  • Without any stress or difficulty, Scotto is once again Mimi, drifting away silently. Yes, this is not in an opera house or projected, but is there anyone today who could be as compelling as Renata? A genuis!

And it all comes so naturally to her. She becomes the role, and always has. Adoro Cotto!

Fantastic Scotto! Even here, long after her retirement, she can break your heart with just a few final words of Mimi. I saw her many times at the Met: sometimes she was great (Suor Angelica, Desdemona, Luisa Miller, Butterfly), sometimes she wasn't so great (Norma).

Although I am by no means a Scotto fan, I find this just wonderful and moving, (and still a lovely tone on those middle Abs!), always her eye on the drama and the mood. I often disagreed with her choices, but there is no-one on the stage today who THINKS about these roles like this. Brava!

@robertdonkers--I was referring to Angela Gheorghiu ("her") and not Mme. Scotto.

Yet Mme. Gheorghiu felt she had nothing to learn from rehearsals with this true "diva" (the Chicago incident)!

...and who remembers now, 12 years after, who was the Mme. Gheorghiu? :)

I think her insight into opera is incredible. It's too bad her directing career wasn't more successful.

+Arnaldo carpio Yes she did....like Callas (without having the outstanding means of Callas) she was so true to the music, so true to the text, so immerged in the characters she portrayed plus beeing a wonderful actress....

I'm sorry to tell you -- look at many of Scotto's old interviews -- she hated Callas and the Callas-worshippers!

I enjoyed her Adriana Lecourvreur, but there was a lot of irony in her singing "Io son L'UMILE ancella." Her claim that she was more well-known than Dame Joan Sutherland indicate either total ignorance of opera history or megalomania. Remember she also remarked when she was fired from Lyric Opera of Chicago, that only then did people realize there was an opera company in Chicago. Again, total ignorance of opera performance history or megalomania. I wish her well, however.

ploplisphilin FWIW, both Sutherland and Bonynge greatly admired Scotto, and they said so in several interviews. Of course Sutherland had the greater voice, but the famous husband/wife team said that Scotto really understood the bel canto tradition in her soul.

@ploplisphilin Because she thinks she´s a Diva and she´s damn far away of even pronouncing it right iin her own mouth. She has a nice voice but it´s just that. Nothing spectacular. I would like to know what exactly she did to for Solti and others to help her come into stardom. Who knows??? ... hmmm!
