GPRs are perfect for those who have just enough of a budget for ONE very good rifle. Besides, the Bruce Lee quote, "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times" applies with firearms too. I'd rather master one rifle than be just ok with five.

I’ve cleared numerous rooms with a SAW and an M16a4. A 16 in barrel isn’t hard to maneuver in a structure at all my man. People always make a big deal about having a super short rifle for CQB while we cleared with Machine Guns and 20 in barrels. I believe 16 in barrel is ideal

I get what your saying but I think 16in overall is the most ideal but when you run standard-long suppressors your 16in barrel becomes 22+ inches very quickly mean while my 10.3 inch super duty with a surfire rc2 comes in right at 16in so I think it’s mostly METTC dependent really if I’m picking up something to be a multi too with no suppressor I’ll take a 16in all day but other features might take priority or precedence depending on the mission especially considering 80% of Americans live in urban areas

I can tell you this much.. there is a significant difference between an 11.5 build and a 16 inch build. Especially talking about maneuverability inside and the speed at which you do it. Doing flat range drills most of the day and then going into cqc work is night and day difference between the two builds

Any weapon you're proficient with is relevant, the whole flavor of the week meta thing has always made me roll my eyes.
You can see through out multiple conflicts going on in the middle east and Europe that weapons from wwII are still being actively used today. A man with a 50 year old 30-06 in walmart camo can still be a big problem for someone.

The way I look at it is I like to have a simple red dot rifle with a light for my "cqb" or home defense rifle at 14.5, and then a 14.5 URGI as my GPR. I think everyone should have about two rifles. One set up for close range or night stuff, and one set up that they wouldn't feel too bad pushing into any role but doesn't excel in any dedicated option.

actually working on my GPR now, funny enough as you mentioned its an AR-10 308 @13.5".
Ballistics with 150gr federal fusion are 2560 muzzle velocity. packing 5.56 muzzle energy levels out to 325yrds
with short LOP, coming in at 30.5" OAL
running a vortex red dot/3x mag combo to keep the weight down
pretty heavy cookie cutter muzzle brake but short so trade off on OAL
will be going with a DNT hydra or infitac fmp 13 with a qd mount.
swap off mag for thermal when needed
So far im right at 8lbs 9oz weight as sits.
with just brake and dot on both, its coming in at just 14oz heavier then my 16" 5.56 wich for the added performance and shorter OAL....id say is a worthy trade off for just 14oz's extra
id say its about the best GPR you can trade off for. id say GPR are more then relevant. how often would you really take a shot past 350yrds?? anything out that far is probably not a direct threat, unless its a marksman, but by 350yrds they would have had you down 100+yrds ago before you noticed them and then its a moot point anyways. With something as small as 30" OAL, doing room clearing is easier then a 16" barrel, but you can clear a building and still have serious knock down power for shots a block away when you come out of it.

It looks like almost everyone is on the same page for the GPR. Specialized builds are fun, but 90% of us can’t build more than one or two good rifles with our current budgets. I’ve got my 11.5” “shorty” GPR with a 1-8 LPVO, 12 o’clock mini red dot, and suppressor. Then I have a 16” SPR with a 3-18 optic, 12 o’clock mini red dot, and suppressor. All the controls are identical to keep muscle memory the same. And that is all I can legitimately justify for myself.

    • @ConcreteCowboyx

Yep, GPR’s are more practical. But specialized builds are also very important for specific missions and tasks

Great topic!!! I truly wish I had done things somewhat differently when I started. I have tried to educate people not to follow my path because it gets very expensive without you realizing how much you have in each setup. I do believe a GPR is still relevant because in many cases one rifle can achieve most of the things many people are going to do with it. I have gone through the process of defining a role to each of my rifles, but I could never get down to one. I believe I need to have a rifle available for all members in my household (but again that will require them to be trained and proficient). I could get by with one 16”, one suppressed 11.5”, and a backpack style carry option for local travel (rifle caliber PDW). Unfortunately, I want to get into precision rifle and I have chosen to go the bolt gun route. I have taken training and competed with both my 16” and 11.5” and each had their positives and negatives, but in the end I was glad to have the option… Look forward to your precision journey

I’d say watch what the SF community does. Given the fact they have evolved from the 20” to the 10.3” back to the 14.5” rifle setup says the GPR is relevant. It is the perfect, do it all rifle. That said, most will never “need” a 14.5” barrel rifle, and the standard 16” carbine will do everything anyone needs it to do. I have three!
My main rifle is the LMT R20 RAHE Estonia Reference Rifle. It is equipped with a 14.3” barrel with a muzzle device that extends the length to 16”. It is extremely compact, but still 16”. That rifle is perfectly suited for everything. I also have two 16” rifles made by Radical Firearms. Over all length is just past 16”, but still very light, compact rifles that will do what most need a rifle to do out to 500+ yards.

I was kinda thinking about this, I shot a QP match a few weekends ago, which has the GPR, Practical Precision (PP) and Open classes... I saw a lot more people competing in the PP class vs the GPR class this time. There was one guy on our squad running a 6.5 CM, when you're shooting on time it's a lot of rifle to bring to work. I also have an LR308, and while it's a fantastic long range option, it's never going to compete with 556. Also, since you said you were thinking of going that way, an 18" is going to have a lot less blast than a 16, 16" 308s are just outrageously blasty and would not recommend them. As far as a gun where you might run a suppressor, a 16" SPR is fine there are a lot of good barrel options out there that will still deliver accuracy in the GPR/SPR role.
I should probably just go to bed instead of making this comment longer. Good vid, I like what you've been doing.

It's nice and all to have hyper-specialized builds, but the thing to note is that mission dictates gear.
... That's a quote that doesn't really apply to civilians because let's face it, we have zero clue what awaits us and what the "mission" actually is. We're not getting commands from some supreme overlord that can tell us everything we will do at what specific time where and when.
As a result, I went with a 16" GPR with a Vortex Razor HD Gen II-E for my optic of choice. It's a rifle for whatever comes up. I'm not looking to be some CQB God who can own any and every house in a 50 mile radius during some apocalyptic situation who only EVER engages in rooms and inside buildings (which is fantasy), and I'm not looking to engage out to 1,000 yards (which is largely a waste of ammo that could be allocated to targets near by). I was just looking for a rifle that could do any realistic situation good enough, and the GPR fills that role perfectly.

Only thing I have that's "general purpose" is the lower receiver. I have different uppers set up for different things. Multiple uppers costs more than just 1 rig, but most of us go down the AR rabbit hole and spend more $$ anyway. In addition, it's highly doubtful that us civilians will be in a situation where we wouldn't have time to swap uppers for the task at hand...if so, a task specific AR will be the least concern. That's been my take on it anyway.

All depends on the scenario. An opposing force coming towards your town calls for different actions than you trying to survive for 8 months in a SHTF scenario. In the latter example, you might be able to link up with family, friends, and other like minded individuals. And each day’s “mission” might call for a different upper. It’s a huge what if game that will never have the right answer haha. But what’s most important is that you’re equipped

Once you start getting into Match grade ammunitions, which you will want for ultimate precision, the price difference between the two is negligible. 6mm ARC has definitely caught my eye though, the performance is pretty crazy and being compatible with small-frame platforms is a big plus.

Since trex arms specs that mount for an rmr, and because holosun uses a 90 degree countersunk head, the 82 degree "longer" screws that the mount came with dont really fit my holosun and i cant find the screws anywhere to match the mount up.

a few yes, shorter package and longer barrel, but trade offs. Generaly speaking no bullpups have the same acuracy levels, most are 1.5-2 MOA at best ive seen. so longer 3-400yrd shots would be less acurate. plus ergonomics are diffrent and not for everyone. personally, im waiting for a good 16" 308 bullpup to come out and id defiantly scope it up and build it as a GPR.

It’s not so much the rifle or the tool. It’s the caliber and the ranges you can expect to get it from it. For a GPR my go to is a red dot magnifier combo. 18” 5.56 is solid. 16” is as short as I personally would like to see. I’m looking for a maximum terminal ballistics out to 500 yards max. 300 yards is that sweet spot. M193 is what I like to shoot. So of course my choice is tailored around that. It’s all a factor including weight when it comes to GPR. Do as much as you can because you’re carrying the limitations of those around you.

A "Gordon" rifle is still really good set up 30+ years later.
For a modern build a 16, mid length with A5 buffer and a red dot/3x prism is about as much of a "Goldie locks" gun as you can get.

While I agree with the premise of the video I do not agree with the statement that ballistics from a 14.5” and 16” barrel are similar. A 14.5” is a 300 yard gun while a 16” barrel is a 500 yard gun, 600 yards if you’re using 77 grain from Black Hills. It’s my opinion a GP rifle in 5.56 should have 16” barrel. Short enough to be maneuverable but long enough to reach out when needed.

    • @ConcreteCowboyx
      @ConcreteCowboyx  Місяць тому

All comes down to your testing. With my 77 grain I get minimal velocity differences and I get very similar outputs on my ballistic calculator out to 500. Ammo plays a big role so you’ll need to experiment with your specific setup. But for me and a few of the guys I shoot with, we don’t lose an astronomical amount of performance going down from a 16” to a 14.5” pin and welded.

A rifle is a rifle and it is designed to do what you need it to do. Sure there are better cartridge, this is true. However, I am faster and have more precise than most because I know my rifle inside in out. I never understood having a more than one rifle for multiple situations, you just need one to do it's job. There's a strong argument that longer barrels and the added velocity they offer will be necessary in the next American conflict.
The argument goes (over simplified of course) that for now we have military and law enforcement protection. So any length AR works.
As soon as that changes you find yourself where the people hunting you will likely be wearing armor and badges.
With that in mind, armor starts to fail at somewhere between 2900 and 3250 feet per second; depending on the quality of the armor. A 14.5 will be pushing somewhere around 2750. Add approximately 50fps per inch thereafter.
Add to this the evolving threat of drones. No, not the bird like drones that are perfect for shotguns...think robot dogs or robot people. It's already here. For these threats you will need to puncture the light armor protecting the battery or processor.
      Choose accordingly,
      Phil
