@@themoderndandy713 That’s the very problem with the argument though, never is an absolute. Life is seldom straight right and wrong, there are nuances, and context that needs to be considered. We can debate whether they mean it the way you interpreted it, but to quote the video, “If that’s what yo mean then that’s what you should say.”

This is a good rule of thumb for people you've just met, don't know well, and in professional settings. Some will be fine under certain contexts, sure, and there will be women who don't mind but it might be better err on the side of caution, especially if you're not sure.

@Gentleman’sGazette when the first Kingsman movie came out there was a list of rules for a modern Kingsman. It looks fun and it very well might be a good subject for a video sometime in the future.
    1. A gentleman never talks about conquests, private matters, or dealings. His business is nobody else’s.
    2. A gentleman never clashes in public with enemies or exes, or worse, with out-of-fashion contrasts, colors, or styles.
    3. A gentleman is always happy to serve, whether it’s opening the door, picking up the bill, or merely calling a cab the next morning. Ask him for help and he can not refuse.
    4. A gentleman never reacts to rudeness. He pretends he doesn’t recognize it and moves on like it never happened, because it never should have.
    5. A gentleman is always on target with witty remarks, interesting facts, and conversation starters that bring out the best in everyone.
    6. A gentleman asks non-invasive questions to keep a conversation going and attention focused on others. He makes the, feel like the most interesting person he’s ever met, whether that’s true or not.

If that is your intention, there are many ways to communicate that in a more tactful way. Do something nice for them, genuinely ask them how they are and engage in a conversation rather than making a statement that is loaded with lots of negative associations. If you want to help someone manage their weight, you don't say you gained weight since we last met. The person is probably keenly aware that they did... and you saying that just makes them feel bad. If you are not sure what to say, ask yourself, what would be the loving thing to say?

Even that first two questions (are you pregnant, (when) are you getting kids) is something that other women say to each other.
I'm never gonna have kids and I get that question enough times. At least I can deflect and say I haven't found the right person but a woman doesn't have that option - people will tell her she can adopt, or just get a man to donate, or whatever. It's insane!

About half of these are “just never say this to anyone ever” and the other half is “you’re not someone else’s boss.”
And that’s not a criticism of the video, mind you, just pointing out that consciously checking yourself on:
    1) what would I do if someone said this to me &
    2) do I have the relational equity to say that
Would stop most people’s social woes.

  • @th3n3wk1dd
    @th3n3wk1dd 3 роки тому +2

Context is everything. While I agree with most of the list, some of those are not insulting or not gender specific. For example "You're Crazy"... If you think that phrase is worse only sexist when said by a man to a woman but if said to another man it means something different. then "You're Crazy". (see what I did there). Anyone that can take non-gender specific terms and then makes them about gender is a red flag. Do not continue with forward with that relationship.
If you are trying to get on a woman's good side, stay clear of the "back handed compliments" like listed in this video. Some of those things though, if I heard "Mansplaining" used unironically.. The date will end right there. Anyone that uses a gender specific word that both genders can do isn't a match.
Smile, Thank her for her time and never see her again.

    1. "You'd look prettier if you smiled more" is the worst thing on here in my opinion. If you have issues with depression or some other similar mental health issues, these comments are patronizing, rude, and make you feel even worse about yourself. It's like telling a person in a wheelchair "you'd be happier if you just got up and walked". Please, never say that to anyone ever, in any way.
    2. I think a lot of these things start to become less problematic once you're in a relationship. Giving advice on appearance should be perfectly acceptable to a partner in my opinion, and that goes both ways. I believe the same for saying things like "you're crazy", or "is it your time of the month?". Those things can be fine for teasing with the right person.
    3. I tend to be more likely to lean towards "you're being emotional" or "you knew I was like this" considering I have Asperger's. I probably shouldn't tell people they're acting emotional, as much as neurotypicals can drive my crazy when they act that way, but if I'm going to date someone, they'll need to be accepting of my Asperger's and understand that I communicate and think differently, and try to meet me half way. If they aren't willing to do that, then there's no relationship to be had. Thus I will say "I told you I was like this" once they complain about my Autism.

The problem with some of this advice is devoided of necessary context to the situation one finds himself. For example, number 11 can be appropriate depending on the situation. If someone has the wrong perception about an event that happened between clients or work, then the expression can help reframe the conversation and steer it to the heart of the matter. Number 11 makes the lazy assumption that this expression is innately sexist or offensive; and it assumes there isn't a larger conversation going on.
The advice in this video also does NOT take into account that an actual prior conversation has occurred or is taking place. While some of these are obvious such as asking a woman if she is pregnant or she needs to smile. Offering unsolicited advice/opinions/intrusive questions always runs the risk to offend man or woman, nothing especially revelatory about limiting this to women only.
I think a closer examination of the assumptions and motivations to give this advice would underscore how a content creator sees its own audience or men at large.

I think it's more about that fact that when you say this, it's true to you, but it won't leave you in good standing with your partner if you think they're a potential good friend that can be their for you in rough times.
Some people go into relationships without much planning, and end up losing some gain financially because they can't satisfy the relationship and their work needs. But they might end up becoming good friends instead of lovers if they know they can't be together without bringing down each other financially, whether unintentional or not.
If they're a genuinely toxic person who only wants your money and time, and not you, then it would be better to tell them upfront (if you can do so safely) that this relationship is not working out.
Like how for work, when you want to leave in good standing, you put in a two week notice of your leave, so they can try and find another person to replace you with before you leave. This other person, if mature enough, will understand your decision and might feel the same way about splitting up.
But if you both know your good with finances independently, you might consider becoming good friends to help each other out in rough times, instead of burning all ties with them. Unless they aren't interested in helping you, are toxic in behavior, or just don't want to be around you.

•Can make you come across as sexist•
I am a believer that most people aren’t racist, sexist, etc... but people often don’t think of the context, don’t realize how *because* of the particular dynamic (a white person lecturing a black person, a man over explaining to a woman, for example) it can appear that you’re being bigoted.
I also know from personal experience that most of the time when someone has “no filter” it’s sometimes because they genuinely don’t understand that what they’re saying could be harmful.
I spent months literally being trained on how to act socially by a close mentor, and so many things I’d never even imagine could be considered taboo, or mean, or taken personally, I realized I’d been saying.

The issue for me is not denouncing the comments in itself, it's creating a "sexist" narrative that may or may not be present. E.g saying "it's not a big deal" doesn't suddenly become "deeply sexist" as soon as a man says it to a woman as opposed to saying it to another man. Sometimes people might also say that with good intentions in order to try and quell someone's anxiety. If you can tell someone's already anxious, the worst thing you could do would be to do the opposite and instead play something up into a big deal.
There's also the fact that women say their share of things to men that they probably shouldn't, but no one patronises them and tells them how they should behave as women, and if they tried to, they'd probably end up being shamed in videos like these.
