    I am thinking about starting this build. Could someone point out the quality of the produced filament? Will I need to dry the plastic before working it or to mix it with new pellets?

    • @FAST-GROUP
      @FAST-GROUP  4 роки тому +2

      See paper for diameter +/- in general pretty good. Depending on the plastic source you may need to dry it. In general this is a good idea anyway unless you know your source material. You do not need to mix in new pellets. In general you can go 5x recycles before seeing substantial mechanical property reductions - see U. Lorraine study on PLA cycles.

      Yes PETG, PC, ABS,HDPE, PLA etc -- pretty much any of the normal 3D printing materials....see PET comment above.

    This is a very interesting project to get filament out of garbage, but there is a big problem: To get pellets for this machine, you will need a shredder to get the small particles out of the large plastic parts. This machine will cost and weigh like an airbus. And it will produce the same noise.

    • @FAST-GROUP
      @FAST-GROUP  4 місяці тому +1

      We have successfully used a papershredder -- one of the beefier ones that can cut CDs. This works but is not a good long term solution. You are right to go big scale you need something like this open source waste plastic granulator www.appropedia.org/Open_Source_Waste_Plastic_Granulator

    I am preparing the shopping list for this project and I noticed that the wood drill bit is 5/8 inch (around 15.9 mm) while the barrel is 1/2 inch (12.7 mm). This does not fit, so i double checked with the STP-files from the project repository. I measure 12.6 mm for the drill bit, which would be around 1/2 inch instead of 5/8 inch. The barrel inside diameter is 13.8 mm in the STP, which roughly translates to 35/64 inch instead of 1/2 inch. Nothing here seems to match. Can someone clarify this? Some people here seem to have built this project. Maybe I understood something wrong? I am not used to these american units.

    I’m looking to use PET regrind from plastic bottles. Is this machine suitable?

    • @FAST-GROUP
      @FAST-GROUP  4 місяці тому +1

      You could probably do it-- but the big challenge with PET is it has to be bone dry and stay that way while thermally processing -- we have had better luck with FGF/FPF printing of PET waste - see what we did with full PET bottle regrind (that has 10% HDPE from the caps included) - warning this is not a great material to work with: www.appropedia.org/Multi-material_distributed_recycling_via_material_extrusion:_recycled_high_density_polyethylene_and_poly_(ethylene_terephthalate)_mixture

    • @FAST-GROUP
      @FAST-GROUP  Рік тому +1

      You dont need to make an exact replica -- I would look for a pipe and auger available at the local hardware store that fit close without touching and build everything around that.

    can we use grind plastic bottles as an input?

    • @FAST-GROUP
      @FAST-GROUP  Рік тому +1

      Yes - how hard it is depends on the plastic type. Most water bottles are PET - which happens to be one of the hardest. PET needs to be dry and you need to ensure it doesnt absorb water or it will be a mess. We have had better luck direct printing PET via FGF - www.appropedia.org/Towards_Distributed_Recycling_with_Additive_Manufacturing_of_PET_Flake_Feedstocks

    Hello sir,
    We are currently doing the same project based on your paper and we are facing a problem in the arduino coding and arduino library. We are getting accelstepper library errors. It couldn't compile for arduino mega 2560. Please provide me a solution. Im doing this for my final year project. help me out
    thank you in advance.

    • @FAST-GROUP
      @FAST-GROUP  5 років тому +7

      We just double checked -- and are able to compile the code and upload it to Arduino board without errors. The steps:
      1. In Arduino IDE go Tools>>Board>>Arduino/Genuino Mega or Mega 2560 (RAMPS 1.4 works with Arduino Mega, not UNO).
      2. Install AccelStepper library: Tools>>Manage Libraries>>Search for "AccelStepper" in the search field>>Install "AccelStepper" by Mike McCauley.
      3. Make sure that the library was installed: go to C:/Program Files/Arduino/libraries/... If the AccelStepper folder is missing, create AccelStepper folder and copy AccelStepper.cpp and AccelStepper.h files there.
      4. Add AccelStepper library to the sketch: Sketch>>Include Library>>AccelStepper.
      5. Remove the AccelStepper.cpp and AccelStepper.h files from the sketch folder, if any.
      6. Make sure you do not have #include "AccelStepper.h" or #include "AccelStepper.cpp" in your .ino sketch code. At the beginning of the .ino sketch should be the following lines:
      --
      #include
      #include
      #include
      #include
      --
      7. Verify the sketch (Ctrl+R) and upload it (Ctrl+U) to the board.
      Hope this will help.
      Best of luck!

      first thank you and your team for the work and time you put into realizing and sharing this project. I'm building the machine atm for another project at my university and the company I work at.
