Amazing documentary. It always amazes me to see items left how they were hundreds of years ago. I can’t wait to hopefully see more of this type of stuff.

The thousands of hours that went into preserving the ship is astonishing . I cant even imagine how they figured out how to piece the ship back together with 300 year old timber, I found it ironic after we spent millions recovering it and brought it off the bottom of the ocean and preserving it then the French step in oh by the way we are not going to reimburse you but that ship is ours . Didnt come with any money but or workers but its ours now. I would of told them to get bent ! Like the IRS you spend millions recovering Gold from a sunken ship and they get wind of it after you brought it back up and slap you with a huge tax bill ! Never fails

New international negotiations have extended the rights of all nations over their historic wrecks worldwide.
You might wonder who has the rights to the Confederate warship CSS Alabama sunk off the North Coast of France in the English Channel?

Texas could always have slapped a lien on it for the full cost of salvage including discovery and volunteer labor, then started running up the bill for storage. I suspect France would quickly decide to gift the ship to them. But the negotiated agreement is much better for all concerned. The fact that it is still a French naval vessel gives it an extra cache and there's already so much historic old stuff in France that they'll never want it back.

The famous vikingships of Skuldelev in Denmark, was excavated in a cofferdam in 1962. And they can all be seen at the museum in Roskilde.

The French were very active during this time. The French established the first settlement in N. America at Ft. Caroline in 1564, but it was captured by the Spanish the next year and they established St. Augustine.

The French government has been dissolved multiple times since 1686 which resulted in a default of their debts. The new governments claimed that they were not responsible for old debt since the prior government had been dissloved. Hence, the modern French entity should have no claim to the La Belle.

@@evilrainbow
