More theory just means you can have better writing and improv skills (More music based), speed and technique (More muscle memory based) you get from practice

And while that is true in many contexts, having cool bass counter melodies or even a bassline being the driving force in a song usually sounds great and can add a lot. Just producers oversimplifying everything and underestimating the listening skills and pallete of the average listener, I guess

Guitar players aren’t the only people that do it, and are probably more likely than nearly all pop producers to let you go off on a bass

Justin Chancellor of TOOL uses a pick, and is one of the most melodically talented players in my opinions.
Weird stigma about using pick for bass. Sometimes its a good sound for the mix. Playing without a pick just felt more natural to me personally.
Just an fyi, TRY THICKER PICKS. I normally play .88 or 1mm picks on guitar. I play bass best with like, 1.5mm Clayton triangles
