One trick I show in this presentation is using the left thumb as a jig. By holding the left thumb, and controlling the thumb with the right hand, I find my students have greater success getting their dropped middles centered. I tell my students they all need to find the way that works best for them. I encourage them to hold the outside of the wall with their left hand as they pull open the wall with their right hand. This helps keep the wall stable and of even thickness.
Just remember, you must always have pressure from all sides, top, side, (bottom=bat) and if opened, the interior when you are trying to center. If you remove pressure from any one of those areas, the off centered clay will move to the place of least resistance, and will stay off centered.

I often tell my students they learn more from their mistakes than from their successes in throwing. New to pottery and taking classes. You explain so well and it's much appreciate and SO helpful.
Question - how much clay should a new person start with to practice? 1LB?
I usually have my kids start with the size of an orange- or fist sized- like 1 1/4 lbs perhaps? That way it is less likely to generate too much recycle! If you have a flop, try to eliminate as much slip as possible and set it aside for an hour or so then it can be wedged again!
I am still struggling on pulling the walls. I am too gentle. I have watched this video many times. I still can't seem to pull up without throwing off the centre or too much pressur to cause it to be too thin
How thick should the completed cylinder wall be? I would imagine a mug has a generally preferred thickness for drinking. Not as important if a vase. Thank you
Hi Tracy! Sorry for the delay! I like my walls to be a little thinner than 1/4". I'd approximate 3/16". :)

I can't figure something out... I earlier videos it says if you're right handed you should go clockwise but... Is this going counter clockwise??? I just practiced tonight and I'm right handed and I had a lot more luck going counterclockwise also... I'm so confused 😅
In earlier videos I should have always said counter clockwise for right handed!! I’d only recommend clockwise for left handed! In the centering video I go into a bit of the difference between the left and right hand rotation. :)

What cloth is being used under the bat and why?

The inside is soaking wet
Undercut the bottom. Should be keeping wheelhead dry and clean at base of pot first pull up should have gotten you higher.
