I was 13 years old when this happened in 1974. All the Stars in the world were there. Most of them are gone now but what a great time it was it still makes me cry. Blessings 🙏💞
Let me simply say this - if they ever comprised a list of the top 7 Greatest movie endings in cinematic history - James Cagney would be responsible for 3 of them!!!! The Death Row scene in "Angels with Dirty Faces" Dancing Down the White House Stairs in " Yankee Doodle Dandy" and of course the iconic Petroleum Tower scene at the end of "White Heat" There will Never and I mean Never be another actor who could captivate a scene like the one and only James Francis Cagney - Class / Talent!!!
Cagney was the greatest gangster in the history of film...but you never hated him...showing his love for longtime friend Jerry the priest by playing a coward ....and showing his vulnerability by pleasing the only person he ever trusted...his mom...and showing his love of country in YANKEE...by improvising the tap dance full of pride after speaking to the President. i loved Cagney.... Great comment....
Mr. 0' Brien, I teared up reading your comment. I totally agree on the scenes you noted. The end of Angels is devastating and excruciating to see. He was the greatest entertainer and a great man. ❤🎉
There certainly will never be another james cagney he was in a class of his own, 👎no one could ever compete with him❤ we love him rip mr cagney gone but never forgotten 💙
Someone many years ago asked me if I could sit down with one person and have a conversation with them who would it be. Without hesitation I replied mr James Cagney and wished it had been on the porch of his ranch.
What can I say but James Cagney enriched my life. I loved watching him what's my father. I loved watching him in all the media that was available. An Irishman a Catholic and my God such a wonderful human being

When I seen him in Yankee Doodle dandy, that's all it took. Everything he does and learning that he's a great artist, that's icing on the cake. Love him, wish I could have met him
the great & best of Hollywood of all generations turning out to honour one of its most esteemed actors of his time ,sadly not many of them in that gathering , are still around , but faded into the annuals of film & books of history.
Thank you for uploading this. I had it on VHS but due being almost 50 years old, the tape has corroded. Just a shame the start of James Acceptance speech is missing, but I've seen it a few times on UA-cam. I'd emailed AFI to try to buy the ceremony, but they never replied. I had all of James Cagney films on DVD/Video or recorded from TV. Unfortunately I had to throw most away, due to videos being covered in white powder due to corrosion. Was great to see this again, especially Frank Sinatras musical tribute.
I love scanning the audience. There's Loretta Young, Mae West, George Raft, and so many other famous actors and actresses from the Golden Years of Hollywood
I know that unfortunately the start of James Cagney acceptance speech is missing (the 9 minute is available on UA-cam). IMDB states the tribute was 75 minutes in length. That may/may not include names etc.
A rich honor for James Cagney EVEN GREATER TO HAVE HIS ACADEMY AWARD CHAMPION YANKEE DOODLE DANDY ENDED UP #3 ON MY 100 GREATEST ! 1912-1958 Movie List!
James cagney, great 👍 actor, gangster, dancer, and all around great Yankee doodle dandy nobody could go near him cagney was the greatest in a class by himself God's gift 🎁 to all of 🇺🇸 us❤😂❤😂😂😂
They Just Do Not Make Them Like James Cagney Anymore . Legend. Love the memory of him in films. Brings back a Lot of Good Memories of my Childhood going to see his movies. R.I.P. Jimmy and All the other stars who are no longer with us. May they All Rest In Peace. XXXXX
When he danced it was like he was floating on air,he was a great man r.I.p mr Cagney….. my mother thanks you,my father thanks you ,my sister thanks you and I thank you,the only man to dance down the white house stairs
Jimmy Cagney did return to performing in two more films"Ragtime" in 1981 and "Terrible Joe Moran". He also appeared briefly at one of the "Night Of 100 Stars"Tv specials..which was taped at NYC's "Radio City Music Hall" and he was interviewed for a tv tribute to his career"James Cagney:That Yankee Doodle Dandy" and for "The Tomorrow Show".
Cuánto eché de menos que el AFI no le diera su reconocimiento anual a titanes del cine como John Wayne, Bing Crosby, Robert Mitchum, Burt Lancaster, Charlton Heston, Tony Curtis, Randolph Scott, Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant, Charlie Chaplin, Norma Shearer, Jean Arthur, Jean Simmons, Olivia de Havilland, Maureen O'Hara
Boy what a treat and that Yankee Doodle dance and music at this time with the world upside down was heart warming and busting with pride. The stars at the salute were some of the greatest what a treat. Sinatra as all ways old blue eye and charming he was a blessing.

Thanks for the upload. There seems to be a lot missing here. The original is around 90 minutes. Were there copyright issues?

He played FLT ADM James Halsey Jr. so fantastically well, it was almost spiritual.
The soundtrack was equally moving, if not more.
Fantastic!! Never saw this before!! What a night!!!
James Cagney returned in 1980 to make one last movie, Ragtime, with Pat O'Brien.
Loved that introduction by George Stevens Jr. who is still alive as of April, 5, 2024...
