I’ve followed a number of great UA-cam golf instructors over the years, but I keep coming back to Paul Wilson. I am one who constantly struggles with involving the arms too early. Thanks for another great video.
I’m 75, and I’ve been using Paul’s swing methodology for over 12 years now. I play my best golf when (1) I’m totally relaxed and tension-free, and (2) I pause slightly at the top before starting down. I need that slight hesitation at the top to engage the “from the ground up “ kinetic chain that Paul teaches. If I try to blend the top of the backswing with the start down, as many players do, I tend to slide laterally and hit the ball with my arms. A slight pause at the top allows me to fire the legs and hips first. The point is, do whatever you have to do to let the lower body initiate the downswing and be the engine that whips the arms and club through impact. This is such an easy and pain-free way to play the game, it’s well worth the time and effort to learn it just as Paul teaches it. This is a great drill and, in my opinion, the very best way to learn the downswing in the proper sequence.
Yes. I used to have a slight pause and I played decently with no lessons a poor grip a cupped wrist and a sway! Now 30 years later I don't do any of these things but have a more " modern" swing. It is very accurate but tough on the body staying in the side bend through impact. I've been trying out Paul's swing and am pleased with the results thus far. Ball flight a little higher and distance is better on the good strikes. If I do use the arms first the results are dismal. The pause seems to work wonders. As well as shaking out the tension in the shoulders and arms at setup.I will stick with it because I'm not getting any younger and want to play as long as I can stand on two legs. Even one leg if I had to!
Wow I should have seen this video 3 years ago. It is the most important drill I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing it. I won the medal yesterday thanks in part to this video.
I have been trying to improve my golf game by watching UA-cam videos. After watching quite a few over the last year or so I discovered your videos. I have been studiously watching your videos for a few months, using my outside golf net to hit balls. I have been able to easily understand each of your videos. Today I played in the local scramble, having to pull 15 points. I decided to put your loose wrists, hung and unhinge and using my body to store energy techniques to the test. After 18 holes I had 26 points, plus 11 points and won my flight. As I was standing there waiting to receive my money I mentioned that I had learned from UA-cam videos. A guy standing by said he also had learned from UA-cam particularly from a guy named Paul Wilson. I said me too. And then we both simultaneously said “loose wrists”. I want to thank you for your videos, keep up the good work.
That "stop at the top" (i.e. hesitation) to make a mental switch to the lower body is a wonderful thought. Also helps to slow things down and to get the arms out of the swing. One can easily do this on the course. Brilliant!! (Similar to how you teach pitch shots on your Ignition site.)
Not sure if you actually look at these comments but if so you literally changed my golf life with your videos. 50 yrs old. 7 index. Ready to quit. Shot a +3 today and didn’t even try. Life changing concepts. My goal is to travel from Boston to Vegas to shake your hand in person!
I do look at all comments. So glad you are doing well. That's life changing for sure. Stay focused. Might want to watch this one: ua-cam.com/video/glKnfVbhuXo/v-deo.html
Thanks so much. I want people to understand it then try it. If you know "why" then maybe you will try it. Once you do you will see amazing shots and the whole swing starts to make sense.
I am a mental midget. Started playing golf seriously at age 59 when I retired. I am 72. I went from trying to break 100, then 90, then 80. I was an arm swinger. I bought new drivers every two years because of the promise of more distance. No joy. I also sliced the driver a lot. I applied lots of band aids to my swing in order to get my handicap down to a 12. But I knew there was a "secret" to hitting my driver further than 180 -200 yards and not having to use fairway woods to reach every par 4. About two months ago I started watching Pauls videos and using my body to swing the club. Wow. No shit. Not saying I have it perfected - but I can now effortlessly drive the ball at least 20 -30 yards further - and almost always without slicing! I play 3 or 4 times a week at the same golf course, so the improvement is very obvious. Thank you!!!
So glad you found me. As you see that hitting with arms is never going to work. Staying loose does take understanding and getting used to new feelings. Once you get it though it is amazing how long you can hit it with minimal effort. Keep up the good work.
Glad you are getting into it and glad you found me now instead of 10 years from now when you have bad habits. Keep this stuff simple. In each tip I explain it in a way you can understand and at least try it. Don't expect miracles. Working on your swing is work. Some things you get quick. Others may take days/weeks/months. The fact you play hockey is a good thing. Use your body (slap shot) wrists (wrist shot). I too was a hockey player as a kid.
Thanks Paul. I simply can’t understand why none of the 6 instructors I’ve had over 25 years never told me to use my body to swing. I’ve been arm swinging all this time. Thanks again
Exactly! There are a lot of teachers that teach that. I just see it differently. Now that you know that you DO NOT hit with the arms let's see how well you will start playing. ***START HERE*** Body Swing Concept: ua-cam.com/video/E8y9jEyY35k/v-deo.html Grip: ua-cam.com/video/jQZLp8bF-Ww/v-deo.html Hinge Rehinge: ua-cam.com/video/6ZeTqcz2pmE/v-deo.html Secure Grip: ua-cam.com/video/Z8K3Gctkz7A/v-deo.html Best Drill: ua-cam.com/video/cVhtL-d1B9Y/v-deo.html Power the swing with the legs and hip not the hands and arms. Great vid, thanks. Your frustration with bad golfers not getting better, and your desire to make them better, shines through! I’m reminded of a dedication in an old Tommy Armour book. “This is for all the bad golfers. God must love them, because he made so many”
I've been playing golf for about 35 years. Most of the time ending the round in disappoinment over poor results. Two weeks ago I came across several of your videos. I have to say it changed my game and attitude about golf completely. While I've watched many UA-cam tips over the years, yours had the biggest impact on my game. I've transitioned from using mainly arms to more body and legs. Your explanation was easy to follow and put into practice, even at home. This was the key for me and I'm sure for many who've watched your tips. The improvement was immediate. I'm playing the best golf ever! THANK YOU VERY MUCH PAUL! You're truly an amazing teacher.
That's great to hear. I have been where you have been. No fun when you are not playing well and you're not having fun out there. I just see it and say it differently. Simple is a huge key. Not hitting with arms is another. Keep working on it and you will have years of great golf.
...a real eye-opener when I finally let go of trying to "hit" the ball using this drill, & started using my legs, hips, & body to "pull" my arms through the swing! The first time I got it, eyes got big & I definately said "Whoa!" Thanks!
Nice! This is the feeling. Now you have experienced it you know you can do it. Imagine every ball like that. Stay focused. Once you get this your whole game goes to a new level.
Awesome, easy, muscle memory drill Paul. I can hang out in the back yard and do these reps off and on at any time I feel like, and they translate to a smooth transition. Doesn't hurt to have a little lag in there at all, like these young kids you talk about. I find myself doing these and again, focusing on your " Tame the Wild Stallion/ 50 Percent " thoughts and the results when you decide to hit some balls are just mind blowing. Thanks, again.
Very good. I keep telling everyone the fastest way to get it is to do practice swings at home. Once a week is not going to cut it. Sounds like you are on track. Keep at it.
I know this video has been out for a couple of years but I am new to Paul's channel. I was struggling with distance and contact on my irons. This has totally changed me from arm swing to lower body. Wow! This is so much easier and the ball goes farther. This is a great tip! Thank you Paul!
I listened to an instructor when I first started playing who said he would play someone with his legs in casts and they would play with casts on their arms. Silly me thought this sounded good and I was soon swinging at the ball with my arms. I then watched a video by Manual de la Torres who showed me an effortless swing using the arms and legs together and my game improved. Your now the only one I watch for golf instruction and at 68 I'm playing some of the best golf of my life. Just a stroll down memory lane. Thank you and keep up the great videos.
Yes, silly you. The guy with the casts on his arms was still turning his body. If he said he would have casts on his arms and not rotated his torso he wouldn't have been too successful. This tip explains it: ua-cam.com/video/xOddL5cA5Fg/v-deo.html Glad you went back to an effortless swing though and are now successful. Also, glad you are sticking with me and liking the videos. Keep up the good work.
WOW, another great drill Paul. Been playing for 22 years, and still learning. Your teaching vids really resonate with me, helping with consistency. Thanks.
This is the best drill I have found to QUIT HITTING! Thanks Paul, I can finally swing effortlessly. This tip with loose wrists and a neutral grip have really helped my game.
After hitting the ball with my arms for 20 years it's been so tough to retrain my brain to use the legs. I feel like I get it for about a week and I'm hitting it like a pro, then I wake up one day and I'm back to my old habit. I'm going to continue to work on this everyday until it's natural. Thanks so much for all the tips!
This is you getting greedy. I did a tip on it here: ua-cam.com/video/glKnfVbhuXo/v-deo.html Need to be content with what you've got. Watch these too: ua-cam.com/video/utFggMFjtng/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/FV8uSZ16Bys/v-deo.html It's about fairways and greens right now not 280 down the fairway.
Just tried this out at home and it really opened my eyes. Starting the downswing with a hip turn is the key to power in the golf swing. I was taking slow and deliberate swings using this method and I still generated clubhead speed with no effort other than ensuring I was using my hips and lower body on the downswing. I've watched every one of Paul's videos and will continue to rewatch for as long as I play golf!
Glad you tried it. Yes, it's in the hips for sure. Just a different power source. People just have to see it then make the switch then get good at it. Problem is people have no patience. They want it instantly.
For sure. That is the power source in the swing. If you are not even thinking about using them they will never fire. So start thinking about them then we are all on the same page.
In the last couple of months, I've followed so many golf coaches to try and improve my game and get the basics of my swing. You are by far the best teacher and the only one I admire. You've made so many things simpler for me, and my swing never looked so good. I particularly love the wrist hinge instructions. I don't even care if I hit the ball further (which I am now :-) ), I only care that I hit it well. Thank you for all the tips. Keep up the good work , Paul.
Thank you for you kind works. I truly appreciate it. Simple is the name of the game. You need to understand what you are even trying to do. This is half the battle. People work on things and have no idea how they fit into the big picture. So they try something and it doesn't work so they stop doing it. If you see the importance and if I can make it simple enough you will do it and get some success. See some good shots and you will want to do it. You sound like you are definitely getting it. Keep up the good work and keep working on it throughout the winter. Next season will be great.
@@paulwilsongolf Thanks for fixing my chicken wing swing haha. I'm from Canada so there's just a few weeks left to play golf until next golf season. I know, it's depressing. But I'm going to keep practising inside, and keep watching your posts. Best, Phillip
This tip really clicked for me. The two tiered approach you so clearly discuss here is intuitive to me and easy to execute mentally. I think that is important for me, because it will quickly lead me to the physical turn.. The other great visual was that you start the swing by shifting the weight by turning through a circle and not a sway. Guilty of that. Elvis would be proud of my swaying, rocking and rolling.. I will continue to work on this and I know I will see results by the beginning of next season. Thank you so much for sharing!
I have had a couple lessons with a local pro and his philosophy is similar to yours. Even using tour tips and drills as reinforcements between lessons has made a world of difference in my progression. Thank you.
So much golf instruction is confusing because it is very ambiguous in nature but I find your tips very clear, This is the clearest instruction I have come across, Thanks Paul.
Thanks so much. I appreciate it. Yes, I think they were on the Golf Channel talking about it. This is a good one to work on to get the separation. Watch this too: ua-cam.com/video/hJeAcEYbvhM/v-deo.html Do this too: ua-cam.com/video/THm6SktFifk/v-deo.html
You are the only teacher that teaches this. I have been trying to find one for years to get me to stop at the top and smoothly come down. Its a shame I cant find one near me.
Paul, your videos are awesome. Just started watching the last couple of weeks but have seen some flashes of progress. I'll keep working on those drills. Thanks so much for your help
I finally understand and feel it...but MAN its hard to "switch" the thought process. When I do it feels awesome. Thanks Paul, this is the perfect drill for me because I rush and so badly want to hit the ball with hands and arms. If ever in southwestern Washington state come give me lessons and the beer is on me! Great Video instructions...so glad I found you!
It is hard to stop hitting and switch. Now you at least have a thought to do it. If you are actually thinking about it you may/should start doing it. Maybe start by doing this. We need to tame the wild stallion in you: ua-cam.com/video/cVhtL-d1B9Y/v-deo.html Yes, look me up if you make it town. I teach quite a few students from Washington State. In the meantime you can do a lesson through my app here: bodyswing.com/coachlink
This has finally done it for me! I have never been able to find the hallowed “inside” or “be on plane” these swing thoughts have finally enabled me to do it. Thanks Paul it’s a great video that 99% of amateur golfers will benefit from. 👊
Glad I could help! That is what people don't get. You hit with arms and you come over the top. Turn the arms off and use your body it attacks from the inside. This is due to simple physics. I will go into more detail in future tips. In the meantime everyone needs to stop hitting with the arms asap.
Paul - thanks so much for the "easy to understand" instructional videos. This "uncoiling" move that is initiated by the lower body makes such a huge difference. It helps me generate smooth acceleration through the hitting or perhaps I should say the "impact" zone. This concept is not easy as you have stated but once you get a hang of it, it is very "liberating." I know I will have to work to engrain the sequencing action (the separation of the top from the lower body) but it will happen in due time. Thanks again Paul for the straight-talk videos. I love your occasional sarcasm and gestures. Lastly, who was the single person who gave this video a "thumbs-down?"
Glad you like the tips. I just try to keep it simple so people get it. Glad you felt the hips. If so, you can keep doing it. The more you turn off the arms the more you turn on the body. So relax the arms as you do it. There are idiots out there that gives thumbs down to everything. You can never get rid of them. I just have to keep making people better. The snowball is rolling downhill no. Just a matter of time.
Paul this is the best tip how to move hips first. I have a pretty with that not thinking at all Now I get it. Also along with the lag drill and combining this drill works good. Also slow motion will help with every drill. Thanks
Thanks, Paul. This is an awesome drill for not only taking the arms out of the swing. It is also helping me to get over my habit of rushing through the shots after a few good drives. I do look forward to your videos and every one of them is a gem.
Oh man... Thanks for this excellent video! This drill makes soooo much sence to me you wouldn't believe it! Finally things are starting to fall in place for me and I can't wait to take this drill to the driving range. This together with the other of your videos I've been watching gives me great hope for the future....
I love that you are practicing at home. Few do when this is the best place to practice. Just make sure you are doing more practice swings than hitting balls.
More great tips and drills, this one here, in particular, has been very helpful, yourself and Danny Maude, in the UK, are the best at explaining in a simple, but most importantly, effective, manner. I've tried some of these drills and can't believe how effective, and fun they are, fun because they're so effective, you know you're making progress, going in the right direction. I stumbled onto you by accident, I think you may have commented on another channel, maybe overhand golf or something, but it was a happy accident, great stuff. If i'm over in Vegas, hopefully in a year or so, I'll definitely book in some lessons, subscribed 👍
Glad it helped. Yes, Danny has great stuff too. Having fun is the key. Once this is confusing, you are getting nowhere or frustrated it's a problem. Been there. Glad you found me. Thanks for subscribing.
Hi Paul love watching and trying all you show I can say your drills have brought more back to my game than any other lessons have done for me thanks will always follow you and your instruction
I watch all of your videos . There amazing tips . I try so many of them . I can’t wait til the Canada and USA border is open , so i can go there and get a lesson . I would love to see how much more distance i can get from lessons from you . Thank you for all of your videos .
Hi Paul, I followed you this year and all are good tips to me. Great thank you! It helps me go back to my game after stop playing for three years due to back problem. Now, I can reach back where I left off. Keep the tips coming! 😉🤗
I have a confession to make. And let me apologize beforehand to Paul. I have just recently discovered your technique and it has already shown some pretty vast improvements in my game. I will need a putting video however because that seems to be just another of my major flaws. What I need to apologize for is not letting my friends in on the secret. I am selfishly carrying forward with this knowledge because bets tend to be made and if my buddies are all staying put with their games and I am improving at an alarming rate I will be winning more of the bets than ever before. So Paul. I am sorry that I am not passing on the knowledge but know that it is working and at least helping one guy improve.
Well ... thanks for coming clean. How about spreading the work to those who aren't your friends. See someone on the range having trouble tell them to look me up. Any help would be appreciated. Got to get the word out. Too many people need help.
@@paulwilsongolf there are friends that don’t live near me that I have told so definitely spreading the word. Just not telling the 6 or 7 guys I play with regularly lol...just a small handful of people I’m not divulging to but I know many people from all across Canada that play but don’t play with me.
Thanks for the promo. I appreciate it. Keep the secret. I love it when they start taking notice. That's when you know you are getting it. Keep at it. Let's destory them!
Actually i found other videos also interesting.i have just started at age 60.i am told my rotation is not enough but as per your video i do a bit more than 90.the issue you rightly put is transition from upper to lower body.it has to come without thinking.which of your videos show the takeaway right to the top a bit slowly as what i have seen are quite fast..thank you once again from India
Glad you like the tips. Not sure why someone would tell you your rotation is not enough at 90 degrees. Seems fine to me. Once you are coiled though you need to uncoil. This takes understanding and actually thinking about making the switch. Stay focused on this tip and the one below to get the lower body moving: ua-cam.com/video/RdphthCQ9VM/v-deo.html
The thought I like is to swing with my core and rib cage into a full backswing to automatically produce the momentum to transition and swing through with the lower body. Like you teach, it's a body swing.
just joined.....great drill/will try. I am predominantly RH i.e. play tennis/write RH but golf/play hockey LH so there is very little, if any, instruction that deals with this issue. So in this example where u throw a golf ball w your right hand as a RH golfer to engage the lower body, that seems natural. However, for me to throw the golf ball w my LH would be pretty funny!
I have taught countless people in this same scenario. There are advantages and disadvantages. The right hand is the stronger hand which is great for the grip and arm unit. It's bad for the body swinging left handed due to not being able to fire properly and hard enough. The key is moving the head as you coil back. This will allow you to load the weight on the instep. Then you need a left sided trigger to uncoil. This would be turn the right hip back, lock the right leg. This uncoils the lower with a right sided trigger in a left handed swing. The tricky part will be moving your head as you coil back. Easy way is to look at the label or dimple on the back of the ball as you coil back. Keep looking at it as you fire the lower with a right sided trigger. Need to be angled behind it as you hit the ball. I usually don't have a problem with lefties. They pick it up pretty quick. I also prefer lefties to draw it which they never usually have a problem doing.
Thanks. You would make sure the wrists are super loose then turn way way way way way faster using your legs and hips. Do this drill to get good at using them: ua-cam.com/video/lUOLMl_zmek/v-deo.html
@@paulwilsongolf Thanks for your time. I'm 52 and have always been the worst golfer on the course. I have been an arms swinger I can't wait to apply your methods.
Hey Paul, I've been watching your videos for a while now, as soon as I saw your videos something clicked for me and I realized how I was doing things wrong. Now I consistently hit the ball straight. However shot-shaping and hitting the ball far are still an issue. (Yes I am using my lower body and instead of using my arms. Also I learned by you how to finally rotate/coil properly, I haven't put in practice yet, that was probably one factor.) I came across something in golf where pros slightly squat in the swing, and so far everything you've taught lines up with what they do. But I have never seen you address squatting slightly and or how to do it in the golf swing and using your hips and legs along with it , is this something you approve of, or mentioned, if so where?
The squat will happen if you are firing your legs and hips properly. I wouldn't say it's a squat on purpose. It would be a lowering due to your body tilting behind the ball more in the downswing and your head lowering to look at the ball. Keep in mind you have a quarter second from the top to impact. You think squat and you've already hit the ball. So forget the squat. Choose a downswing trigger and learn how to fire your lower body to hit the ball.
I found it useful to get set up and then imagine that my arms were paralyzed but i still had to play the shot Only way to do that is to use your body, both going back and coming forward. Some how the hit always manages to occur despite the "paralysis". It's kind of fun actually.
Interesting thought. Keep in mind though you do need to set the top. If you are not a great position then you would be working on getting the position. This would mean you would be feeling your arms as you work on it. Paralyzed arms in this case would be in the downswing not hitting or helping it.
Hi Paul ...Love all your lessons but any tips on getting to swing exactly as I do in practise...I can swing smoothly and full finish all week at home and then before I hit a ball at the range but then I cannot seem to forget that there is a ball there when I actually drive... v v frustrating
Need to find an ending point you can repeat. This is what I teach in my body Swing program. Unfortunately I don't give it all away on YT. So find a point. Remember it. Then think more that point then hitting the ball. I talk about it here. ua-cam.com/video/gIp4ifKuZIw/v-deo.html
@@paulwilsongolf Hi Paul..I was confident you would help me but it still blows my mind that you reply to everyone. Thanks for the link I will practice A to B at home all week before I go to the range. Of all teachers. You truly are the one whose primary objective is helping as many as you can and it is greatly appreciated by myself and so many ordinary golfers. I’ll get back to you when I crack it.
Well, I try to help as many as I can. So many people out there needing help. I've been through all of this myself and know how frustrating it can be. Yes, keep me posted.
Absolutely. The first goal is to get the arm unit working and you never put slice spin on your shots. At that point you are thinking coil ... uncoil. Then watching your ball to add more or less body.
Of all the videos I’ve watched this is undoubtably the one that has benefitted my swing* the most, a true revolution! Thank you very much Paul. And of course seeing Hideki Matsuyama using the same technique last w/e confirms how pertinent you are. Applying this drill has already greatly improved my regularity, all I have to do now is to try to incorporate some lag to improve my chs. Br
Paul would this be one of the very first drill to finally switch to an effortless golf swing? I have been doing this in my last 2 sessions on the driving range. To bad the eeather is already too cold to put it into play here in Canada. What do you suggest? Continue at home? What would then be the next good drill after this? Many thanks!
Well to get the effortless swing I would be starting with the grip and loosening the wrists. Everyone wants to hit hard. If I can at least get their wrists looser they are on their way. They will hit some good shots etc. From there you add body. Not hitting in the downswing is really the last step. In colder climates you do practice swings working on these pieces all winter. No ball means no distraction. So you will start out the season playing great instead of taking a break and having to work on it all summer when really you should be playing and having fun.
Paul - Sorry been blowing up your youtube pages but this information is really good. One item I wanted to mention, when you take the longer back swing with the relaxed arms, when you swing with the lower body first it solves the weight distribution issue and allows you plenty of time to get into your lead foot and strike the ground correctly. I see a lot of high cap AM's take short swings and they can never get into their lead side and they make that choppy old man swing, even when they are 30 and 40. I try not to look because I don't want to visualize that ugly short weak swing in my minds eye. Just curious if you look away when you are playing with horrible golfers? One of the items I find difficult is when they asked me did I see where their ball went. Of course I didn't I refuse to watch their swing.
For sure you need to do a decent backswing. This Jon Rahm swing is tough. Not to say I don't give this as a drill for some people as the shorter swing can get their body moving but people already doing a short swing and not using their body is a problem. I would lengthen that person for sure. I don't care about other golfers. Doesn't bother me at all. I am really in my own world. I see what they do but it doesn't register. I might talk about it in this tip (I know I talked about it one tip a while ago): ua-cam.com/video/d9qjTrotjpk/v-deo.html
paul, whats a mistake you see students do with that first move of legs and hips from the top? swaying lateral? anything else? want to make sure im doing it right. does feel freeing already
Most just do nothing. They chop off the follow through after the ball is hit. They don't lock the lead leg. Very few sway. Some slide but not many. It's just lack of firing the lower. Watch: ua-cam.com/video/7z5eUcSwlSk/v-deo.html
I was told to fall ever so slightly towards the left at the top of the backswing, but whenever I tried that, I kept topping the ball, so I just stick to what you say instead as I hit the ball a lot better when I do.
You were doing it too much. This move to the left would happen on its own as you fire the lower body as I suggest. You are 80/20 into the back foot as you near the top. You then go to 50/50 as you are coming down then 90/10 into impact and through swing. If you were 80/20 on your back foot and you went to 50/50 would your head not move forward? So stop thinking about and learn to coil and uncoil. People are watching slow motion swings and trying to teach these moves that happen in nanoseconds to people to are average golfers. Never going to happen. Keep it simple and stop watching other tips and listening to other people. This will only make you confused.
That’s a great thought. The backswing is a setup for power. I have a question as well. Could a slice be cause from shooting the hips forward to quickly in the swing? I’ve been slicing and I feel like my hips don’t give my hands enough time to bring the face back to square
Thanks. Got to think differently that's all. That is not a slice. It's a push fade. Completely different shots. Watch: ua-cam.com/video/p6YWiBPnQqI/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/5_O0H2QNFo0/v-deo.html
Here's a funny example albeit painful. While at the range I injured my back. Couldn't even bend over to pick up a golf ball. Uh oh. Being hardheaded I said I could still play. Only way I could do this was with my feet close together on all shots. Arms and wrists totally relaxed. I shot close to my normal score! I hit one 3wood on a long par 4 farther than I hit my normal driver. So I'm wondering how far could I hit it using the hips and legs?
i understand more now i been trying to feel the body hit the ball i was turning to fast begin with i got my timeing right it felt so effortless was a good feeling i had just a little draw spin.i was thinking fire my hips fast as i could before i even started down swing i got it now right timing
I have won every tournment at the club since i been watching an doing what you say as my coach.just keep getting better an better every week now..if i could just get rid of couple bad wholes i be a par golfer.its like the other swing kick in every now an then i know i keep working hard i get this out completely i not giving up it feels to good
I’ve struggled with handle driving the club thru the hit zone which makes the club head deloft and leaving club face open. I can’t get myself to rehinge I’m hinging but not rehingeing. What video would help me the most?
@@paulwilsongolf thank you so much for responding. Just signed up for coach link as well. So maybe I’ll catch you when your on one time. Thank you again
I'm defo guilty of hitting with the arms & hands. What an idiot I am. Just been trying the body swing in my back garden and will continue to do so until the lockdown in the UK ends. Then off to the driving range! Can't wait frankly.
Very good. Different way to do it. If swinging with the arms was the way to do it wouldn't the great majority of people be really good? Few are good so it must mean they are doing it a different way. Just keep thinking of it and try to turn the arms off using the legs and hips as the power source. Once you do your whole world will change.
@@paulwilsongolf Thanks Paul. I've tried it again in my back garden this afternoon, and unless I am imagining things my clubhead speed has increased markedly with, really, zero effort on my part. This, and your tip about staying behind the ball into the impact zone makes me very optimistic. Cannot wait for lockdown to be over!
This would vary from person to person. Just keep doing it until you feel you are at least thinking down there. If you are thinking about it you will probably do it. If you just keep hitting then you will never get it.
When I do exactly what you are demonstrating I hit a great long shot. Something about the hesitation first works, but I’m not consistent YET! But, I get there.
Yes. I used it for a few days. And the results were excellent. Then I tried to hit even farther and lost it! Back to using the arms. I wish I was weak and skinny then I'd have to use the body first!
You are leaning left as you do it. Probably shifting everything on top of the left foot right at the top. You need to stay behind it as you fire. Watch: ua-cam.com/video/BzBgiUhyrB4/v-deo.html and: ua-cam.com/video/sbE-hzTXgNo/v-deo.html
You are not doing it right. As you uncoil you are immediately shifting your weight which is leaning you forward in the downswing. Here you go: ua-cam.com/video/sbE-hzTXgNo/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/KlffJzbskmM/v-deo.html and try this too: ua-cam.com/video/m8FxSZSmKEw/v-deo.html fixed.
Yes, one swing all golfers. Anytime your back hurts you are hitting with arms. This is a violent move. If you try to do that all locked up it can and will hurt your body. Stand taller. Allow your head to move back. Keep it too still and this will hurt your back too. You are coiling in circular movement. Couple this with loose wrists and you basically have the swing. Here are some tips to follow as a beginner: Body Swing Concept: ua-cam.com/video/E8y9jEyY35k/v-deo.html Grip: ua-cam.com/video/jQZLp8bF-Ww/v-deo.html Alignment: ua-cam.com/video/VFZc0Wq282k/v-deo.html Simple Swing: ua-cam.com/video/gTLvRsjwfIM/v-deo.html Wrists: Hinge Rehinge: ua-cam.com/video/6ZeTqcz2pmE/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/M868QsTlGt4/v-deo.html Body: ua-cam.com/video/RdphthCQ9VM/v-deo.html
So you need to work on your swing. Work on the arm unit first. Hinge and rehinge until you rarely ever hit the ball with slice spin. Once you can do that you know what the ball is going to do before you do it. Then you would be working on your body to power the swing and hit it straight. So grip, setup, hinge/rehinge first. Then body. Grip: ua-cam.com/video/jQZLp8bF-Ww/v-deo.html Hinge Rehinge: ua-cam.com/video/6ZeTqcz2pmE/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/j1mS5Ku8Q10/v-deo.html
I’ve followed a number of great UA-cam golf instructors over the years, but I keep coming back to Paul Wilson. I am one who constantly struggles with involving the arms too early. Thanks for another great video.
Very good. They always come back.
@@paulwilsongolf 7
Great advice from a long time student. Glad you are still with me.
@@nicholasdemetriades9154 Might I ask how long it took you to change. Like many who watch endless vids on UA-cam, we get conflicting swing info.
I would stick with Paul, his swing is really cool, that's how I want to hit a golf ball.
Love this swing thought...very simple and powerful technique.
Glad you like it! Thanks so much.
Wow I should have seen this video 3 years ago. It is the most important drill I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing it. I won the medal yesterday thanks in part to this video.
Glad you liked it and yes, this is important for sure. Get this and you lean to start the lower body first. Keep at it.
Now that's a cool story and great day. I love it. Word is getting out. Going to be harder for you to win once everyone is doing it. Ha.
Might want to watch this one:
ua-cam.com/video/glKnfVbhuXo/v-deo.html
I’ve watched many videos on golf. This gentleman makes twice as much scene as anyone.
Thank you Sir.!!!
Just started to play golf last yr I'm 56yrs old I played hockey all my life your videos are really good to watch I've learned alot ty paul.

Great vid, thanks. Your frustration with bad golfers not getting better, and your desire to make them better, shines through! I’m reminded of a dedication in an old Tommy Armour book. “This is for all the bad golfers. God must love them, because he made so many”
Absolutely. I have seen it all. All they have to do is make it simple.
Keep at it.
You're the man paul, your tips have been very helpful to me as a beginning golfer I've been able to advance my game very quickly
Glad to hear it
I know this video has been out for a couple of years but I am new to Paul's channel. I was struggling with distance and contact on my irons. This has totally changed me from arm swing to lower body. Wow! This is so much easier and the ball goes farther. This is a great tip! Thank you Paul!
Great job. This is a good tip for sure. Got to make the switch. Once you do it's a whole new game. Keep up the good work.
You are heaven sent. Your drill significantly improved my downswing. More power on your YT channel. Thanks again, Sir!
Glad to help. Keep at it.
@@paulwilsongolf Thanks, Paul. I don't know how I missed that one.

Very welcome. Stay focused and hear what I am describing. It will all keep making sense as I keep posting more into the future.
I love these videos, simple explanation of why, not just a re-canned recipe of a swing.
Glad you like them! Knowing "why" is vital.
This is the best drill I have found to QUIT HITTING! Thanks Paul, I can finally swing effortlessly. This tip with loose wrists and a neutral grip have really helped my game.
Yes, that's a good one. This on too for those who are really hitting hard:
ua-cam.com/video/eyR514QvAoI/v-deo.html
After hitting the ball with my arms for 20 years it's been so tough to retrain my brain to use the legs. I feel like I get it for about a week and I'm hitting it like a pro, then I wake up one day and I'm back to my old habit. I'm going to continue to work on this everyday until it's natural. Thanks so much for all the tips!
This is you getting greedy. I did a tip on it here:

It's about fairways and greens right now not 280 down the fairway.
Thanks Paul for the tip. I never really think about hitting with the arms but now I'll be better because of firing those hips

Glad you like it and it clicked. This is sometimes all it takes.
I have had a couple lessons with a local pro and his philosophy is similar to yours. Even using tour tips and drills as reinforcements between lessons has made a world of difference in my progression. Thank you.

You are the only teacher that teaches this. I have been trying to find one for years to get me to stop at the top and smoothly come down. Its a shame I cant find one near me.
Glad you found me. This is a great drill. Stopping at the top does so many things. Make it smooth and almost unnoticeable once you are better at it.

@@paulwilsongolf it’s that bit that has been the light bulb moment for me. TURN THE ARMS OFF!
Yes. Shake out the arms helps in setup and pause really gets the body moving first. Easier to stay behind the ball.
You da man, Paul! Thank you!
Thank you. Thank you.
Paul this is the best tip how to move hips first.

Thanks. Yes it would slow the rushing down too. I didn't even think of that. That will be big for you.
Yes Paul. I can't believe that by simply slowing down the swing you are able to hit more fairways consistently.

Stay focused on this tip and the one below to get the lower body moving:
ua-cam.com/video/RdphthCQ9VM/v-deo.html
The thought I like is to swing with my core and rib cage into a full backswing to automatically produce the momentum to transition and swing through with the lower body. Like you teach, it's a body swing.
That will work too but you need those legs at some point to get the extra power. ua-cam.com/video/xOddL5cA5Fg/v-deo.html
Brilliant as always Paul 🇦🇺

just joined.....great drill/will try.
Enjoy your videos! You hit the driver 120 yards, how do you increase the distance to 200?
I like it
Great thanks.
Hi Paul great video as usual, is it true after time this swing will happen automatically we won't have to think about it.
Cheers Michael
Br
Glad it was helpful! Making this switch is huge. Glad you are working on it.
Paul would a “perfect” example of this GREAT drill be Hideki Matsuyama?
Exactly. He is an anomaly that can actually hit it from a stopped position at the top. Tricky. I wouldn't recommend it.
Like your videos have a question why do i hit behind the ball its driving me nuts.
Thanks. Watch these:

I might talk about it in this tip (I know I talked about it one tip a while ago):

Thanks Paul you always come through on UA-cam. Keep up the wonderful work.
paul, whats a mistake you see students do with that first move of legs and hips from the top? swaying lateral? anything else? want to make sure im doing it right. does feel freeing already
Most just do nothing. They chop off the follow through after the ball is hit. They don't lock the lead leg. Very few sway. Some slide but not many. It's just lack of firing the lower. Watch:
ua-cam.com/video/7z5eUcSwlSk/v-deo.html
@@paulwilsongolf thank you, make's perfect sense, because when I follow your instructions I hit better shots
Yes, confusion is not good. Stay focused. I have been getting amazing results for over 31 years now.
@@paulwilsongolf thank you, I started playing 8 months ago and I always come back to your channel, as it is the best.
I've found that starting the swing with the body also eliminates the over the top and the shank.
It sure does. Glad you caught that.
You should do a video on pelvic tilt
At setup or throughout the swing?
@@paulwilsongolf throughout
See, you took the arms out and didn't hit it any shorter. So why every use your arms again? Once you fire the lower you will be 10-30% longer.
i understand more now i been trying to feel the body hit the ball i was turning to fast begin with i got my timeing right it felt so effortless was a good feeling i had just a little draw spin.i was thinking fire my hips fast as i could before i even started down swing i got it now right timing
I have won every tournment at the club since i been watching an doing what you say as my coach.just keep getting better an better every week now..if i could just get rid of couple bad wholes i be a par golfer.its like the other swing kick in every now an then i know i keep working hard i get this out completely i not giving up it feels to good
That is all part of learning it and no one is ever perfect all of the time. This is where the short game comes in.
@@paulwilsongolf i been working on my short game getting up an down better

Cool. If it says HIRE I am online. After people use it once they love it.
How long do I exercise this drill until it’s there?
This would vary from person to person. Just keep doing it until you feel you are at least thinking down there. If you are thinking about it you will probably do it. If you just keep hitting then you will never get it.
When I do exactly what you are demonstrating I hit a great long shot. Something about the hesitation first works, but I’m not consistent YET! But, I get there.
Yes, keep at it. Sounds like you are on track.
Yes. I used it for a few days. And the results were excellent. Then I tried to hit even farther and lost it! Back to using the arms. I wish I was weak and skinny then I'd have to use the body first!
When I use the body and turn the arms off I seem to pull a lot more left more often. Maybe I fire the lower body to fast and hands are too far behind?
You are leaning left as you do it. Probably shifting everything on top of the left foot right at the top. You need to stay behind it as you fire. Watch: ua-cam.com/video/BzBgiUhyrB4/v-deo.html and:
ua-cam.com/video/sbE-hzTXgNo/v-deo.html
When I fire my lower body and rotate, i hit it solid but pull the heck out of it
You are not doing it right. As you uncoil you are immediately shifting your weight which is leaning you forward in the downswing. Here you go:
ua-cam.com/video/sbE-hzTXgNo/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/KlffJzbskmM/v-deo.html and try this too: ua-cam.com/video/m8FxSZSmKEw/v-deo.html fixed.
@@paulwilsongolf Thanks very much. I get the concept. Will work on keeping head behind the ball. Does the head move to the left on or after impact?
Paul Wilson is the goat
Thanks. I apprecaite it.
Is this the same for women and men? i'm a 63 year old beginner, and my lower back kills me in my traditional lessons
The hips turn when you kick out your left knee like every pro golfer does on their downswing
That would be a downswing trigger which is what I teach. I give people choices. Not everyone can do the same thing.
When I do that I usually pull everything left.
Here you go: ua-cam.com/video/sbE-hzTXgNo/v-deo.html
Sometimes I can even hit the ball. Sometimes body and hand no sync together. Hand too fast or slow. So hard!
Then body.
