    were all to blame is my favorite song by them, the lyrics are still very true in 2022

    Not often you see reactors going past Sum 41's first three hits, glad to see it. But yeah, within the pop-punk explosion of the late 90s to early 2000s, Sum 41 was probably the most openly inspired by metal of them all, and as their careers went on, they leaned into heavier and heavier music as opposed to most of the other groups of that same era. Underclass Hero went back to more pop-punk (a direction which led their guitarist Dave to leave the band), then Screaming Bloody Murder was more heavy and experimental again. The SBM tour was rough on them, and it ended with the drummer leaving the band and Deryck nearly dying of alcohol poisoning. Thankfully he pulled through and has been sober ever since. Dave rejoined the band after reconnecting with Deryck, and they've released two heavier albums since then (13 Voices and Order In Decline), both of which are very good. Their next album is going to be called "Heaven & Hell," and it's going to be a double album: side A will be pop-punk, side B will be metal.
    We're All To Blame came from their third full album "Chuck," which was definitely the most metal influenced album at the time. It was actually the last song they wrote for the album. Sum 41 had gone to the Congo in 2004 to film a documentary for War Child Canada, when a local ceasefire ended and fighting broke out right outside their hotel. The gunfire got so close that the band and the 40 other people trapped in the hotel with them were pretty sure they were about to die. Thankfully, a UN peacekeaper named Chuck Pelletier managed to secure the safety and evacuation of everyone in the hotel, so the band named their next album after him in tribute, and wrote We're All To Blame when they got home, which then became the album's lead single.
    If you're interested in more songs in this style from them, I'd recommend "Blood In My Eyes" from Screaming Bloody Murder (maybe a lyric video, since the music video is long and mixes other songs into it), "Goddamn I'm Dead Again" from 13 Voices, and "Out For Blood" from Order In Decline.

    I’ll never forget seeing sum41 live at vans warped tour. When they came on, everyone STORMED the mosh pit. And Deryck saw us storm the gates and said how were all a bunch of crazy motherfuckers. Ah it was magical

      oh, actually it was something with mass shooting. Some fans that where during videoshoot, stated that it was in some theatre. alot of fake blood and stuff, but what happen basiclly is that band didn't think its worth for anyone to see and now...looking at what times we are living, i don't think we will ever see it.

    when they really lean into their influences like metal, this band kills it. Chuck and Screaming Bloody Murder are both great albums

    These are new songs to me also. I’ve heard Fat Lip and Still Waiting back in the day, but that was mostly because those songs appeared on video game soundtracks. I always enjoyed the songs and appreciated the musicianship, but for one reason or another never dove in further. Thanks for opening my eyes to them again Cheezy.

    I really remember a short version of "We're All To Blame" come on while I was watching "Godzilla:Final Wars". As soon as Godzilla fights Zilla,safe to say it was made short 'cause Zilla got owned.

    I use to have a blink 182 album that a metalhead friend gave me because he thought it sucked. It wasn't metal but it was good music very catchy and it really grew on me. Sum 41 singles gave me a similar vibe but with a more aggressive energy. I should probably check out their new stuff just to see how they evolved over the years.

    Punk/alternative crowds have an energy level that rivals metalcore without as much aggression. I say that only from my personal experience growing up in New York. Circle pits happened, but generally no wall of death for instance. Perhaps others have attended different venues where it was more hardcore. That said, Sum 41 is not a band I have seen live either.

    When Dave Baksh left the band in about 2006, they recruited Tom Thacker from Gob to replace him. I'm not a super fan of either band, just know the singles, but Gob had the same kind of energy and sensibilities as Sum41.
    Derryck has had some substance abuse issues, but he's been clean for a while now, as far as I know. He was married to, then divorced, then produced an album for, Avril Lavigne.
    Another similar band, same era, from the same general area, also playing together since high school, is Billy Talent. Try out Red Flags or Rusted from the Rain. They're less poppy than Sum, a little more punk.

    This band is so cool and has strangely alot of Christian themes in their music. The newer albums are very metal

    • @muss1484
      @muss1484 5 місяців тому

      It’s ironic their singer is a believer of god and their original drummer was an atheist lol. The christian themes are strong at points in their music
