Woodturning - The Cherry Log

- In this weeks Woodturning video, I used a lovely piece of cherry on the wood lathe to make a Decanter, the turning was pleasant with this piece of Cherry as it usually is.
As you can see the log definitely had a fair few cracks in and this was due to it not being sealed early enough after being cut.
If you enjoy the videos then please do subscribe as it helps us massively and thanks for watching!

Hi Ian, Beautiful shape to the decanter, almost like a ship's decanter. Great work as always mate. Take care. Cheers, Huw
Thanks very much Huw!
Did you hollow the inside?
What were you applying as a finish? I could see the word Chestnut on the can, but I’m not sure what it is.
I’ve had a look through the video and it is sanding sealer.
I think you cant do that with coconut wood.
Never know until you try Ben!
Can I call you Coach?
Haha I would follow books and guides on Woodturning as some of my practices aren’t textbook 😂
@@IanMacWoodturning I call it look and learn, so am looking, haha.
@@MickyBellRoberts Haha well good luck mate, keep me updated on how you get on
@@IanMacWoodturning I will, hopefully, haha.
Was the wood dry when you started turning?
It was around 11%
Except that is not cherry. That is a birch log.
No Chris, that’s a Cherry log.. I cut it down myself.
@@IanMacWoodturning My apologies, the Cherry we have here in Pennsylvania looks very different. Maybe the difference is maturity of the tree. Our bark looks more like large (brown to grey) corn flakes.
No worries, that sounds more like Black Cherry which has lots of wood chips to make up the bark, this is Sweet Cherry (Prunus Avium) which has vertical lines across called Lenticels, I can understand the confusion though because they don’t really look too much alike haha
@@IanMacWoodturning I certainly did not mean to bust your chops with my first comment. We have some River Birch that have very similar bark. I think you are right. I asked my wife, who studied old growth forests in College and she said the cherry we have around here is Prunus serotina (Black Cherry). Good speaking with you!
Yeah no problem at all mate, I was probably a bit short with my first response & I can see why you’d think it could be Birch with the horizontal markings on it! Good speaking with you my friend
