Thing took off like Bobby Bouchey Much respect to you and the man that saved this old mower all these years. And to u getting it running and keeping it alive. Glad to see it didn't end up in a junk yard. Keep doing what your doing brother
I was having a real stressful week...and then You posted this video. . I thank you...I appreciate all your hard work Brother....God Bless you and yours !
gotta love old Kohler flatheads. when I got my 1974 Wheel Horse B-80 it'd been sitting for at least 20 years, and it also had no compression, because the intake valve was stuck wide open; all I did was take the head off, soak the valve stem in oil, and play whack-a-mole for a bit. ran great with a carb and points clean once I put it back together. the deck on mine was also missing, but I ended up finding it four years later at the same property, in a scrap pile under a bunch of 1950's bicycles. somehow all the spindles aren't even stuck!
The two reverse gears makes it 8 speed. Those old wheel horses were awesome tractors. I popped wheelies on mine. Originally an 8 hp, I blew the engine and replaced it with a 10. The weak part of mine was the steering. I abused the old thing, but it kept on going. Wish I hadn't got rid of it, but we moved away, and I had no need for it. The John Deere from the Big Blue Box store leaves a lot to be desired.
Get you a used Simplicity from about 2004-2006 for less than $800. Best lawn tractor I've ever had. Posi rear that it had will put it anywhere you want to go. Steel body and frame, no plastic rear end, great mowers
Nice, an old farmer gave me a wheel horse 416-8 that had sat rotting in a field for about 25 years. It is a 1980s model. All the rubber, wire harness, and seat was rotted. The gear shifter was broke off inside the tranney. I drug it home and replaced all of the wires, tires, hoses, cleaned out the mice nests and hornets nest. Well I got the old girl running and now she is my daily driver for chores and hauling heavy loads around my property. I also use it for mud tractoring and trail riding.
50 years old and pretty much fired right up. I love old machines that were built by people that cared, and when longevity was more important than profit. It even quit smoking when all the tranny fluid burned off.
I have 7 of these tractors from 1967 to 1992 and they are great machines! If you want to keep that nice old patina, clean the tractor really good and then rub it down with boiled linseed oil, she'll look great! You might want to pull that engine cover to make sure there aren't any rodent nests under there. I have found a few in the tractors I got that set awhile.
i have older Sears/Roper Garden tractors..and the first thing i do is remove the tin ( usually pull engine to make it easier to get them off ) and check for rodent nests ( rarely none in them ) or at least clear the decades of dirt and grass from the cylinder fins ..or oil crud ( dirt/grass/oil sludge ) ...better to cool them from then on than start a fire or overheat....
I never cared for this linseed oil put on a machine like this or other brans of tractors. I'd rather paint the tractor and have a new paint job on it and keep it washed and waxed and in good looking condition instead of this linseed oil look which makes the tractor look like a pile of junk and a basket case.
Found this gem of a video, Dad had one when I was a kid about 12 (81 ish), He didnt have the deck, but morphed this little thing into a monster. He added a 18HP and welded wider wheels with tractor tread and weights. We pulled a 8 foot disc to break ground. It was used in combination with a old 62 chevy bed trailer to haul firewood. he had to install wheelie bars to keep us kids from getting crushed when it hung up pulling a full load. What a powerful little tractor. I dont know how many much bigger tractors had a quality rear chunk that could compete for durability.
" it's got a shut off valve" reminds me of when my brother called me and said the gasoline edger wouldn't start. That edger always started on the first pull. So I asked him to check the tank for gasoline. It was empty. What a Dumas my brother always was.
My grandfather had one of those! That’s what I learned about four stroke engines on. Had an old gravelly also. Had to rap the rope front pulley to start.
Grew up with my grandfather's 1968 wheel horse raider 10, used to mow the yard until my dad hit a big rock and bent one of the spindles on the deck, scrapped the deck but still have the tractor in the back yard. Yes that lever on the side engages the mower deck, dad used it for spreading gravel with blade that is still there also
I have a 312A Wheel Horse I brought back from a 20 year slumber last year. It is a great machine I replaced a few bearings cleaned out fuel system and carb and she runs great. The Kohler fuel pump is weak and looses prime so I wired a small electric pump that only runs while cranking the engine the factory pump will run the engine fine but not start it if it sits
Those are very tough tractors, I had one that I Built a front end loader for, and it would take a lot of punishment and come back for more, never once did I burn a belt, That being said , The only weak part was the steering it had a tendency to skip gears When there was too much weight on the front, great video thank you very much
Chad? You are like the Willy Wonka of Machinery? Vehicles parked randomly throughout the property. Various appliances holding down the lawn like a crazy game of handyman crochet. If I aspire to even a fraction of your machine whispering I'll live to a ripe old age of a hunnert. Prolly? Good on ya Old Boy.
Well if we were going to be in Tennessee we'd come see you but we're stuck in New Mexico. Oh and by the way if this UA-cam thing don't work out you can always start singing for a living.....🤣🤣👍 Great video.
Thanks brother for posting this video! My wife and I bought an old Wheel Horse Raider 12 about a year ago to use for a backyard project. It came with the original snow blade and rear tilt wagon! Awesome tractor, but unfortunately, it sat outside over the winter, and I'm having trouble getting it started this season. This video is helpful, so I'm gonna try to work on it again this afternoon, checking some of the components you tested also. I may reach out if I keep having trouble; maybe you can help lol. -Keith
I’ve been watching your channel since the pole barn video. Love your videos man! I enjoyed the revival of the square body in the woods. Hope you can find a IH built garden tractor one day and do a revival on that! Keep the videos coming!
Love those old wheely horses. The old koler engines were basicly bullet pruff made many a hot rod tractors out of those red beauties. They never have decks lol out of the 20 or so I've owned over the years I've had 1 deck a few plows and 2 tillers. But best thing about them put big pully on rearend and small on engine if you get it just right they fly. There not at all safe but can be so fun and cheaper than a quad. The way the clutch is on those models makes the speed upgrade so easy. Cool find. Have fun. I need a new 1 think my bro has 1 hiding in the shed may sew if he'll let me play with it for old times sake. We both got 1 when we were like 8 and 12. Dad loved junk still does lol well other call it junk we call it stuff its replacement parts its custom parts it use what you have on hand and get it done. The neighbors hate it until some of it helps them out. Lol. Sorry for the book this sent me down memory lain.
Way back when I owned a farm (before the divorce), I mucked about with a couple of small tractors like that. One day my neighbour brought his late-1960s, early-1970s Deere 3-cylinder diesel over. It wasn't working well at all. Why he thought I (a software developer and scientific instrumentation developer) could help with his tractor is beyond me. However, they're simple devices--this one used a rotary injector pump, and it became clear that two of the output ports on the injector pump were plugged. Got that cleared up, and it ran great for a while. Then they stopped up again. Pulled the fuel filter apart--what was left of it, anyway. The filter had decayed and was "throwing chunks" into the fuel system. "When did you change this filter last?", I ask, innocently "Never". He got a new fuel filter, we unplugged the ports again, ran fine for years afterwards. Now, the *punchline* of this story? He, like me, was only a part-time farmer. HIs "day job"? Automotive mechanic at the local GM dealer. Something about "the cobblers children....".
I really love your videos. It's nice to see all these old machines come back to life. I also hate this kind of clamps. Continue your videos by taking pleasure in making them, it's always funny and you do not impose yourself as a teacher like many people on YT. Take care of yourself. Didier from France.
Love your content. Would love to see video of the show and your tractors! We have several we show. My boys pride n joy is a 1938 Allis WC he rescued from a tree line and he’s currently replacing head gasket on a 1929 Mc Cormick Deereing 22-36. She’s a beast! Keep up the great work!
Excellent video Chad :) also Workhorse Lawn Tractor great machines my cousin Dave has one with lawn deck had long time and still running excellent plus his has hydraulics for 3 point hitch on plus tiller attachment garden work and blade for Winter Season months in Ontario Canada! He run 89 or 91 octane gas plus no synthetic engine oil of 10w30 and change oil ever 3 months plus fuel filter to it last lifetime!
Yes had one of wheel horse mower with the deck cut great I had the points and the governor problem gave it to my son he sold it a few years ago when he lost interest in the mower 😊😊😊
I’ve had 2 of them growing up and they made ALOT OF different ATACHMEnTS and definitely over engendered. That clutching pulley system is on the side of the motor u better have a couple new on hand because they don’t last too long. I’ve even had to push it with my foot to keep attachments/mower deck working. They are just fun to drive around town with my friends when I was 7-9yrs old and the wheel hires kicked everyone’s A$$!!!!
A 301 cast iron Kohler has a compression release that you'll think is freewheeling. Will just spin and spin. They're good motors. Good deal. Gravely walk behind and Troy- bilt tillers had them too. 8 horse on the Troy. 301 on the Gravely.
Those hose clamps are awful! You did an awesome job as usual. I’m having trouble with my POS rising lawn mower. Darn starters and solenoid are junk. They made them so much better back in the day.
Great Channel I love all the content you have a new subscriber here and I watch from the Midlands of South Carolina. These and the Commando 6's were beautiful little tractors. I'm not even that much of an old tractor enthusiast or anything, but they fascinate me the same as when you see jet engine internals for the same time. Jewel-like quality.
I have the 1970 version of the same Raider 12. I have two decks for it, a 42" and a 48". It doesn't mow anymore cause I keep a dozer blade on it all the time now.

And yep......as soon as you said there was no fuel flow, I was saying check for a shut off valve on the tank. My old 68 snapper was the same way. I used to like buying alot of pipe for the exhaust. I've made dual exhaust on those small engines before. Sounded like a motorcycle. Constantly had complaints about it. 😄 I know it's not good for the motor, but it sure sounded mean.
you need to adjust the governor loosen the nut and bolt on the governor arm pull the governor arm all the way twords the exaust and use a flat head to twist the rod that goes in the block counter clockwise and tighten the nut and bolt again

maybe need to take the shroud off on that engine, mice likes to build nests by the flywheel, other than that it was a great revival on this wheel horse, keep it up ;)
i used to have a wheel horse 4wd one i made it 4wd and took it mud racing once it brought memories of it dying in mud me getting it going and now its gone
That wheel horse had a tiller on it at ones point and time to should go see if the guy you got it from has the tiller I see the pulleys for it on the frame
Brings back a lot of memories first job out of high school Small engine repair shop worked on those all the time
Thing took off like Bobby Bouchey
Much respect to you and the man that saved this old mower all these years.

Well that was a success, Nice going for a freebee, Have fun at the tractor show!!! Stu from Canada...
Great video! I really like watching you get things running..
that bird is the same as me just sitting back laughing and enjoying your commentary' love your work
I love your videos. You incorporate humor and a lot of helpful information.
My grandfather had one of those! That’s what I learned about four stroke engines on. Had an old gravelly also. Had to rap the rope front pulley to start.
Awesome find! Love those old yard tractors!
The black plastic piece that hit your foot at the beginning if your video...
That is the center cap for the steeringwheel.
My first tractor I learned to drive on was a Wheel Horse. Awesome fun I had.
With a little effort and knowledge you got her sounding pretty good 👍☮️🇺🇲
I love hearing them start up after working on them. Best feeling ever. I recently restored a B-100 Automatic. Wheel Horses are the best!
Great job as always Chad!
I cut my lawn with a 814 on its second deck. Must be one of the best machines ever made. Solid construction
Grew up with my grandfather's 1968 wheel horse raider 10, used to mow the yard until my dad hit a big rock and bent one of the spindles on the deck, scrapped the deck but still have the tractor in the back yard. Sounds good to me. Love to see these great old machines run again.Has always Liked, shared. All my very best.
Thanks for the show.
Your creative use of words, I believe, is a sign of superior intelligence. I do it too. "Electrisicals" is my favorite😄

Love the ole wheel horse tractor’s they don’t make anything the way they used to that’s for sure
Well if we were going to be in Tennessee we'd come see you but we're stuck in New Mexico. Oh and by the way if this UA-cam thing don't work out you can always start singing for a living.....🤣🤣👍 Great video.

I have the same exact lawnmower that I use ever day. It cost us 400 dollars and the thing can and will tow vehicles in low gear.

Man I wish I could get to meet you. My days of trawling are over sadly. I hope you get to video some of it. I would love to watch. All my very best.
The bird was an American Robin BTW lol. Thanks for this video I love your channel man!!!
Super fluid 577 is high temp transmission fluid. I guess the 5-gallon cans were for farm or industrial sales. Pretty cool old cans.
Nice work Chad 🙂👍 Enjoyed the video
👍

That's the PTO clutch and the mower deck belt goes across those two mule pulleys.
I have the 1970 version of the same Raider 12. I have two decks for it, a 42" and a 48". It doesn't mow anymore cause I keep a dozer blade on it all the time now.
Great video
I was working on my wife's Honda Pilot this spring.. poor thing wiped a camshaft (low oil issue) and man, i'm telling you when i got to the coolant section or the rebuild, I about lost a lot of tools with those darn split clamps on the little heater hoses and all.. I spent a lot of time (the police came to check on me) swearing on those clamps. I should've just bought the little tool but i was stubborn about it. Fixed the engine though.
edit: watching you say you're going to get some pliers for those darn clamps.. I ended up going to the extreme, I tac welded a cut in half washer on either side of a crappy needle nose.. it lasted like 2 tries but it finally got those darn things back on.. OMG I hate HATE those clamps I'm burning up right now thinking about it!!
I tried the exact same thing with needle nose and washers! 🤣
I feel your pain with that bird. I got a mourning dove that just will not sthu.
Bring on a thunder I definitely did see Spark
Nice ol raider! Didn't nit see a voltage rectifer good luck with charging the battery
I love them old mowers. My father had many. Many many small engines layin around too. All but 1 (was a very early motor) ran. I hear your knee pain. My right one needs replacement, but I'm stubborn. 😄 And the problem with having to use a screwdriver on something only, I've found out pressing on the screwdriver while taking vice grips to the handle to turn it adds alot more torque. You take a chance breaking the screwdriver, but it saves your hands from becoming too sore.
The back of the seat should be two rivets with springs in the middle, that's your shocks .lol
sweet free rider wish i had one to mow my parents big yard lol
Linseed oil and paint the wheels white and I will look nice patina 👍👍👌
you need to adjust the governor loosen the nut and bolt on the governor arm pull the governor arm all the way twords the exaust and use a flat head to twist the rod that goes in the block counter clockwise and tighten the nut and bolt again
You must have missed that part.
I love the older stuff it was made to last just made better if ya ask me 😀
Nice Clean up Chad! Perhaps you can find the lawn cutter!
Teres a shut off Tap on the side bulk head behind the Lift Lever- just a round 1/2 inch diameter tap- zinc coated when new- probably rusty now
Nice work
The background bird chatter sounds like the American Robin. I Googled American Robin sounds. Sure sounds like it. They are common here in Boise, Idaho.
I'm gonna buy it a muzzle whatever it is.
Dadgum if you ain’t from N.C. you can’t be far from it.😆👍
If you have the right tool those clamps are just fine
They make awesome mud mowers if you can’t find the deck…😂 I’ve thought about building one myself… Lmao
maybe need to take the shroud off on that engine, mice likes to build nests by the flywheel, other than that it was a great revival on this wheel horse, keep it up ;)
It blew it all out and was getting plenty of airflow.
The bird is a Mocking Bird
i used to have a wheel horse 4wd one i made it 4wd and took it mud racing once it brought memories of it dying in mud me getting it going and now its gone
A Knee Replacement Chad? Not Likely! It’s those Standard Transmission Vehicles that you Drive!
K series Kohler engines have an automatic compression relief built in!
So do Briggs but that doesn't relieve all compression.
I believe that lever is for a snowblower if one came with the tractor guessing he has a snowblower for it
That’s the pto handle the drive belt is behind the belt Gard I’m sure you know that by now
17:18 Fuel tank and line were okay huh... Gas can has a big freakin' leak! 🙂 lmbo
Put some of visegrip garage shine juice on that...
I think the bird is a Robin.
that rats nest behind the engine shroud is gonna cause overheating issues. you could see the crap fly out when you first started it
Nice gówno 👌😅
Hard to kill a K series Kohler...got a couple of old cub cadets. tough little engines.
