Amazing documentary. It always amazes me to see items left how they were hundreds of years ago. I can’t wait to hopefully see more of this type of stuff.
The thousands of hours that went into preserving the ship is astonishing . I cant even imagine how they figured out how to piece the ship back together with 300 year old timber, I found it ironic after we spent millions recovering it and brought it off the bottom of the ocean and preserving it then the French step in oh by the way we are not going to reimburse you but that ship is ours . Didnt come with any money but or workers but its ours now. I would of told them to get bent ! Like the IRS you spend millions recovering Gold from a sunken ship and they get wind of it after you brought it back up and slap you with a huge tax bill ! Never fails
New international negotiations have extended the rights of all nations over their historic wrecks worldwide. You might wonder who has the rights to the Confederate warship CSS Alabama sunk off the North Coast of France in the English Channel?
Texas could always have slapped a lien on it for the full cost of salvage including discovery and volunteer labor, then started running up the bill for storage. I suspect France would quickly decide to gift the ship to them. But the negotiated agreement is much better for all concerned. The fact that it is still a French naval vessel gives it an extra cache and there's already so much historic old stuff in France that they'll never want it back.
What an interesting & most informative vidi!!! It is said that 1bis never 2 old 2 learn something new, & here @ 80 years of age I,in South Africa, has learnt something completely new.
The French were very active during this time. The French established the first settlement in N. America at Ft. Caroline in 1564, but it was captured by the Spanish the next year and they established St. Augustine.
The French government has been dissolved multiple times since 1686 which resulted in a default of their debts. The new governments claimed that they were not responsible for old debt since the prior government had been dissloved. Hence, the modern French entity should have no claim to the La Belle.

I remember as a kid them bringing up the marie rose in the thames, as a kid i was fascinated but disappointed they brought up a piece of wood and it cost millions.
"marie rose in the thames"?? I'm not familiar with that one - just with 'Enry the 8th's ill-fated vanity project, the Mary Rose, which sank in the Solent and is now on display in Portsmouth.
There's no secret here. They got some questions answered like how was the ship built? Not a secret. It's all common joinery joint terry joint array joynery. What's the secret?
Really. A colossal waste of time, energy, and money. Digging up our old garbage to take up space indoors when it should be left to rot by nature. How many hundreds and thousands of craft have been discarded over the centuries?
QUESTION...............WHAT PRIMATIVE HAND TOOLS DID THEY HAVE IN 1686 BEFORE ANY POWER TOOLS??? WHERE DID ALL OF THEM RECEIVED THEIR TRADE IN 1686?? HOW LONG DID IT TAKE THEM TO BUILD THE SHIP?

The famous vikingships of Skuldelev in Denmark, was excavated in a cofferdam in 1962. And they can all be seen at the museum in Roskilde.

I am proud to be a direct descendant of Jaques Grolet, “Santiago Gurule.” Knowing he was on that ship from La Rochelle France.❤
Fascinating documentary. 👍👍

Cofer Dames were used on the raising of the Main. So this was NOT the first time this methode was used.
Not claimed!

Impressive work !
Magnifique travail ❤

We have jets the fly that are larger than many ships of the past. It's just amazing.
No doubt the experience of recovering the Mary Rose was of some benefit to other marine archeologists.
Le WASA a été sorti de l’eau avant.

show us the artifacts instead of talking about them!
Where is the Reconstruction???
They dismantled the remains piece by piece and rebuilt the boat in the museum.
Didn't you watch the documentary ?
Then the French Government most pay the cost of recovery or some part it to preserve the ship and equipment with the pieces of supply
Les américains n’étaient pas obligés de sortir La Belle de l’eau.
Les revenus perçus grâce au tourisme générés par La Belle serons au bénéfice du Texas.
Didn't the Irish recover a lot of Spanish ships cargo from the Armada that crashed on the Irish coast?

I wonder if the people commenting in this narration have heard of the Mary Rose, which is a larger undertaking?
En tant que français, je connais l'histoire de la Mary Rose. Il y a aussi le Wasa à Stockholm.

How cool is history!!
People complain that the space program is an inessential extravagance, but THIS has that one beat 10x.
For tourism --- it's the only reason I would ever return to Texas !
Not worth $18 million
Finally this wreck and the indigenous Indian community have brought some culture to this rotten country

Claiming then selling land that weren't theirs. The fact is the French invaded Spanish lands and stole them.
