I wonder if that was one plan that popped into dad's head. Stage a murder suicide. Known psychiatric problems in mom, stage it so it looks like she killed their sons and herself in revenge for his affairs or because she was not stable.
Obviously, it's just a theory. But people have asked how the boys thought the parents could kill them and just get away with it. Here's another way.

I don't blame the boys one bit for what they done. At this point there was no other option but to unalived the parents. A case of unalive the parents first or the parents unalive them. You see Jose had repeatedly threatened them with unaliving if they ever told anyone. And both boys had just put themselves in the firing line bec Eric told Lyle and Lyle threatened to tell on Jose.So they feared for their lives. And they only just found out that Kitty knew all along and was chief accomplice to Jose, aiding and abetting his SA,and had a gun and wouldn't want this SA exposed and ruin her name so the boys saw the parents as one . At this point in time running away was useless. He would have someone track them down and unalived them. Even running away earlier he would have done the same, or fetched them home and beaten them up so bad that they would never have tried that stunt again. For all you disbelievers of the boys SA, you are sending a message to all SA victims to not tell anyone as you won't be believed but rather unalive your abuser, but do a better job of it than the boys did

From how Lyle describes his dad, he reminds me of mine, but he wasn’t sexually abusive. My dad has threatened me before, as well as my mom and siblings. He’s a narcissist, so you can never challenge him without being punished. His way or the highway. But he gave me the motivation to leave home, and I got a law degree. There are options. NO kids should gone through that Hell life. I wonder why they did not get help from an adult like a school teacher & they both removed to a “foster “home. 🏠 .. please FREE them for 30 yrs in jail had been a punishment long enough. It’s true either the parents died or the sons. 😱😢🤔.. please FREE them & their parents will pay their dues up in the next world. The both look very fine “looking” young men today .. my heart sunk ❤ after hearing all these testimonies. May u both find happiness & peace with your wives today& hopefully have your own children. & be a better person..Both of your parents are severely ILL.. 🧐😱 Forgive their sins & there were other options to take beside “resorting “to violence. Get the counseling u both brother need & God 🤝🫶🏻🙏🏻will reward u brother duo both in a special way! I am only a few years older than u / & got married in 1989. I treasured both of my children & would even “died “for them.. & it’s so SAD that u both endured such a horrible childhood .. 😢😢☹️& so do the best of what left in your lives!! Questions are strategic bec they would have outlines of subjects & specific answers they anticipate the witness will say on the stand to be part of official record. They intend to establish a usually narrow 'storyline', with as little as possible 'holes' as the *opposing atty can exploit &/or the jury can misenterpret. If the attorney felt like the witness already expressed what they need for the 'storyline'.. it's just right she 'encourage' her witness to move on. Atty also sometimes use words or demeanor to steer the flow of info.. cues to help witness avoid straying frm their storyline.
