This is seriously the best tutorial for these things. I just spent a half hour searching videos that were much more trouble than they were worth. This one showed EVERY step. Great work and THANK YOU!
At last! A tutorial I can follow. I’ve wasted so much money, fabric and time trying to work out how to attach these little blighters. Thank you SO much!
Perfect! Exactly what I was looking for, so well explained that I was done quicker than the time spent trying to figure out the instructions on the packet! And I was even doing bibs!
What a wonderful video! It made things SOOOOOOO clear to me! I was almost in tears earlier today because EVERY tutorial I saw only confused me more, but this one is clear as can be and super easy to follow! Thank you so very, very much.
Thank you very much for this video. It helped me tremendously replace my fastener on a canvas bag that was given to me and brought it back to life. Your tip on what side goes where was very much appreciated, as I am not a professional sewer and helped me read the instructions more carefully and helped my understanding. Bravo to You!
Super helpful video! Accidentally ripped my daughters button off of her overalls and she was devastated. This video saved me a ton of time and money. Thank you!
OMG!!!!!! I did a Google search for easy instructions...wished I had found your tutorial before I ruined 3 snaps...your instructions were too easy to follow...thank you so much!
thanks wendy! I have watched two tutorials, 1. the bias tape corners, and 2. this snap tutorial, you are very good at explaining, thank you! I will be buying some snaps for my project.
Wendi, your videos are the most elequent and well fimed of all the sewing videos I have viewed on youtube. I really appreciate all of those close up zoom in shots so I can really see what you are doing. Thank you so much!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I had a satin bodysuit I couldn't "wear", as the studs would just pop open when walking or getting up from a chair. Following your tutorial I've REPLACED them with a Birch Poppa set all by myself! It's BRILLIANT.
I really appreciate you covering how not to place the snaps. It is nice to know I am not the only one that does this sort of mistake, valuable point you given. Great job! I enjoyed your video.
I got magnetic snaps thinking it would be easier. Its not and they're bulky. But I couldn't even figure out how these particular teeth snaps go together. Thank you so much for explaining this, it's people like you who help the world move creatively. Cheers
I bought this tool set several months ago and haven't used it yet so I'm glad I found your video! Thanks so much for showing how to attach these snaps!
I just bought mine in a big box fabric store. I don't think it's sold separately. You can buy a set of snaps with the die packed with it, and then buy additional snaps without the die.
Omg seriously. I didn't know these existed. I am only used to the sew on ones and also assumed you would need expensive equipment and bits to do it professionally. I have sewn one on recently and although it worked it looked messy with stitching showing through on one side which is visible etc. Took quite a while as well with a 2 year old climbing all over me. Seriously going to look for these now in the UK. Thank you.
Wow! I seriously did not have any idea how snaps ever went on. Thank you so much. I'm new to sewing and doing crafts, and this is something I've passed by cuz I always thought it was more trouble than it was worth.
I have had a project sitting in the corner for over a year now with me procrastinating on the snaps. Needless to say the baby girl bubble piece of clothing I had made, the baby is now in a 2T so it will have to go to another infant. Thank you SO much for your easily explained tutorial on snaps. My husband grits his teeth when he hears me banging because the bad words that follow after I mess something up!
Thanks so much for this easy to follow demonstration! I could not understand the package directions. I installed the snaps with ease after watching this video!
Very good instructions. I need to add some snaps to my dogs' winter coats that I bought. This is perfect. I don't know how to sew, so I am relieved that no sewing is required.
I have this page bookmarked, and each time I'm doing a sewing project that requires one of these snaps, I open up this page. As I'm doing right now! It's a great tutorial.
I’ve searched videos a bunch of times and they always go to fast or don’t use words to say which or what. Thank you for this video!! I finally can use my snaps and I realized I’m missing that little hammering nail thing. Plus keep a small hammer in my sewing area instead of a huge one from the garage everytime I wanna snap! ;) Thank you!! 💙
The tools are different sizes to go with different-sized snaps. To take them apart you need to pry the two halves back apart with a screwdriver - but I've only ever had one break.
* * * Seven years after posting this video, and it's still bringing joy to so many new sewists... (grin) Thanks for sharing, Wendi. . . * * * Like MiracleElixir indicated not so long ago, I thought it would be a bit more complicated... Come to find out, it's 𝐚 𝐬𝐧𝐚𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐥... (wink) [ I so crack me up... ] * * * Until that time. . .
@isolatediglooo I think most plastic snaps use a special tool to attach them - but definitely look at the packaging and check. You never know when something new comes on the market!
I don't have "the tool" but I have a hand riveter used to put in those long rivets in carpentry work, and it has an attachment that hoods the "outie" perfectly in place as I use good old hammer to whack it in place!!!❤❤❤ Oh, the things I'm going to now make are insane!!!!! Thank you a million times!
This was most informative. I have a bag full of snaps and have yet to try to work with them. I'm going to be busy now, I can assure you. Thank you so much!
@liz6421 I've never tried them in duct tape - but I don't see any reason why they wouldn't work. The pointy bits are sharp enough to go through it - so it should work. Good luck!
I got mine at a big box fabric store (probably Hancocks). They're right there with the snaps - you can buy sets with or without the tool. It's just packaged in the compartment with the snaps so you really have to look to see the difference - at a glance it looks like it's just a bigger pack of snaps.
Thank you so much for this video! I was having such a time lining up the sew-on snaps, and they just didn't seem secure (pulling away from fabric after lots of passes through the holes with thread). This seems very do-able.
I'm so glad I found your video. It wasn't as hard as it looked on the packaging after you explained it. Thank you! No more sewing on snaps for me. Those little suckers are slippery.
Wendy~Thank you so much for this tutorial. I just bought my first pack of snaps today and the directions were confusing on the package. Your video was very clear and easy to understand. Much appreciated!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Those are the type of snaps I have (except bigger)!!! Now I just need to find the metal piece that goes under the hammer. Your video is easy to follow. I'm relieved! 😅😅
Hi Wendi - great video! I use the "handle" end of the tool to push those prongs through the fabric, instead of my fingers, mine fits perfectly into the round..... hope that makes sense!
Watching this made the lightbulb go on about attaching snaps. I was just staring at the snap section in confusion today! Now feeling much more confident about them. Thanks for the video!
I haven't done pearl snaps before because they usually require a special tool that's VERY expensive. But I just discovered a manufacturer who has fancy colored snaps (and pearl snaps!) with an inexpensive snap setting tool. The company is called Snap Source and they have excellent resources on their website.
This was a life saver video I was stuck trying to put in poppet fasteners and this video helped me get it right. Only problem is i ruined all of the snaps in the pack except for the last one I used with your instructions lol
Wendy, thanks 1 million I fail at those things to the point where I just stopped using them (and I really like them)! Ive got the Dritz brand and I’ve got like five of those little tools that the hammer hits and you have very clearly identified the pieces and explained the procedure to where someone like me can understand. 🤪I Think thank you
Your tutorial is awesome. The "Inny and Outty" reference is brilliant (I LOL'd).... "Now you have to think" about the placement of the 2nd snap... Oh crikey I LOL'd again. I'm off to my sewing room to replace 10 snaps (after I made Hubby pull them off a shirt that was purchased with dodgy ones. Fingers crossed it works. Thanks again.
Thank you very much for going into the detail of the one piece that is the same on both sides. I was really trying to figure out which way was the correct way. Very good video!!
Thank you so much, I can't begin tell you how many of those little horrors have found their way into the bin. I got to the point where I decided that sew on snaps might be ugly but at least I actually got to wear the garment. Very helpful now I just have to buy some more of these snaps. Xxx
I've tried using the pliers but I have a hard time getting an even crimp all the way around with them. Maybe it was the pliers I used (or my lack of hand strength) but I get better results with the hammer.
thank you wendi. I recently started using snaps and can't believe how easy they are. my first set came with a plastic blue tool which Broke on the first use. I'm definitely going to get the metal set!
Thank you Wendi for the video. You gave me the confidence I needed. When I looked at these pieces I was wondering how do they fit together, but now I know, easy.. thanks again.
my quilt have this snaps on, and some of them already cannot snap on, already loose for a few wash. thanks for sharing, i am going to try this right away
Thank you so much for your tutorial! I’m going crazy here, though. Beginner sewist. I have purchased a kit that has all the snaps, etc and the special tool for hammering. However, there isn’t a piece with sharp edge spikes to be seen! I’m so lost and frustrated!

Thank you! Your video made so much more sense than the instructions that were provided with the snaps!
Thank you so much for showing me how to do this. I was sewing the other snaps on and wasn't really happy with the way they looked. So, I bought some of these but hadn't had time to ask my mom how to put them on. (I'm a new sewer at 50. :o)
I'd love to use some of the pearl snaps that I see on menswear - but so far I can't find those that hammer on. They all seem to require a very expensive tool to apply them.
I made a lot of western shirts for a boyfriend some years ago and never purchased an expensive tool, I don't remember what I used, but, there is a cheaper way, the only thing I can say is, some of them cracked and getting the snap off to redo it, is really a pain, needed a jewelers snipping tool . I kind of think I used a hammer but the pearl part had a cushioned pan? so the force only went on the outer ring...which.... may be why some broke, before internet... no way to search for a better tool ;-)
No worries about my cutting mat. The main floor of our house is concrete and I usually hammer there - but the light downstairs wasn't good enough for recording. I've never tried the plastic snaps - I don't want to buy a fancy tool either! They're quite expensive!
I lost the zip to my jacket, which I loved it very much. I did not want to throw away the jacket because I like its rare color and design and I get compliments on how good my jacket is and how good I look whenever I wear it. I wanted to either replace the zip or add snaps instead of zip to the jacket and was looking for a good solution on how to fix the zip problem. With that goal in mind, I was going through various youtube videos and luckily, stumbled upon this video. I bought the Dritz brand of snap fasteners, that comes with the tool, as the lady suggested in the video and bought them online on ebay (for about $7 including shipping, they are also sold on Amazon). I added snaps to my jacket and they work great. I am happy that I am being able to continue to use my beloved jacket. My suggestion, if you are planning to add snaps instead of buttons or zips for shirts or jackets, is that Dritz also sells them in packets of 4 snap fasteners and also 7 snap fasteners, you buy the one that has at least 7 snap fasteners so you could have snaps fastened a little close to each other. You can also buy the one with only 4 snap fasteners, but you have to add the snaps a little far from each other, which I don't suggest. This Dritz brand of snap fasteners work great.
I hadn't put snaps on in a long time and had to use this great video as a refresher. Back in the day, we used a hammer and a wooden thread spool which they don't make any more but i saved several just for this purpose. Thanks for explaining the up and down of the "innie". I wasn't sure.
Thank you so much for this video. Excellent job and I appreciate the little tips you give throughout. Do you know if it is possible to sew a decorative button over the snap and if so how is this done?
I think the only way you could do that is if the holes on the button were spaced bigger than the snap - so you'd be sewing around the snap. Hopefully that makes sense. :-)
👋👋Great video, thank you! I wish I watched this before trying it out myself, because I messed up like 3 of them. 😅😅 I was about to quit. Lol. Now I am more confidence to try it again! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Hi. Thanks so much for that. I have vintage Gripper snaps. Do you know if the tool will work with them? And where do I get that tool? I have a KAM press I use for resin snaps. But I like the metal better
This is great! I was looking for an inexpensive way to add snaps to the bibs I'm making. Thanks for this easy to understand video! (Bonus that you were also making bibs!)
Not that I've ever seen - but my fabric store has a prettylimited selection of notions. Check online. There are lots of places that sell neat snaps. Just be sure you aren't getting the kind that need a special tool to attach them.
I was afraid this video wasn't going to be helpful but it was thank you. I'm planing on making a jacket with snaps but I wasn't to sure how to put them on now I do because of your video. again thank you so much
I believe you just saved me from a crap load of frustration lol THANK YOU for a simple & straight to the point tutorial! I was JUST about to SEW ON a bunch of snaps where a zipper used to be (on a side sleeper pillow). Only thing that I'll probably do if I get these hammer ones.... I KNOW I'm gonna pound one of my fingers!! 😖👍😂
They didn't have the spiky fasteners where I shopped (and can't find my current supply) so I got the mini anorak snaps and tools kit (Dritz 33701) and that is way more complex than the spikes. Unfortunately I'll have to keep looking for how to apply those as the directions on the package are pretty minimal and Dritz doesn't cover them at all on their web site. You do excellent close-up shots with proper video lighting!
Very helpful! Thanks for posting. I've been looking for some way I could get around sewing a buttonhole, and this looks extremely easy! Glad I found it.
10 years later and still being useful! Thank you for the making this video.
This is seriously the best tutorial for these things. I just spent a half hour searching videos that were much more trouble than they were worth. This one showed EVERY step. Great work and THANK YOU!
I'm glad it was helpful! :-)
I agree whole heartedly ... will be purchasing this instead of expensive pliers!
Agreed! Thanks Wendy!
Dear Carissa: These are hammer-ons, whereas, in the other videos, they show the regular installation system.
I so agree, the best video ever!!!

I'm so glad they've been helpful! I have to thank my husband here - he's the one who does all the camera work. :-)
Super helpful video! Accidentally ripped my daughters button off of her overalls and she was devastated. This video saved me a ton of time and money. Thank you!

Worked at Joann's and people were always asking about these - Great, informational video!!

Thank you for this! love the innie, outie and spikey bits :)
Omg I don’t usually comment on videos but I have just installed my very first snap ever thanks to you! Thank you
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

O.M.G!!!! You have to be kidding me!!! So freaking easy and I didnt even know it. THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this video!!! I give you a 10!!!
I have reviewed the video many times and the directions are easy to follow. Thanks Wendi

Very good instructions. I need to add some snaps to my dogs' winter coats that I bought. This is perfect. I don't know how to sew, so I am relieved that no sewing is required.
Love your technical terms "spikey bit". Thank you for the tutorial!
You saved me a lot of money, I was so frustrated I was going to by a Kam snap table press. Now I can confidently do it this way. Thanks
I have this page bookmarked, and each time I'm doing a sewing project that requires one of these snaps, I open up this page. As I'm doing right now! It's a great tutorial.

I'm so glad I found your video. It wasn't as hard as it looked on the packaging after you explained it. Thank you! No more sewing on snaps for me. Those little suckers are slippery.
Wendi Thank you so so much. Perfect clip & easy illustrations all the way. Just what I needed for toddlers clothes, onzys, rompers etc.
Thank you. This is what I needed. I had a bag of these with no instructions or tools. I used a very small socket for the outtie.
Wendy~Thank you so much for this tutorial. I just bought my first pack of snaps today and the directions were confusing on the package. Your video was very clear and easy to understand. Much appreciated!!

I have always wondered how they worked. So cool I am totally going to do this!
Finally! Mystery surrounding this lifted with ease and without bells and whistles, thank you!!!

excellent! thank you... wow... now nice to be shown what to do, without over loud music and 15 minutes of dithering... great and very clear video!
Thank you Wendy; your tutorial gave me the confidence to try them.
Thank you so much, it took me half hour the first time on my own, but after watching your video it really was a snap.
+Mary A I'm glad it was helpful! I've since found a maker for cute colored snaps and I use them on EVERYTHING. :-)
Thank you very much for going into the detail of the one piece that is the same on both sides. I was really trying to figure out which way was the correct way. Very good video!!
You made this alot easier to understand, love your terminology, thank you.
Thank you so much Wendi! I was getting so confused shopping for snaps and now I know just what I am looking for :-)
Thank you so much, I can't begin tell you how many of those little horrors have found their way into the bin.

Thank you so much! Very well-done.
I would like to use colored ring-type snaps for baby clothes.
Are they also available by Dritz?
thank you so much for the video, I am new at sewing and want to make some bibs for my baby but didn't know how to work with snaps. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for showing me how to do this. I was sewing the other snaps on and wasn't really happy with the way they looked. So, I bought some of these but hadn't had time to ask my mom how to put them on. (I'm a new sewer at 50. :o)

What are you trying to do? Snap what to what part of the hat?
I lost the zip to my jacket, which I loved it very much. Thank you so much. I have been wanting to use snaps but unsure how. Your video is excellent.
Thank you. I bought a cheap set that kept popping out, and you answered what I was doing wrong. (I didn't poke the spiked end through first)
I hadn't put snaps on in a long time and had to use this great video as a refresher. Back in the day, we used a hammer and a wooden thread spool which they don't make any more but i saved several just for this purpose. Thanks for explaining the up and down of the "innie". I wasn't sure.
Thank you. I've always been afraid of snaps. You made it look easy.
Can't you sew the buttons on after hammering on the snaps?
Have you tried using the end of the tool from your first kit, to help push the fabric over the spikes?
Loved ur explanitaion!!! Simple to the point and it felt like a friend showing me. Thanks
Thank you so much for this video. Excellent job and I appreciate the little tips you give throughout. Do you know if it is possible to sew a decorative button over the snap and if so how is this done?

It does. Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly.
Great video! Just thought I would share that my instructions say that you push the back of the tool down to push the teeth through the fabric.
I'm planing on making a jacket with snaps but I wasn't to sure how to put them on now I do because of your video. again thank you so much
Oh my gosh!! I always used this kind of tricky snaps and it was the worst! Thank you so much!! It's awesome!!! :)
Practiced doing it on a small piece of material and turned out great! thanks xx
Is that tool flexible with snap sizes or do you buy a matching tool to go with each different size of snaps?
I love your termonology! great tutorial.
It depends on the store. Some have a sewing section and some don't.
