I was just there two nights ago. Yooper lookim No. It took over an hour to drive the 18 miles back. Really rough. Huge waves and really cold. But the rock hunt was really beautiful there. I was hunting by flashlight. Whole new experience. Love all you videos.
It was good to see Crisp's Point Light. I helped restore that lighthouse many years ago. I restored most of the brass at the top and I donated rose bushes native to that area. Pam & I are going to Minnesota next week staying in Marquette Sunday night. Too bad we couldn't have collaborated at Crisp's Point. My cabin is 2 miles as the crow flys away. Nancy didn't do a very good job of being retired. The school called her and asked her to come back to help with the online students. She said yes. She's working part time from home and told the school that she had some trips planned. Since she's working online she can do a lot of stuff from anywhere. Still not the same as being completely carefree.
Another beautiful video. Great to have a day like that in October on the big lake. I love to drive out to Crisp even though I’ve never found an agate there. The Crisp Point Historical Society has done a great job restoring the place. They’re worthy of support!
It's a really nice place and well taken care of. This was filmed on the last day of September, but it was beautiful either way. I really like hunting the beach there.
What a fun trip! Liked Nancy’s bigger rock first off and the agate “whoopty loops” at the end! I found a fossil one like what you found at our cabin…strange looking but cool! Thx for the trip!
It took quite a few tries to get the shot where I flew a semicircle around the lighthouse. I don't get to circle something like that often, so it was a fun challenge.
King Tutankhamun tomb came to my mind when you showed us the fossil, miniature style And the rock you showed just past 20:00 looked a piece of Candy Corn
Great video you two! Really made me want to find an agate or three. Just watched your Lake Michigan hunt and had to laugh. One's technique has to totally change when hunting through the smaller rocks. You have to get down close and personal. Sorry I missed the writing assignment. Life has been a bit extra busy with the extended warm weather. Enjoy!
Amazing! All those agates and other rocks were really pretty. The agate at 10:44 had some decent bands. My favorites though were the carnelian agates. What a spectacular day!😍🥰😇👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😍🥰😇👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Oh, I love that place!!! And the drive too. The water is down from when I was there last. Hopefully, you stayed and looked for Yooperlites. That’s where I learned about Yooperlites. A lady asked if I was there to look for Yooperlites and I said we call them northern lights. She said no there rocks that glow. I was hooked.
We had to drive a couple hours to our hotel and we hadn't eaten, so no Yooperlite hunting for us. The light was in the Jeep, just not with me on the beach.
Wow beautiful video....lovely day... wonderful company. Nice quality on all those bright amazing outdoor images. Thank you Nancy and Rob... your effort is appreciated!! (Your water is so clear)
HI Rob! Not all carnelian (a type of agate) has obvious banding. Just a thought - small pieces of carnelian may have broken off in between bands of a larger banded piece and therefore, would not show banding. So I think some of those pieces you and Nancy found may have been carnelian. Have fun rockhounding, and take care.
Thanks, Chris. I realize that carnelians are not necessarily banded. I thought I referred to some of the small rocks in this video as carnelians. Maybe I didn't. We made a video the next day too, and I know I called them carnelians there. I think your idea of some of the very small rocks being from parts between the bands makes a lot of sense.
That was a new shot for me. I was on the side of the road while Nancy drove by the same spot twice. I forgot to record sound, so the sound was recorded later of a random car driving by. It all came together really nicely. I love it when a plan comes together!
Really enjoy watching your videos. I like how raw your agates hunting are - it really showcase how difficult it can be to look for agates (sometimes). I have watched other videos by other UA-camrs and I feel like in almost every single one of their videos - they look down and there's an agate. It gets discouraging watching those videos, and then rock hunting and not finding anything. I know it takes time and tons of hours of hunting to-get-to that point where agates become easily spotted, but I like how most of your videos are hit/miss - it feels genuine. Thanks for sharing... you're a great teacher.
Even my videos are pretty fake. Most of my beach hunts last for between three and six hours. I only film what I think is the most interesting part and then edit that down even further to a ten to twenty minute video.

I really like green stripey rocks and I'm glad you kept that one. I sure thought I saw banding in Nancy's agate. We'll need to know "the rest of the story" someday. The vegetation around the lake is so different from what I'm used to, especially the lichen growing on sand. It's almost always growing on rocks here. As always, the drone footage is fantastic. Thank you for letting us join you on a very nice adventure.
I tried to get a good picture of Nancy's rock, but it looks better in the video. I see the band she's talking about, but I'm still not convinced that it's an agate.
I don't think so. I have never found one up there. Most Petoskeys are below a line from about Rogers City (on Lake Huron) to about Harbor Springs (on Lake Michigan).
a carnelian, though many now refer to it as the red color is actually the color between the bands, in some agates the banding is so large that a solid piece of color is what you have left, so technically a carnelian is not an agate but only part of one geologically, in gemology it's still called and agate, but still really cool
Yes, I know that different people define agates different ways. I don't have a strong opinion on which definition is correct. I consider Montana agates to be agates, although most don't have bands. On the beach, I often look for bands to determine if it's an agate though. But carnelians count as agates to me. I'm pretty wishy washy about the whole thing.
@@MichiganRocks yes, I just thought it interesting considering the no bands statement, it is considered an agate by most me included, it's just so weird how everything sort of morphs like that using court of public opinion and with this I kind of agree, I mean if we can all agree why can't they, by they I mean those much more educated then me
@@MichiganRocks lol, not in the vehicle we were in! We had our Expedition and wished we had drove something a little smaller with as narrow as the road was. But we made it just fine.
Loved the video and lots of cool rocks you found! I'm heading there in the spring so I'll be sure to visit this beach while I'm there. The sound of the waves is so soothing and the scenery is absolutely beautiful! Thanks for the video!
Good finds! That yellow and white quartz looked like a piece of candy corn(11:36). you have pretty colors. Here is western Wisconsin we don't have any pretty red from the maples. It was a really hot summer and It was 85 again today...so yeah, the leaves just sort of turned yellow and dried up.
The next day up there it was 79 degrees. It was so warm that the flies came out. The next two nights we were able to sit outside until 10 or 11 at night at my sister's house in Marquette. Unusually warm for this time of year.
I appreciate your feedback, but this something I've spent some time thinking about already and have decided not to do. I spend a bunch of time doing slideshows for the end of my Rocks in a Box videos and those parts of the videos do not do well at all. There's a huge drop off in views. I don't really want to do the same thing in my beach videos. Sorry.
All along I thought you were using a drone for footage. At 3:50 I kept expecting you to appear in the shot with Nancy, but you didn't, so now I think you must just have superhero flying powers. ;)
It doesn't fit in nicely there, doesn't it. Vermillion Point is just down the beach. I walked from Vermillion close enough to see the lighthouse once. There was a life saving station at Vermillion where guys lived and just waited for a ship to go down so they could go out and rescue people. It makes you wonder how effective the lighthouse was or how treacherous the waters were there.
Last time I did a video here, I got a lot of questions about the condition of the road. It was really good when we were there last week. I showed me driving through a puddle just before the lighthouse, and that was the worst spot. I think it had just been graded.
That's a nice spot with lots of rocky treasure - and I always love the wave-kissed glass, so pretty. Wonder how long it's been swishing around? Thanks for the visit.
Love it! I'm gonna try to get up there one more time at least before it's too cold. Will you guys do any travel outside of Michigan now that you have lots of free time?
My wife’s stepfather helped build that bridge. I would say that trip really paid off. You guys found a lot of neat stuff. I really like those multicolored rocks that seem to be of a quartz nature. Cool shot from the drone lifting off ! Last week when we went to the beach the water was crystal clear and unusually calm. It was a fantastic day. I found some of the largest pieces of quartz ever, south side of Manistee, Mi.
It was worth the drive for sure. We had a really good time. That's cool that you know someone who worked on the bridge. That's fun to drive over every time.
I wonder why some people just like looking at rocks. I've always enjoyed it but most of the people I know think I'm nuts. And I certainly enjoy watching you and Nancy looking at rocks. Thanks for the beautiful trip up to the UP. P. S. You kept that fossil, right?
Nancy actually went back to work part time. She's a retirement failure, I guess. It's nice that she's still able to squeeze in some time to go to the beach with me.
That depends on who you talk to. Some people define an agate as having bands. Other people don't. I tend to fall on the side that you do. I think Montana agate is a legitimate agate, and many of those don't have bands. Then again, they're often called "Montana moss agates".
I tried to take some good pictures of it, but neither Nancy nor I liked the way they turned out. It looked better in the video. I'm still not convinced that it's an agate, but I do see the banding she was talking about.
We're both fluent in that language. We communicate well that way. I really like that we can both give each other a hard time and no one gets hurt feelings.
Sorry, I don't live in Canada, so I don't know anything about ordering agates there. You could ask Meiner. He's another UA-cam guy. His channel is just "MeMiner. He lives in Canada.
I would like to know. What kind of shoes you have on? I tried walking in sandals, won't do that again. Every small stone in the lake got trapped in them.
I wear Muck Boot garden shoes. They're great for around the yard, and okay as water shoes. They're not really made to be water shoes. The rocks and sand can't get in around the bottom, but stuff still gets in at that the top, especially in rough water. The sand rubs my feet slightly raw around the top of the shoes if I'm out for a couple days in a row. They're not bad, but I can't really fully recommend them as water shoes. Nancy likes her new shoes. They're made by Columbia and are in my Amazon storefront. Her feet would hurt with cheap water shoes. Her new ones look like tennis shoes and have the same sort of soles. Her feet don't hurt anymore.
@@MichiganRocks If you do find good water shoes that keep rocks and sand out, please let us know. That is the hardest part of searching in the water, for me - walking comfortably without having to dump pebbles out of my shoes, or having them sift in through sandals.
@@virginiaphillips3946 I've been looking at scuba diving boots. I ordered a pair, but they had very thin soles. If I could find a pair with good soles that went up my ankle some, I'd buy them.
No, we stayed in the Soo that night and then went to my sister's house in Marquette for a couple days. No, the Soo was not the best place to stay for that trip, but we had a free room.

I tried to get a good picture of Nancy's rock, but it looks better in the video. I see the band she's talking about, but I'm still not convinced that it's an agate.
@@MichiganRocks 🤔
Beautiful rocks this trip!
I thought so!
How cool that you both get to enjoy the rock adventure
Yes, it's better when Nancy comes along.
Nice beach! Rocky just great way I like them. Agate hunting was fun. The little ones were some of the best.
I don't expect to find big ones, and the little ones still excite me. I consider that hunt a big success.
Any Petoskys on Lake Superior? I love it up there. Thanks for taking us along.
@@MichiganRocks yes, I just thought it interesting considering the no bands statement, it is considered an agate by most me included, it's just so weird how everything sort of morphs like that using court of public opinion and with this I kind of agree, I mean if we can all agree why can't they, by they I mean those much more educated then me
We were there just last weekend! A lot of yellow rocks! Its a drive back in there but worth it!
The drive is half the fun, isn't it?
@@MichiganRocks lol, not in the vehicle we were in! We had our Expedition and wished we had drove something a little smaller with as narrow as the road was. But we made it just fine.
@@mandyshepard2322 It was fun in a Jeep.
Loved the video and lots of cool rocks you found! I'm heading there in the spring so I'll be sure to visit this beach while I'm there. The sound of the waves is so soothing and the scenery is absolutely beautiful! Thanks for the video!
You're welcome. Good luck when you visit in the spring.
@@MichiganRocks thanks! Will be my first time in the UP but I'll keep watching your vids! Hopefully I'll have some good finds like you guys did!
@@ladyofjazz448 Good luck!
Great finds!! A fun video to end my day with 😁👍
I'm glad you liked it, Glenn!
WOW looks like 🚙🛤️PERFECT SPOT! Gorgeous place to be together.....💏
It's nice to be out with Nancy. I enjoy her company, even if she makes fun of me for being blind.
Que lindo amigo. Beautful video my friend.
Thanks, Alé!
Great finds. Rob can you start adding in a pic or something at the end so we all can see what you choose to bring home???
I appreciate your feedback, but this something I've spent some time thinking about already and have decided not to do. I spend a bunch of time doing slideshows for the end of my Rocks in a Box videos and those parts of the videos do not do well at all. There's a huge drop off in views. I don't really want to do the same thing in my beach videos. Sorry.
Nice, relaxing video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
All along I thought you were using a drone for footage. At 3:50 I kept expecting you to appear in the shot with Nancy, but you didn't, so now I think you must just have superhero flying powers. ;)
Yes, that's true. I can fly.
Como sempre,excelente vídeo
A very pretty place . The lighthouse looks like it was built at that place for aesthetic reasons
@@MichiganRocks that would make it seem more of a landmark than practical
Looked like a walkin rockin good time👍👍
And it was!
Sweet ROCKHOUNDING ending together💏✌️💖⭐⭐⭐⭐🎬📹
That's a fun road to drive.
"Wave kissed glass", that's a really nice name for it.
you were right Nancy, that's an agate 🤣
Sure, take her side! I don't think anyone has agreed with me yet, so you're in good company.
Half of your drops would go in my bucket!
I'm trying not to bring home more than I can tumble.
Love it! I'm gonna try to get up there one more time at least before it's too cold. Will you guys do any travel outside of Michigan now that you have lots of free time?
We're planning to visit my sister's place in Florida. I don't think there will be any rock hunting along the way, but we'll see.
I did keep the fossil. That was a weird one.
Thanks
At 11:12ish, yes, I see the banding!
Are you talking about Nancy's rock or my little, itsy bitsy carnelian?
@@MichiganRocks Nancy’s rock.
@@RandomRangerRambles I saw it too, but I'm not convinced it's an agate. I could be wrong though.
Great vlog. Rob, are you and Nance enjoying retirement in that beautiful country, I never tire of looking at it...
Nancy actually went back to work part time. She's a retirement failure, I guess. It's nice that she's still able to squeeze in some time to go to the beach with me.
You can have an agate without banding. In other words not all agates have banding. Any rock that you can see light through it is an agate.
That depends on who you talk to. Some people define an agate as having bands. Other people don't. I tend to fall on the side that you do. I think Montana agate is a legitimate agate, and many of those don't have bands. Then again, they're often called "Montana moss agates".
Did that stream have any rocks?
If it did, they were safe from me. That's as far as I went.
i saw the bands Nancy!
I see them too. I'm not sure they're agate bands, but there are definitely bands.
The fossil is a piece of the crown of coral☺️, I have tons in SE LK MI.💙💜
Which fossil? Can you give me a timestamp?
Haha I agree with Nancy, I bet that's an agate. I see banding!
I tried to take some good pictures of it, but neither Nancy nor I liked the way they turned out. It looked better in the video. I'm still not convinced that it's an agate, but I do see the banding she was talking about.
Nancy's second language must be "sarcanese." Lol!
We're both fluent in that language. We communicate well that way. I really like that we can both give each other a hard time and no one gets hurt feelings.
Beautiful day. How long will you be able to rock hunt before your feet freeze off?
I have waders, so it will be awhile.
👍
Great video. Thanks for taking us along. Can you suggest a Canadian a good place to order agates? 👍🇨🇦
Sorry, I don't live in Canada, so I don't know anything about ordering agates there. You could ask Meiner. He's another UA-cam guy. His channel is just "MeMiner. He lives in Canada.
@@MichiganRocks Thanks I’ll try that but I meant to order from the USA. Take care. 👍🇨🇦
Thanks. It sounds like I need what your wife has.
@@virginiaphillips3946 I've been looking at scuba diving boots. I ordered a pair, but they had very thin soles. If I could find a pair with good soles that went up my ankle some, I'd buy them.
Was that just a day trip? Quite a ride from Alpena.
No, we stayed in the Soo that night and then went to my sister's house in Marquette for a couple days. No, the Soo was not the best place to stay for that trip, but we had a free room.
how far are you from the U.P.? Do you find, after a day of picking and listening to the waves...that you've been hit with Nature's Valium? :D Lichen IS cool! That lil agate looks like candy corn. Best of Show, Agate Dept: Nancy. BOS fossel Dept....def Big Daddy.
We live in Alpena, which is two hours south of the bridge on Lake Huron. Our house isn't on the lake, but Alpena is. After a day of looking at rocks, I'm usually a little worn out, but very relaxed.
@@MichiganRocks AMEN to that! That's cool that you are that close!
