Nice rocks, Rob and Nancy, especially the Cladophora, which I really love. Haven't found any as nice as yours yet. This week we hounded up at Whitefish Point in a brisk gale. Thanks for sharing your rock hunting with us ALL. I really love the waters up there in Michigan. My husband is from up there so when ever we get a chance to go home I always bring something back with us..😆 🤣
You so casually pick up puddingstones right and left. I would have loved to find one like that last one your found this past weekend. We drove up to Sault Ste Marie and spent Friday at Drummond Island and Saturday at Grand Marais. Would love to find this beach you and Nancy are at! I found one tiny little piece of puddingstone but my husband found a nice one for our yard. I believe that red stone you picked up before finding the last puddingstone may be jaspilite or possibly banded rhyolite. We found so many pieces of beautiful granite and basalt with feldspar. I've done beading for decades and have never really liked unakite beads. But seeing it on the beach at Grand Marais, it practically glows and is so pretty. Thank you for another great video!
I agree that red rock might have been jaspelite, but it wasn't obvious. The very last red rock, that I called banded iron formation is definitely jaspelite. BIF and jaspelite are the same thing. Lake Superior unakite is much nicer looking than the unakite rough I see being sold at rock shops. It's like a completely different rock, and much nicer in my opinion. I don't care for the stuff I see being sold either.
It's not luck. I watch the weather pretty closely and try to get out on calm days. It's easier on Lake Huron because the winds tend to come out of the west more and I live near Lake Huron. The Lake Michigan and Lake Superior hunts are a little tricker to do on calm days.
Such a beautiful day to search for rocks and enjoy time with Nancy! The two pudding stones that you were hesitant about had me going "yes, take it home, take it home, take it home....and....he's leaving it behind." I love how calm the water was and how clear. Thank you for taking us along on another great adventure. Hi to Nancy! Have a great weekend!
that was a fun hunt. I didnt really appreciate how beautiful puddingstones were until i saw one in person. The little puddingstone i have is absolutley gorgeous
That is a beautiful beach for sure. The last coral fossil Nancy finds I do believe is called tube coral. I could be wrong. But thats what it looks like to me. You both found some really nice rocks. Thanks for sharing.
Yes the one at 10:39 . I had to go back and find the time stamp. I have some of that as well and wasn't sure what it was at first. Did some research and someone called it tube coral. I think its so cool looking.
I am a new subscriber as well as new to tumbling. My daughter and I have had a blast but until I started to watch your videos did I realize how wrong I was trying to tumble. I have been using a double barrel 6lbs tumbler but since watching you I have a Lot O tumbler on the way! Thank you so much for these videos as my daughter was losing faith in all the time spent with little amazing results!
I’m fact I am watching your how to video again. Those stones in this video are amazing! So awesome you took this amount of time to truly show how to tumble in the right way! My daughter and I have watched all your beach videos and she said why haven’t we been to the Great Lakes!!! I said well road trip imminent! We are in Central Illinois and not a lot of good rockhounding spots. Unless it’s fossils at Mazon Creek!
@@MichiganRocks we will def be heading up in short order!! I’m so glad you would field some questions when I get my Lot O tumbler. Because I will have them. Since watching you I have some ceramics on the way. I was so tumbling with 1/4 barrel sometimes because I was afraid to add I started rocks. Boy was I wrong! Thanks again for helping get me going in the right direction. The hunts you go on with your wife on the beach looks like pure serenity!!!!
You two and Sam should host a meet and greet on a public beach sometime in the future......and make a video with you three picking!!!!...... All the guests can fight over the rocks you throw back in the lake!!! It would be great and unforgettable 😜
I have thought about doing some sort of meet on a beach. The problem is that the public beaches tend to be pretty picked over. Do you think people would want to meet on a beach where they didn't find that much?
@@TheGreatLakesNomad I'll think about how to do that and where to do it. No promises though. Planning far enough ahead and having good weather is tricky.
Boy, what would I give to have water that calm to shell in!😊 Beautiful! Be careful not to fly that drone too high - you'll give your secret spot away! Lol
As always, great vid! How calm the water was!! Finally was able to take off and get up to the U.P. a few weeks ago. I didn’t get to do much preplanning though, rather impromptu. We made it to Vermilion point and white fish. Spent about 5 days. LOVED the privacy of Vermilion (thank you for the vids you’ve done on that place) my daughter and I had the entire stretch of beach to ourselves for almost the entire day!! I finally found myself more Omar’s than I knew what to do with. That was one of the rocks I went all the way there to find!! Thank you for that suggestion. Sadly, 5 days and not 1 single pudding stone😢 Before we left Tn, my husband bought me and daughter some UV flashlights to find some Yooperlites. We spent 3 hours at White Fish, searching for them and never found 1. I started thinking maybe there is a specific # of Lumens/UV it take to make them visible. Went back to the hotel and Googled it. It stated that you need at least 600 Lumens, ours was only 12🤪. I guess we should’ve checked that first. Wanted to go check out Vermilion at night because we read that the Northern Lights can be seen from there, but we were too nervous about driving that long dark sandy forested desolate trail, two lone females 1200 miles from home and no cell service, so we chose not to. Oh well, guess I’ll just have to go back again!! We did the underwater shipwreck tour, up in Munising before we left, that was awesome! Hope to get back up there again and find me a pudding stone!! Keep up the great vids. Makes me miss home!
Lake Huron is the best place to look for puddingstones. You won't find them in the area you were looking. Isn't Vermillion Point great? I love that place. Whitefish point has too many people for me. For Yooperlites, you need 365 nm light too. The cheap ones don't work well at all. Convoy lights with a filter are the way to go. Next time you go, check out the Pictured Rocks boat tour in Munising. That's really good.
@@MichiganRocks thank you very much for your reply and w/those helpful tips. Yes, Vermilion was perfection, and yes, there were way too many people at White Fish👎for my liking, although we were there so early, to do our business, we were the only ones there for about 2 good hours. There was so much urine in the parking area, I did end up vomiting, the stench was so overwhelming. And when we pulled in, there were two guys in a car so packed down with stuff that the front end was sitting higher than the back, and we observed them passing their lit something back and forth, and it was not weed! We got scared, because they looked right at us and saw us see them, although they weren’t even trying to hide it. They eventually just sped off. Weird. I will definitely start researching where some stretches of good rock beaches on Huron for the elusive pudding stones! Thank you for your info and videos!
Ahhhhhh ur killing me!...that one pudding stone was legit!!!...I don't find many if at all over here..I'd saw my toe off for that big nice one u put back!..but I know..I know..I've been watching you long enough, I know the story!
Wow, love the video! Will be up that way in about a month, hope I find some great rocks like you did. Will be on port sanilac and Lexington. I am thinking you're a bit further north however. Lol.
I love your videos and have learned so much. I am going to be in the eastern michigan area in a few weeks and am very interested in finding pudding stones. I have no idea where to go and i will have limited time, only one afternoon. I have searched and found many petosky stones and only two small pudding stones in westerm michigan around Traverse City. I was hoping there was a better location for pudding stones on lake huron that you might be willing to share or a general area. I was wanting to stay as far south as possible but will go up as far as i have to. Thanks so much. Love watching.
The farthest south on Lake Huron that I have hunted was at the Singing Bridge public access near Au Gres. The water was high this spring when I was there and I needed to wade through some water to get to the beach. You should watch the video so you know what you’re getting into before you go there. ua-cam.com/video/JF469dElD3E/v-deo.html
Looked like another beautiful day to find rock treasures. Looking at the water made me wonder if there are certain times of the year when the waters in the great lakes isn’t as clear or if it was just the day and the place you were hunting or I guess it might have been the time of day with reflection of light. The water looked pretty good but not as clear as other times. Having lived only around rivers like the Mississippi and Missouri which have VERY muddy waters, I really love how clear the water is up there.
The water is harder to see through in the winter when it's frozen. Also sometimes there will be a bug hatch and the little bug carcasses will be in the water. Otherwise, it's pretty clear most of the time. I can't say that I notice a seasonal difference. I thought it was very clear in this video too.
So sorry we didn't make it to Alpena on our trip...we had to cut our vacay after two weeks in the UP because there were absolutely zero vacancies in hotels or camping from petosky, Charlevoix, Leland, etc though we drove through all.. Had to drive all the way past Lansing to Jackson to find a place to stay. We found amazing coral fossils in door county, and lots of agate pebbles in Marquette... A few petosky stones where you recommended, and a teensy Leland blue at vans beach, that place was a joke! Three million people with sieves all scouring the beach. I did find my best agate at white fish point! All in all not a bad first rock hounding experience, and worth the 40+ hours of driving! We did visit the Bishop's statue, but the jam pot was closed on Mon, Tues, and Thurs. Thanks again for all your great suggestions, but I think we would have been better off waiting until spring to have a better chance of finding rocks! Never did find a pudding stone or unakite or Omar, but we met a dude that found a 200# yoo per lite, I should have taken a picture to show you! (Somewhere near copper harbor) but this dude snorkeled at night to find his yooper and agates....I won't ever be doing extreme rock hounding that's for sure!
That sounds like a pretty good trip. I had better luck on the other side of the river in Leland, and I was also there in the spring which probably helped. I wasn’t too impressed with Van’s Beach either because it had a lot of people there when I visited. I wonder if the Jam Pot is closed more due to Covid? I would think they’d either be open or not. I’m surprised that you never found any unakite. I find most of that in the eastern U.P., but also in Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.
Pretty dramatic, huh? Little Joseph and his parents are about a half hour from arriving at our house for the weekend. His grandparents and great grandparents are trying to stay awake for his arrival.
Beautiful day at the beach! Thanks for bringing me along with you, I don't get why I'm always edited out! No jk... What cool views of the water and drone shots. Loved those! Really cool rocks, and great variety for identifying rocks.
Hi there... How do we see so many variations of rocks on a beach like that? One would think that the stones would be all the same type reflecting the geography...
Oh, that's a tough one. I'd say it's between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. I have never hunted Ontario or Erie, so I can't comment on them. I hunt Lake Michigan less than the other two lakes and I have only hunted the area from Cross Village down to about Frankfort. I have not been super impressed, but that might just be because I have hunted very public beaches that have been over picked. I have hunted about the same amount of Lake Huron from about Cheboygan to Au Gres, but on much more remote beaches. I feel like I have found more variety on those beaches, but maybe just because they're hunted less. Generally, the types of rocks I find in Lakes Michigan and Huron are pretty similar. On Lake Superior, I have hunted from the Keweenaw Peninsula almost all the way to the Soo. Since I have covered so much area, I have also covered more varying geology. The eastern U.P. has some different rocks than what can be found in Keweenaw Peninsula. Lake Superior is also farther away from where I live than the other two lakes, which makes it a bit more exotic to me. Because of that, I think I'd pick Lake Superior as my favorite. Being able to find agates there is a bonus, but not being able to find Petoskey Stones and rarely finding puddingstones is a negative. Boy, that ended up being a long answer!
Love your videos. Why do you not seem to like the more unusual rocks? The one Nancy showed you in the beginning that had what appeared to be slag in it was so cool. I watch these videos to learn about rocks and minerals. I know it is not your job to teach me but there is more to michigan rocks than Petoskey, unikite and pudding stones, right? You have spoiled us but I want MORE!!! Respectfully, a fellow teacher from Missouri.
I'll admit that you listed three of my favorites. I do try to show more variety, but those three still grab my attention. I'll redouble my efforts to get out of my rut. Thanks for the reminder!
I'll be up on Mullet lake all next week. Driving up from my home in Asheville, NC. How far south on Huron and Lake Michigan do I need to travel to find Petoskys? Thanks, and love your channel!

We do have some good water here in Michigan. I'm very thankful that I live here.
Awesome finds, glad you let the wife go with! Thanks for sharing!
Once in awhile, I allow her to come along. I'm such a nice guy.
LOL!
Wow the water is so calm can see the rocks beautifully, beautiful day, 😊💙thank you for sharing your awesome day rock hounding 😊💙
We had a great day and it's fun to share it with others.
The "strange looking rock" reminded me of all the rocks on the beach rolled into one. :)
Sort of did look like that, didn't it?
You are always lucky with calm days on the lake. Every free day I have had this year to collect rocks I had to deal with two foot waves.
It's not luck. I watch the weather pretty closely and try to get out on calm days. It's easier on Lake Huron because the winds tend to come out of the west more and I live near Lake Huron. The Lake Michigan and Lake Superior hunts are a little tricker to do on calm days.
@@MichiganRocks the perks of being retired!
Someone else will enjoy finding those.
@@MichiganRocks that they will if they manage to find your secret beach 😉
Beautiful scenery. Fantastic finds. Go Blue! 〽️
Hail to the victors!
What a beautiful day ! Um. Go back and get those pudding stones! 😄🌞🙋♀️
Maybe next time.
that was a fun hunt. I didnt really appreciate how beautiful puddingstones were until i saw one in person. The little puddingstone i have is absolutley gorgeous
They are nice rocks. Honestly, in the past, I didn't appreciate them. I thought they looked like concrete. I have learned to love them though.
Very beautiful. You both found a lot of interesting rocks. 😇🥰😍👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😇🥰😍👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks, Indyana!
@@MichiganRocks You're welcome!
Looks like another successful day of puddingstone, Petoskeys, tillite, and other rather odd oddities....
Yep, it would have been fun even without the rocks.
Great rocks today
Omg, that rock at 12:45 had AMAZING potential!
That one did have some nice colors.
Do you find any petrified wood there? Some of the striated rocks remind me of petrified wood.
Nope, no pet. wood here. Some of it does look sort of similar, but it's not wood.
The rock shed is great you are right
Of course it's great. Did you think I'd recommend it if it wasn't? I always get good service and my orders arrive with a little bag of Tootsie Rolls.
Very cool rock hunting.
Keep on going... :)
Love the video!
Every time you toss away a fossil, an angel loses its wings. TFS 💖🦅🦅
That's ok, I'll just ring a bell a few times when I get home to put them back.
That is a beautiful beach for sure. The last coral fossil Nancy finds I do believe is called tube coral. I could be wrong. But thats what it looks like to me. You both found some really nice rocks. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Donna. Do you mean the one at 19:47? I'm pretty sure that's horn coral. I could see the one at 10:39 possibly being tube coral.
Yes the one at 10:39 . I had to go back and find the time stamp. I have some of that as well and wasn't sure what it was at first. Did some research and someone called it tube coral. I think its so cool looking.
Wow what a great beach I love the videos with Nancy!!
I think she's been on a record number of rock hunts with me this year. I've enjoyed having her along.
Thanks. It is fun to get out there.
Lots of "catch and release" rock hounding today.
Yep, lucky rocks.
where did you say this is?
I didn't say. I have to cross private property to get here and I don't want to encourage trespassing by publicizing the location.
Ohhhh ojos me gustan todo Muy bien 👍
BIF! Lovely day
Love that stuff!
Dude! I need a Cladapora!!!!!!!
It's fun stuff.
Looking for rocks is equally just as fun as swimming when you're at the lake
I'd argue that it's more fun. Swimming with a mask and looking for rocks at the same time combines them for even more fun.
I always chuckle when you find a ‘gneiss’ rock!😂 LOVE the ‘dragon eyes!😲😍
Did you see my new shirt that says "Gneiss is Nice"? It's a gneiss chert.
I'm glad I could help out. I think you'll love your Lot-O. Let me know if you have any questions when you get it.
@@joeastle5142 You're not far from Lake Michigan then, get going before the snow flies!
@@joeastle5142 Glad to help out, Joe.
I would drive 5 hours to meet you guy's!!! looking for rocks would be a bonus!!! Maybe try around April after the thaw
@@TheGreatLakesNomad I'll think about how to do that and where to do it. No promises though. Planning far enough ahead and having good weather is tricky.
Great video! Always enjoy when a long rock hunt releases!
It was longer in person. I think we were on the beach for four hours.
great video and great finding rocks.!! hi. have a good evening. i hope all is well. great views!!
Nice video I also luv the big green stripy rock Nancy. Re purpose the flip flop into a phone holder luv the mudstone too
We did find some beautiful rocks that day.
Boy, what would I give to have water that calm to shell in!😊 Beautiful! Be careful not to fly that drone too high - you'll give your secret spot away! Lol
I'm very conscious of where I fly the drone there. Thanks for the reminder.
@@nathensgirl1 Wow, I never saw anything like that at Whitefish Point. Yuck!
❤💙💜💖 this 🏆 📹 watched again.
That clear water makes me thirsty......
CAN U DRINK IT! SO FRESH LOOKING....
LOTS OF MINERALS FOR SURE! 👍
How beautiful stones👍👍👍
Ahhhhhh ur killing me!...that one pudding stone was legit!!!...I don't find many if at all over here..I'd saw my toe off for that big nice one u put back!..but I know..I know..I've been watching you long enough, I know the story!
Sorry to cause you distress, Wil. There were some pretty nice ones that day.
@@MichiganRocks lol..no distress rob!...strictly for entertainment purposes only!
I find myself yelling at the phone "keep it"
Don't worry, you're not the only one.
I love Michigan
Me too!
Great video Rob. Should have taken that last puddin' stone home. You can only look at one side at a time. And that one side was awesome!!
If there had been anything at all on the other side, I would have taken it.
Lovely day and some many rocks... that fossil may have been syringapora
Wow, love the video! Will be up that way in about a month, hope I find some great rocks like you did. Will be on port sanilac and Lexington. I am thinking you're a bit further north however. Lol.
All of my videos are north of there. Some day I need to get down that way and make a few videos. Good luck on your hunt!
Loved your dramatic reenactment. Lol. Really enjoy your videos and nice to see Nancy. How's that grandbaby?
Thanks. It was a fun day. The grandbaby should arrive within the hour so this will be a great weekend.
Somehow I kept you off camera. It took me years of practice to avoid picking up all of you.
LOL, including my shadow, you definitely have skills. Keep up the great work.
Hi there...
How do we see so many variations of rocks on a beach like that? One would think that the stones would be all the same type reflecting the geography...
Glaciers. The Petoskey stones and other limestone fossils are from the local bedrock, but most other stuff was deposited here by glaciers.
That UNUSUAL CHUNKY rock to me looked like PETRIFIED WOOD!
It wasn’t though.
Which great lake has the best variety of finding rocks / which great lake do you prefer?
@@MichiganRocks thorough answer, thank you
Very beautiful
Thanks for the reminder!
so i dont have any of the godwana tillite, would it have been a pudding stone from the age of the landmass godwana
I don't know too much about it except that it's really old, like over two billion years old.
Nancy when I come to Michigan in the spring will you take me out rockhounding? I’ll pay you
Ha! I don’t know if Rob will let me visit his secret beach with guests.
I'll be up on Mullet lake all next week. Driving up from my home in Asheville, NC. How far south on Huron and Lake Michigan do I need to travel to find Petoskys? Thanks, and love your channel!
On Lake Huron, you need to be south of Rogers City. In Lake Michigan south of Harbor Springs. Those are approximate locations.
@@MichiganRocks appreciate it!
