Over the last 16 months or so I've watched hundreds of Ren reactions. And many of those that I like best are when the reactors are themselves musicians, and share how Ren has inspired their own creativity or otherwise motivated them in their own music. Thanks for your continued reactions, and especially for your reactions to Ren and his circle of friends. And looking forward to more of your own work.
Thanks Thomas! Appreciate the words and you being here. Putting some things together and planning to start releasing some of my own stuff by the end of the month/ start of June. Nice one!
Oh and that green wheelbarrow in the background... that's Ren's equipment transportation device... No expense spared in those days. 😎 Sam is highly influenced by his hero Justin Bieber, who incidentally he has recently opened for and played alongside. Also regarding Ren's vocal prowess, check out his interview with Chris Liepe who is a great vocal coach.
Ren spoke of being bedridden at the start of a new year. He’d taken ill at the worst possible time and thought he’d missed his chance. But, he admitted, he didn’t know anything but music. For many musicians, having another talent they can fall back on, is a curse & a blessing because they can set music aside “for a bit” to put food on the table. The curse is, that first love never leaves and eventually they start to play the dreaded “what if” game-a futile exercise with no winner.
I truly enjoy Sam and Ren's talent and singing voices. I have noticed that Ren is not afraid to take some risks with his creative outlet. After all, you don't know if it will work unless you give it a try. I also see how Ren is immersed and feeling the music in every performance. I do wonder if some of his movement when performing is a combination of him feeling the music and also feeling his pain. I've been living with chronic pain since 2009 and it hurts more to stand in one spot. I need to move or be walking or holding onto something if I have to stand in one spot. I don't know if that's the case with Ren, it's just my observation. I'm sure he would still be feeling it and moving even if he wasn't in pain but it seems more animated at times. I just found your channel and appreciate your reactions. Sending love from Chicago and subbing!
Lol, I think of that Marty McFly moment as well when I watch this. I always say in my head, "He's going into orbit now; connecting with the aliens." I find your reflections about the nuances of performing interesting.
Break It Down Brother! Great work! I’ve watched a lot of reactions to this set, and your simple yet detailed, and very respectful commentary on Ren raising the emotional bar of the performance was spot on, imo. Really made an impression. Great Vibes!
I've been hoping you'd see this one as I was so curious how you'd react to Ren's as-you-so-aptly-put-it Marty McFly moment. It always makes me smile because it's so obvious Ren's in the zone, but it comes to my ear a bit dissonant. I love the performance though, and I stay on the journey. Having heard Ren utilize dissonance purposefully in other tracks helps as well. I've learned to trust Ren in that sense, but I'm not a musician. I think it's part of why I enjoy your reactions so much. You listen both lyrically and sonically. Thanks for your channel!
Oh my goodness! I didn't realize that you hadn't done this yet. Ren and Sam 🤩 This same day they did "Walking on the Moon/Falling/ No Diggity". I really like Sam, but I get what you're saying. I think Ren just surrenders to the music, and Sam, at this point, was still finding a personal style, and voice. And then Ren just goes off into ADHD guitar effects, and Sam gently pulls him back.
I think this was posted by a fan watching, not filmed by the usual guys Ren has. There are several videos of them busking filmed this way, because they are so good together. People are just sharing. 🥰 Like your take as always, Izzy.
Interesting assessment of Sam’s voice. It has definitely matured since this performance, and you can hear the worldliness coming through now. He relies on fewer falsetto gambits to wow the crowd and it feels like he’s singing more from the heart. Ultimately, he has a more pop friendly voice than Ren, and that’s always going to have them appealing to a slightly different audience. Loved the reaction man, cheers!
Great reaction! Sam is a huge fan of Justin Bieber (and got to open for him once). He is improving and maturing, although I think Ren is a more "natural" musician. My favorite songs of Sam's are Loose It All and Time Will Fly.
Great reaction video as always! Sam's music is amazing, most of his songs are ballads and very emotional, His song - Hero -gets to me! As we get older we all start to fear the court of public oppinion. Izzy from your songs you have on UA-cam i can see that you have talent! Choose one of your songs you have written do an acoustic version, don't try to make it perfect, It feels more real if it just comes from the heart. And upload it to your channel. Part of Ren's appeal is his how real he is no auto-tune etc.... Ren leaves mistakes in his songs and videos. Thanks
Thanks Barzo! And thanks for the encouragement! I'm putting some plans together and should start putting some things out my the end of the month/start of June. So if I don't, feel free to pull me up on it. Nice one!
For simplicity you need to take a look/listen to Ren busking with TBP where he sings ‘Chalk Outlines’ in the set interval. The crowd become so silent - the song is simply gorgeous.
This is such an amazing vocal performance by both of them. Definitely check out Sam, especially his live version of Hero, which was performed only a couple of weeks after his father took his own life. Another great reaction Izzy 💜💜
Love you noticed the two little boys! And as so often I'm impressed with the synergy of Ren and the musicians he plays with. That's what you meant I suppose talking about playing together with others. The miracle when this synergy happens. Thanks for your reaction!! It always adds something ❤🙏
I totally get what you are saying, Sam has so much control of his voice, particularly the falsetto that it can seem a little too controlled. I think he has more of that freedom with his original songs! I highly recommend “ Lose It All” live version, it is really lovely! I love Ren’s throw caution to the wind style especially when he is live! Thanks for your insight!❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻
Sam has a great falsetto and runs. Similar to Justin Timberlake R&B style.Ren has this unique quality and texture to his voice with a presence that demands your attention. His charisma as a performer is rare., you cant teach.that.Ren jas said that music is the closest thing to god for him.Ren's has layers and a 3+ octave range. When you add all that up he is Ren.
Yeah, I guess charisma is something you can't teach. It's interesting to thing about. I guess, being present in the moment and fully engaged in what you are doing has something to do with it. Probably why they call it stage presence. And I guess that leads to some kind of union, and that could be described as God. It's interesting. Thanks Sigally!
Yes, Sam was still pretty young then. Ren has such a collaborative mind; he knows when to stay behind and when it's time to go off on a Ren tangent. He actually seems more carefulbto be very supportive when with Sam than when with TBP because I guess the guys were older and just accustomed to Ren's adhd jaunts when busking.
REN is more theatrical for sure Sam has gotten better I think His voice has matured some I’m sure since this Sam has great range You do need to check out more Check out blind eyed as well
sam's improved so much in the years since -- his new stuff will punch you in the face with feels lol highly recommend "someone else" "numb" "lose it all" as well as "follow suit" love them both so much. ren is in a league of his own, imo. tho it's fair to point out ren is about seven years older than sam. sometime you really need to check out the version of "blind eyed ft. angry car park attendant" for a very off-the-cuff performance (plus it's just fun) great reaction, new sub :)
Sam changed his voice quite a lot if you listen to his recent work. Early on before he was signed relied heavily on hitting the high notes. He's obviously had some vocal training and it's way more emotional now. I prefer the newer Sam. Not saying old Sam was bad at all.
I agree, Sam has a beautiful voice but sometimes plays it too save, and still does. But Ren plays a lot with his voice and it has so much character, sometimes the result is less then optimal but so much fun and pays off, because it is interesting and he can develop his talent. Although I don't know much about guitar playing, his playing at the end of this video is bit off for me at times but he is unafraid to try things and it pays of because one of his hallmark is how often he does things so different from others.
I know Sam's voice is incredible, but for me personally, I feel like Ren's voice has so much more character & diversity. Honestly, a number of artists sound similar to Sam, but Ren's voice is very singular, even if not technically as good or polished or something. I would choose to listen to Ren's vocals over Sam's any day. To what you said, yes, too perfect to a point that any artist that has that range just sounds the same. Great voice, I can obviously hear that, but honestly that vocal style is boring to me. What Ren does carries so much more than that, and he's a very good singer, too.
Sam is good and has talent, However Ren's voice is the one that huts the soul, I have seen live concerts since Rolling Stones were top. And living in SF Bay area the venues were vast and divers. And I went to concerts very often all through 60s & 70s hundreds without exaggeration. Ren is different and unique. I have never been this enamored by a artist like Ren and his music/messages.. I liked I shot the sheriff/road to Zion hip hop. This I am pretty sure Ren was dealing with all his illness all during his Big Push days !!
@@IzzyIzenstain OMG I have seen everybody, But my favorite concerts were Frampton Comes Alive was a great concert, I have seen eagles like 4 times, Rolling Stones, Seen Carlos Santana at a very intimate setting on the Russian River , Bad Co, and even John Denver put on a great show. Back in 70s Concerts usually had at least 4 bands. " example" Eagles, Heart, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Foreigner. this was a day on the green at Oakland Coliseum and I went to many many of these..
To me Sam just seems to have that sort of buttery smooth voice that’s well suited for RnB or pop. Both genres that I don’t really listen to at all. But then 95% of the time I listen to Japanese metalcore bands yet I love Ren 😂 Still. Sam’s voice is just kinda boring to me. Ren simply has more character. It’s raw and unpredictable.
Hey Izzy! Sam’s a huge fan of Bieber. Honestly, Sam really fed off of Ren’s charisma. Ren runs around like an ADHD monkey! Sam tends toward low self-esteem and depression. I don’t mean any of that in a hateful way. I have some of the same issues (being chronically ill doesn’t help). I think Sam struggles without Ren around. I feel bad for him. He’s doing poorly recently. His Dad died. He has opened for Bieber before. That’s all I know. Cool reaction!😉❤️✌️
I think that there is a short on Sam’s channel beginning with him at 15 . The still says “ 20 years old”. ( ua-cam.com/users/shortsiiscG43JbrM?si=98Al90K7yMLmKIld) I think that Sam has a lot of range but he’s still pretty young and I think that he’s finding his footing , especially since I *think* he’s living in LA. I’m sure you’ve been told the story of how Ren met Sam and I think that Ren is further burdened by an overly empathetic nature . As we know, Ren has been through some serious shit and it’s not only reflected in his lyrics but it also pushes it’s way out through his voice. He’s a perfectionist and at the same time, having spent so much time down because of illness, he’s more likely to push himself out of his comfort zone ( Sick Boi was a culminating body of work that was very much rap/ hip hop influenced but he still snuck in some of his own vocals in it as well. He’s also quite a stubborn lad 😂who has an enormous love of and for music. Check out Jessica ft Orlean. It was done in RENs Room ( There’s a YT channel as well) when he couldn’t even go out but you will see from the set up that he wasn’t about to let that stop him.
Earned It is the artist known as The Weekend. You should maybe check some of his work to see if you can find any style comparisons to what you see in Sam
Awesome reaction as usual. I really appreciate your insights and knowledge. I'd love to hear your reaction to Animal Flow, but the luve avoustic version. Just Ren, a classical guitar on a bus. I prefer it to the official version.
I was wondering about Ren & his distance from the mic for his back up vocals. Sometimes he does and sometimes he doesn’t. Not sure why or whether there’s a method to it.
It comes down to choice/feel. He can really belt out those backing vocals from a distance and that also creates more space in the sound being further from the mic. But also, if he was closer to the mic singing like that the volume would be over powering to the level of the lead vocal (in this case, Sam). He could sing closer, but would have to adjust the volume he sings at which would also adjust the sound and feel of what he produces.
I agree with others that Lose It All (live) and Hero (live from Hammersmith Apollo) are good choices to hear current Sam. I follow his IG, and a number of apparently popular singers who have influenced him have commented there in the past year or so. They aren't in my usual wheelhouse, and I've forgotten their names (sorry). Just saying Beiber isn't his only influence lol.
I very quickly checked out some of Sam's solo stuff. It's just not for me. Kind of the same stuff that a lot of artists are putting out & some of it clearly has pitch correction/autotune type stuff going on (when he clearly doesn't need it). Ren's bringing so much that almost no other artists are doing now and haven't for a long time.
Sam‘s voice has some pretty good range. You’re a tough critic, man. lol! What do you consider great range? 😅 You gotta love the two little kids, sitting in the front by the guitar case open for tips ! I love that image. That’s very interesting to me. What you said about Ren compared to Sam because well I mean, we all love Ren his once in a generational talent. I think if you flew in from another planet and you do nothing about them and it was strictly based on their vocal ability. I would think that you would have to say that Sam was a slightly better singer. Of course there’s preference and so many things that go into singing and your voice, It’s very hard to say which one of them is a better talented singer because they’re both A+ to me, but would I go back to the beginning will not really the beginning but “ Hi Ren” it’s such a unique song but the word part at the end before the poetry where he sings for like 20 seconds you’re like mesmerized by his voices after seven basically talking in different voices or slightly singing event I saw chalk 🎉outlines, and I noticed not only have amazing his voices, but how he captures so much emotion in his voice and with his expressions visually while he’s singing, and I’m not a vocalist or musician I just love music and different kinds of music and Tamee from what I know about the art of singing, he is willing to risk having perfect pitch and tone in order to emote and I would think in the Mind of a vocalist it’s engraved in your head from the very beginning that you have to be on point with hitting the notes and timing perfectly. With him sometimes I feel like he’s off key, but it sounds so good that in my mind he’s doing it on purpose where when I reflect on it he’s probably not really doing it on purpose, but getting the emotion across is his top priority and then the other things come secondary. Keep in mind that Sam is several years youngerthan Ren It’s hard to tell because Ren looks like a baby. It’s interesting to hear Red talk about it because he said when he turned the corner one day on his way home from busking he heard the voice of an angel away you go to thinking about female or at least I did and he was referring to Sam who at the time was 13 or 14. he couldn’t believe what he was hearing and he could tell he was a little bit nervous and he told him an amplifier will make all the difference! So he lent Sam his amp and he said that he was right in the street was packed within a matter of minutes so he started playing guitar and doing back up vocals. he said that Sam is an angel and he tributes his music career or his start of musical success to his collaborating with Sam. A couple of their videos went viral that somebody had posted.
IMO Sam's voice is a bit to plain and emotionless... Yeah he has an unbelievable range and he's mostly quite accurate in pitching. BUT its toneless and lacking in expression. I find Ren extra expressive, maybe sometimes even going a bit far with several different voices in a song. Theres several examples of Ren's vocal Colour s smashing through In Stuf with Sam and also with the big push.... Check out The Big Push's version of "Praise You" (fat boy slim) Rens part just blows the rest out of the water. Then also the Ren and Sam Tomkins Track about DUI drink and drugs.... cant remember what that was called... but again when ren starts singing/rapping something magical happens
I can see the JT comparison. I know almost nothing of JB though. I feel ya on the boy bands. Although perhaps there was the odd good song produced by one or 2 of them.
Sam's ok but Ren's next level! And I'm just talking vocals here. If we include the seemingly endless list of Ren's other incredible talents. it's not even a contest! Sam's a bit of a one trick pony for me. He does that one trick reasonably well but that's all he does, over and over and over again... He doesn't understand vocal light and shade and appears to mimic emotion, rather than really feel it. He's also frequently flat or off-key. When he gets it right, he's good but I find myself becoming bored with it, quite quickly. It lacks real soul, or personality, or something... In contrast, Ren's never boring! You'll find a Sam, or two, on every tv talent show going. You won't find a Ren there! Ren's a unique talent! A musical genius! A once in a generation talent! :)
Sam has definitely gotten better, but few have the ability to emote the way Ren does. Ren sings from his entire body and soul.

"Ren's equipment transportation device" 🤣 yeah, the Chris Liepe interview's great!
Ren is just a master of purposely singing imperfectly which adds so much more to his vocals.
Ren spoke of being bedridden at the start of a new year. He’d taken ill at the worst possible time and thought he’d missed his chance. But, he admitted, he didn’t know anything but music.

Sam Tompkins - "Lose it all (live)" is fantastic, or "Hero (live at Hammersmith)"
Loss of confidence is a brutal landscape of thirst and hunger. I empathise.
At 12:00 ... to have such total quiet while performing on the street is unexpected!!!

Think you’re being fair about Sam’s ‘feel’. Think that’s why Ren’s “climb down” is so beautiful and full of soul.

But then 95% of the time I listen to Japanese metalcore bands yet I love Ren 😂 Still. Sam’s voice is just kinda boring to me. Ren simply has more character. It’s raw and unpredictable.
I love his song Numb
The end sounded like John Frusciante licks. Wonder if he was listening to a lot of RHCP at the time
I think i've heard Ren say it was listening to John that made him pick up the guitar in the first place.
@@YorkshireRipplerhe mentions John Frusciante in his track Power ☺️
great job brother!
Thanks Rick!
Thanks Abby! Sending ya good vibrations!
I think that there is a short on Sam’s channel beginning with him at 15 . The still says “ 20 years old”. ( ua-cam.com/users/shortsiiscG43JbrM?si=98Al90K7yMLmKIld)
I think that Sam has a lot of range but he’s still pretty young and I think that he’s finding his footing , especially since I *think* he’s living in LA.
I'll check those out! Thanks!
Sams's latest drop is Numb, he also has Time Will Fly, Lose It All, Hero Live from the Hammersmith Apollo, and Phones In Heaven.
Gonna check out a recent one soon!
Justin Timberlake I'd say as a similar type of voice to sam
❤❤❤
Earned It is the artist known as The Weekend. You should maybe check some of his work to see if you can find any style comparisons to what you see in Sam
Thanks Darline. I'll look into that.
Awesome reaction as usual. I really appreciate your insights and knowledge. I'd love to hear your reaction to Animal Flow, but the luve avoustic version. Just Ren, a classical guitar on a bus. I prefer it to the official version.
Thanks! Will hopefully get to that soon!
@IzzyIzenstain sorry about the terrible typos in my message. Definitely the live version.
@@LaurindaTimmins no problem! I understood.

Sam…loves Bieber, appeared on one of his lives.
Check out Sam Tomkins - Time Will Fly. He has a lot of other great tracks, but this is one of my favorites
Thanks Ryan
I very quickly checked out some of Sam's solo stuff. It's just not for me. Kind of the same stuff that a lot of artists are putting out & some of it clearly has pitch correction/autotune type stuff going on (when he clearly doesn't need it). Ren's bringing so much that almost no other artists are doing now and haven't for a long time.
Yeah, that pitch correction stuff baffles me. Kills things dead, doesn't it.
Check out Sam "Hero - Live at Hammersmith"
Sam‘s voice has some pretty good range. You’re a tough critic, man. lol! What do you consider great range? 😅
You gotta love the two little kids, sitting in the front by the guitar case open for tips ! Of course there’s preference and so many things that go into singing and your voice,
It’s very hard to say which one of them is a better talented singer because they’re both A+ to me, but would I go back to the beginning will not really the beginning but “ Hi Ren” it’s such a unique song but the word part at the end before the poetry where he sings for like 20 seconds you’re like mesmerized by his voices after seven basically talking in different voices or slightly singing event I saw chalk 🎉outlines, and I noticed not only have amazing his voices, but how he captures so much emotion in his voice and with his expressions visually while he’s singing, and I’m not a vocalist or musician I just love music and different kinds of music and Tamee from what I know about the art of singing, he is willing to risk having perfect pitch and tone in order to emote and I would think in the Mind of a vocalist it’s engraved in your head from the very beginning that you have to be on point with hitting the notes and timing perfectly.
Sam's vocals are heavily influenced by R&B singers like Stevie Wonder, Eddie Kendricks and Philip Bailey
Sam is in his mid 20s now. 5yrs ago he was a kid, so...
Not filmed by a random. Sound quality is too good for that. Camera man fixed the audio.
Looking forward to that Praise You one. I should get to it, in a couple of weeks. I'll find out that Ren and Sam one too. Nice one!
Sam reminds me of Justin Timberlake, maybe Justin Beibers. Not a fan of either of them. Boy bands back in the day annoyed me. 😂
Lot's of fair points there, I think.
I think ren and Romain have kinda influenced you ..
Is that accurate?
Ahh you just said inspired ✨✌🏼🎶
Added fuel to my fire for sure. Putting some plans together and hopefully will begin to put some things out by the end of the month/ start of June.
Awe good for you!
