a house with a giant clock tower. It was there until 1980s and we even have some pictures of it. But one morning, people of Tallahassee realized that it was just gone, as if the entire tower and the house had evaporated. Till today, nobody has been able to locate it.
Now, whether you believe in ghosts or not, you've got to admit that this is a pretty strange story. So is this the most bizarre mausoleum in the world? What do you think?

Definitely the theft is a skull & bones ritual. They have had a penchant for stealing skulls, including Geronimos skull. They also use the 322 number as an identifier. If you want you're culprits for the theft of the skull, they left their signature at the scene.

I’m from Tally and so is all my family in my moms side, we’ve been here since the beginning😂 I know some old people, including my grandparents that know a lot about the clock tower house and everything, Even though much still isn’t known about Philips himself. This one older lady I kinda know used to play at that house when she was little. His house was located right by the old train station, which was perfect for someone obsessed with time. Multiple times I’ve parked right in front of where the house was and never realized it until recently. All that’s left is this hill and you can see where stairs or a driveway once were, right across the street from this restaurant called “Nefertari’s”. It’s also believed that at the time Philips died, all the clocks in his house stopped at that exact time. Philips came from up north somewhere, where he was an architect, abandoned his family, came to tally, became obsessed with time and literally barely came out of his house, he would only come out to watch the trains (I think).

It's not true that he is unknown person! Everything is clear about him! Census records indicate that Calvin C. Phillips was born around 1834 in Massachusetts. He trained as an architect and lived in New York for some portion of his adult life. His architectural work was honored by medals from the Pennsylvania State Agriculture Society and the “Exposition Universelle” of 1889, which were brought to Florida by his daughter after his death. He built a home at 815 South Macomb Street, and erected a large clock tower at one end of the building. Calvin Phillips’ property eventually passed into the possession of Mr. and Mrs. Henry M. Blaine, who in turn gave the house and clock tower to the Florida Heritage Foundation. Efforts to restore the unusual landmark proved prohibitively expensive, and it was torn down in the 1980s.

They did the same thing to Geronimo. The Sioux Indian tribe sued to get his skull back from the "Skull and Bones" secret society. Two prominent mambers are John Kerry and George W. Bush.
"Among prominent alumni are former President and Chief Justice William Howard Taft (a founder's son); former Presidents and father and son George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush; Supreme Court Justices Morrison R. Waite and Potter Stewart; James Jesus Angleton, "mother of the Central Intelligence Agency"; Henry Stimson, U.S. Secretary of War (1940-1945); U.S. Secretary of Defense (1951-1953) Robert A. Lovett, William B. Washburn, Governor of Massachusetts; and Henry Luce, founder and publisher of Time, Life, Fortune, and Sports Illustrated magazines.[citation needed]
John Kerry, former U.S. Secretary of State and former U.S. Senator; Stephen A. Schwarzman, founder of Blackstone Group; Austan Goolsbee, Chairman of Barack Obama's Council of Economic Advisers; Harold Stanley, co-founder of Morgan Stanley; and Frederick W. Smith, founder of FedEx, are all reported to be members.
In the 2004 U.S. Presidential election, both the Democratic and Republican nominees were alumni. George W. Bush wrote in his autobiography, "[In my] senior year I joined Skull and Bones, a secret society; so secret, I can't say anything more."[21] When asked what it meant that he and Bush were both Bonesmen, former Presidential candidate John Kerry said, "Not much, because it's a secret." If you like this story check the history of Old City Cemetery in Tallahassee between Call Street and Park Ave. It has a huge wrought iron fence and gate around it that is locked every night ritually not to keep people out but to keep what is buried there in. Several graves of people that were tried and executed as witches are buried there and presumed to wander the grounds at night. The public library which is only a block away has better detailed information about it.

i like a number of the things you've put up here, like the stuff from India.
This one I'm not so sure about.
I mean, would a house with a brick clock tower just disappear overnight? How do we know that this is actually real, anyway?
it's a puzzle, I suppose, that you've offered us. I do appreciate the time it took. I just wish just a little more research on your part had been done on this particular one.
BTW, the India stuff is so interesting to me bc I enjoy history.

+Merci de Beaucoup I agree, there is a LOT of speculation in this video. Although, I have to admit, as a Tallahassee native, I'm not sure why I've never heard this story before. With a really quick Google search, I found that the house was torn down in the 80s. It didn't "disappear".

what a messed up story. I live in Tallahassee back in the 1970's when Phillips story was told just pryer to his old house being demolished, yep do the research, it came down w/o any spooky activity. They also ran a story on his tomb. As you sais it was beautiful door and all. I am very angry someone broke into the tomb and stole his skull, how very evil of someone to do. This crap of him being a vampire and all is so disrespectful to the dead. He lived and he contributed to his community and died. I can not remember if he had a family there or not but out of respect people should not defile the tomb or belittle him or his memory. PERIOD!

4:28 I don't think this guy knows what the purpose of a Mausoleum is. It's a family crypt. That's why only the last name is on it. Nobody puts death dates on the outside of these structures… at least not back then. You place the casket(with memorial plaque attached to the casket lid) inside and seal the door. When the next family member dies you open it up, put their casket in and seal it back up. It's size is not uncommon and it certainly isn't the first one in Fl... where are you getting your source material?

The fact that he died of natural causes does not rule out suicide. 100 years ago there was no way to determine someone's cause of death with the same accuracy as today. The man was obsessed with time, so maybe he wanted his date of death to fall on that particular day, especially since the number 19 symbolizes completion, an end and a new beginning. From what little there is known about this man, it sounds an awful lot like a planned suicide, although I'm at a loss regarding the stories that occurred after his death.
