Brava Scotto !
Fantastic, absolutely fantastic. Good coloratura, just the right amount of dark acid and "bite" in the voice, excellent diction.Together with Caballe, the best rendition of this very difficult final scene. Aliberti and Kabaivanska come a close second, Fleming butchers this scene and does not even enter the discussion.
Thanks for your comment ! Indeed Scotto and Bellini at their best! I have this on an old tape but I think this recording (as well as her Straniera in Venice 4 years later) have been commercialyy reedited.
I wish I could learn how to upload on UA-cam. As good as this is, the performance captured at La Fenice on Opera D'Oro finds Scotto in even more spectacular voice. Her final C# is absolutely spot on. The whole opera is better on the Opera D'Oro Fenice performance because Scotto is, in every way, superior. Read the review in Opera News by Ira Siff where he compare that Straniera to this one!
Infatti dove sono fra tutte queste cantanti d'oggi chi sanno "cantare" una vera come la Scotto, prendendo rischi per difendere la sua arte e farci vibrare ? Questo é il Bel Canto !!
I shall have a look then. Searched on OS but there is the 70s recording. I much prefer Renata in the 60s. She could really work magic in Bellini and Donizetti. Do you like her Giulietta?
+jovi1715 Thanks a lot for your comment. Honestly I am not sure about the very date of this performance besides this recording ( I have this on tape and it has probably been remastered since then..) was in 1968. Somewhere one of the major Bellini’s print in this aria and somewhere what a rendition where Madame Scotto in this part, as in many, where will reign forever.
+italianoperafan This performance of Scotto is part of History of Music, and I fear that her rendition of this role will remain unmatched. It is true that your recording, although the quite noticeable background noise, it's of exceptional good quality. I listened to your excerpts of this opera many times through years but just now I realized that your source looks really different from others, not only in terms of noise, but also because in your tape we can hear the "suggeritore" and also the conductor speaking (notice also when Sanzogno says "vai!" at 8:53). That's why I was guessing that your source, perhaps, it's from another performance... all the LP and CD state to contain that from 10th December.
@philipc67 I agree with everything you mention... and Fleming butchers a lot of bel canto.. primarily with her horrible musicality, and choices.. trying to interject jazzy singing, in a mileu.. not well suited to it. Fleming has a remarkable voice, but she really aggravates me in interpreting Bellini.
I couldn't agree with you more about Fleming - magnificent voice - but simply NOT given to the bel canto style. In the midst of a cadenza, all of a sudden she starts crooning.... For the life of me I don't understand it.

Complimenti a Renata Scotto.
Rest in peace Renata !
Malgrés un final à l'arraché (les deux derniers aigus lui coutent!), une prestation hautement musicale et dramatiquement trés juste... Impressionnant!

Bravissima...

Maravillosa!!!

It's available on a boxed set of 2 CDs on Myto records: 2 MCD 023.265
The chorus at 3:16 is simply heavenly!
La Straniera di Bellini meriterebbe di essere più rappresentata!
Nessuna riesce più a cantare bene un ruolo come quello di Alaide oggi. Non ci sono più soprani preparati.
Here we go again comparing two great sopranos......Both have their personal approach adn technique.

Is this 10/12/1968 or another performance?

CATANIA è VINCENZO BELLINI!!NON DIMENTICANDO VERGA!
Brilliant! I love her very much. Where can I get the recording?
Although Caballe's rendition is perhaps more perfect vocally, I prefer Scotto for its passion and drama and vocal power at the same time.
italian music sung idiomatically by a first rate italian singer. doesnt get any better.
