I Just discovered this channel and I'm blown away. What you guys doing is so spectacular is just perfect. You're doing really something special. You're connecting to mother earth the true way. Traveling the seas like you're doing it's outstandingly pure. I'm from the Caribbean and dream of getting a boat and cover the islands. Keep fulfilling the dream. 👍🏾 Much love from Puerto Rico. 🇵🇷
AWESOME. Franny was saying the solution about grinding the bolt with a grinder and then JORDAN did it. Jordan, you rock! Franny said Jordan does not disappoint. He is so SMART! Heidi
Jesus H Christmas...what a massive job...I can just feel your trepidation pulling everything apart, but just imagine how relieved and confident you’ll be when you have everything back together and you KNOW it’s going to be good to go for your Pacific Crossing. The peace of mind is worth all the anxiety.
Wow! That is some task guys , you are both working so had but th effort will be worth it I am sure , I am getting nervous for your impending ocean crossing .🌹🌹🌹🌹👍👍👍🤞🤞🤞
I just enjoy the heck out of seeing how you cope and validate each other. I don’t know how much of real life is edited away, but I can only imagine that you are real people with real problems and real reactions. Hats off to to a wonderful couple.
Amazing crew. Everyone is falling in love with Desiree and developing respect and admiration for Jordan. Great Team effort exemplifying true grit, gusto and Love of Life!
You two are doing wonderfully. Keep it up and don’t get down. Take your time as the Pacific is large. You will be fine because you have both become very good sailors how are properly prepared. Love what you are doing!
watching you both is so much fun. As i have stated before im suffering from kidney failure stage 5 now; seeing yall makes me remember being 20 years younger at your age an being so in love ! It is wonderful to have a best buddy in life. i always get excited to see that yall have posted! Cool music in your video. Please live by your convictions and love everyone as much as possible. Life is truly what you make of it! Enjoy i love you both like family! Art in W. Tennessee
Another excellent video. Thank you for providing us with your inner feelings and concerns. Can't wait to see the outcome of your mast project and prep for the crossing. Cuidensen mucho, Buds!
Nice video,pb is great got stubborn fasteners for sure! Jordan sometimes you can put your best screwdriver in the screw and hit it few times pretty hard and the screw will come out. You did the right thing just cutting a slot in that old screw. What made it come out was it got hot when you cut it and the PB blaster did its job.On the dropping ball bearings bet magnet won’t stick to those stainless balls.🥴Y’all still have one of the best sailing blogs no matter what the numbers say, keep doing what you’re doing👍
Deck stepped masts? Good for you. More room below with compression posts. You guys are an awesome team. Crossing the Pacific is no joke. Weeks and weeks, not days, with no land in sight. Not only Atticus needs to be ready, but you guys as well. Having a deadline is good, but "more gooder" to allow for the deadline to come and go, for safety sake and preparedness. If there's EVER trouble in paradise and you guys think about breaking up, you may want to review the entire Project Atticus channel and say "WTF are we thinking about". You guys are just a too well oil teamwork machine. And yes, as noted before, ball bearing not in a caged race require a magnet not too loose your balls, and not just two. :) and most likely you'll have to replace a few. I know it's never cool in Panama, more like less humidity now, so be safe and stay hydrated. Best wishes!
Congratulations to a hard day done and over. You guys weren't kidding when you said it was alot of work rigging down.. Great video, thanks for sharing!
After spending 42 years in a Glass Plant as a Moldmaker ( high priced machinist ) we battled stripped screws constantly. We used different solutions depending on the problem. Sometime just grinding a slot and some oil worked but because we were dealing with lots of different metals and high heat on the equipment making the bottles we found some heat from a torch worked also we drilled and used easy outs. We also had a cool bit that sears used to make that would grab the screw with carbide and turn it out. We always replaced screws with allen headed screws and used high temp never seize. Any port in the storm so to speak( Ha ! )
Ahhhhh....... another project started that just means that much closer to being ready for passage. Looking forward to the upcoming project videos for getting the boat ready for the crossing. Until our adventures cross, fair winds and full sails. Jack and Billie
Great job D&J on removing the mast for maintenance. It was the first time I had seen this on a sailing YT channel. Looking forward to seeing what you have in store for the next episode. I enjoyed the video. Thanks!
Great job on the stuck screw. I was thinking you might have to drill it out, but grinding the slot worked great. It held my attention--"yes, it's turning! Thank goodness".
That's what we do every winter season in far North Germany. Our Mast has 250 kg's or 550 lbs. It is important to check all the Fittings and mountings regulary.Fair windsTom
"Flying balls" LOL not a good thing ! Just remember its easier coming down than putting it back up!! Great episode guys. Fair winds and following seas Atticus!
Recently came across your channel and holy crap am i hyped about the timing! I mean finding ya'll earlier would have been nice but I'm sooo looking forward to following the journey across the pacific as it's uploaded! Thank you guys for the amazing content from someone land locked but obsessed with sailing and the sea in general. Cheers
As a helicopter mechanic in the U.S. Army, the step you did with the screw is kind of what we would do, but the moment the phillips screwdrivers tries to slip out of the head, STOP! Mix up a little abrasive cleaner (Comet, Ajax) with a drop of water/saliva and put on the tip of your bit and either the impact driver or a brace bit to remove it then. A hacksaw blade works to cut the slot too. Good Job on removal, it can be an art that some people don't have the patience to do!
Bout time you were rockin some SRV! (Stevie Ray Vaughan) Great idea to slot the screw head!!! I use a blow torch to loosen up hard cases, but the Aluminum mast may not take to kindly to the direct heat. You always find a way my friend. Looking forward to the Pacific chapter........Bossman
I just found your channel and I'm captivated! I plan on watching all of your videos from the beginning. lol. I have four kids so it'll be awhile until I can get my own boat. Until then I'll live through your videos. Thanks for sharing your experience and be safe out there!
Hey guys I have a serious problem with your vlog! I discovered it couple weeks ago and I’ve binge watched every episode and now I can’t watch normal crappy TV.. always brings a smile or a tear of respect and admiration, vicariously loving every minute of it!! Just wondering what your Pacific Crossing plans are are you planning to do the milk run ? How longlong do you plan to stay once you cross ?Might make an interesting vlog.. maybe it’s a surprise and I’ll just have to patiently wait week by week watching all the great adventure unfold..THANKS for all the fun adventure ..you guys are my heroes
Awesome to hear you're enjoying our videos!! Thank you so much for watching. Sorry we ruined TV for you haha. Here's a link to our last live stream where we talk a little bit about our plans: ua-cam.com/video/llwa0zL5HTs/v-deo.html
My go to is carbide drill bits. Spray blaster or drip oil while drilling through the head to remove it from the shank of the screw. Lube is crucial. Also tapping with a drift helps loosen corrosion.
On tough screws like that, before you start tweaking on them, yes the PB is a good choice, but also sticking a screw driver in there and whacking it a few times with a hammer will often free em up.
So much but yous did it.. Don't cry be happy ~~ Chill, we don't care how much you hurt, sweat, complain or forget stuff.. your on a mission that will reward you after your done .. carry on ~
Make flat head with a grinder when the bolt is stuck? ... that is genius my friend. That what you make the big bucks...thank you for sharing... hood luck to you and your beautiful lady
Awesome episode! Great job with getting the masts off, and a great group of people helping you do it. You guys always leave me laughing with the repertoire in the last few seconds of the vlog.
I have always been intrigued about sailing but when I watch this I realize there is much more than I expected plus having to lear how to sail WOW but love watching you guys be safe 🙂
The grinder drove heat into the screw which helped you greatly, you sir need a small propane blowtorch for such jobs. That is the difference between coming out or not at times, or even just easier!
There is a product called “tefgel”. Which will prevent electrolysis between dissimilar metals. It works great for steel fasteners in aluminum spars. I believe they sell it at west marine. Also get a set of easy out screw removers
There is such a thing as a handheld impact driver with exchangeable screw bits. It is held in the screw head and twisted in the correct directiona nd then the end is struck with a hammer. The downward force applies torque to the bit at the same time the force holds the bit into the screw head. It isn't foolproof but it has never failed me as longs as I use it first and not wait until the head gets stripped. This episode reminded me of taking my Jeanneau 34' from NYC to the Great Lakes through the Erie Canal. I had to take my mast down at Albany and carry it on top the whole way. The yard had a "self-help crane" for use by the boaters for mast removal. It looked like a 20' flagpole hinged at midpoint in an 8' high bracket.
Being in Ontario Canada, we store our boat on the hard for winter and pull the mast everyday year. It gets easier on the stress levels after a while. But it never completely goes away....
When you have a Phillips head screw that feels like its " caming out " (which means the screw head is deforming untill it no longer matches the profile of the bit and starts to slip) you can dip your phillips bit tip in valve grinding compound and go back to giving her hell with the impact..... It will save you from having to get out the dremmel and sloting the screw as the compound will fill in the gap between the bit and screw and give it 5x the " traction " Just a little tip from a 25+ year aircraft heavy overhaul mechanic who deals with thousands of stuck screws a year.... For next time and good sailing.
Just a though . Put a one way valve on your hull through so when your healed over water does not back flow in to your boat. I have used a clear spring loaded type that is cleanable on industrial low pressure projects such as sump pumps and fluid transfer. I do not know if they are manufactured any more but any pvc valve should work with salt water.
Hey guys, I was just thinking you might be able to wire up quick disconnect fittings for the Mast wiring in the future and just make sure there's always a little bit of Dielectric grease in there to make everything easier and if it fails you can always cut it out and splice it back together
Your in my prayers for a quick and easy fix, as they say one day at a time, I know you 2 will get thru this, you guys don't strike me as quitters and it seems like the harder things are you two are more determined and your dreams won't be denied, not when you've come this far on $ 2000 ,that there is something not many can do or attempt, huge step taken and being fulfilled, TAKE care and may our Lord bless you with safe waters and winds for sailing the 7 seas....
impact drill/driver requires special bits. Usually tip is dark gray or you can get really hard ones that are all gray. I got mine at Lowes. Most common Phillips screw is p2, but not always. Make sure it is right one for your screw- if not-- dont use it. when the tip "starts" to slip- replace it. And that hammer/driver you can get at Harborfreight will work sometimes. They are great for motorcycles as all screws on bikes are soft. I think it is the jar of the hammer that breaks the corrosion inside and then the screw will loosen enough to turn, so if you ever find a metal handle screw driver that you can hit with a hammer- get it.
I have had great success with tefgel, a bit expensive, I think about $15 foot a one ounce tube but I’ve had the same tune for years. It really works well between aluminum and stainless
Look into getting an impact screwdriver. They are under $10 at harbor freight. All you do is put the correct head on it, hold it up to the head of the screw (or bolt head) give it a hit with a hammer and the impact turns the screw (or bolt). It's a lifesaver for stuck hardware.
Hi couple! Have ya'll thought about buying a 12v Ham radio? They are cheap, a couple hundred, simple to install and able to talk on a clear day for thousands of miles. Good way to pass time & safety, as far as retriving the weather information. There are a lot of people who love talking on them and would be able to assit you to pass along information or obtain information for you! Just a though, its a one time installation fee and no monthly fee.
You did a very good job of removing the screw, the dissimilar metals corrosion happens a lot with the steel in the aluminum a minor suggestion is maybe anti-seize if this part is removed occasionally another suggestion that you’ve already had suggested is to pre-packing the bearings with Grease will also help keep them in place I know you do not have room for multiple cans of lubricant and also availability might be hard
Feel your pain i am in a cheap club up the river clyde in 🏴 but have to lower my mast to get under the bridges and go up the river on a high tide but hey £120 a year under cover you can't complain. Have read it put's more wear on my rigging cause i loosen then re-tension who had guessed! Least you can check all your rigging and replace halyards easily 👍🏴⛵
The two of you make the best couple to watch and your real team work. Job well done and you both are beautiful people!
😍 thanks Wayne!
Nice story telling and video capture guys. Sail safe. Ant, Cid & the Pooch crew.
A great boat work video without being a boring boat work video... You pulled a nice trick here! Fair winds!

When you put it together and there are some pieces extra, don't worry, you made the whole thing lighter and in doing so, better.
Great video guys, thanks for including us in the dismantling of Atticus

I Love yalls chemistry together, It shows in the video you complete each other. ❤️
i love the way you guys make tough times look good. such a nice couple. Great positive image for the USA.
Oh buddies. Always enjoy y'alls videos. Stay safe homies.. You need to get a good set of easy outs for stripped screws and bolts bud.
OMG 😱 guys. This was over-the-top !! What a rush taking the boat you put together just a few years ago. B.R.A.V.O.
Awesome job. Congrats😎👏👏👏👏
Always keep ez-outs on the boat guys. Great video. Looking forward to more.

BadgerDog wow ain’t that the truth
I just loved your chemistry and team work, I had to push the subscriber button and give u thumps up.

I love the fact that you take us along on your journey, not just the touring but the maintenance. Love it. Working on becoming a patreon. :)
Great job D&J on removing the mast for maintenance. It was the first time I had seen this on a sailing YT channel. Looking forward to seeing what you have in store for the next episode. I enjoyed the video. Thanks!
Great video! Looks like a bunch of work ahead. Looking forward to seeing the progress.
Thank you for the videos!!

Meant to say you are both working Hard !
A lot of work but you are doing the right thing, can't shortcut preparing the boat for the next part of the trip...
True that!! Thanks for the encouragement!! ⛵😁
Nice episode and love the music. You both are so awesome.
🤗 thanks Joe!
loved your choise of music, looking forward to your sailing again as I know you are, happy sails
Great job on the stuck screw. I was thinking you might have to drill it out, but grinding the slot worked great. It held my attention--"yes, it's turning! Thank goodness".
Oh my, that is a lot of work. You definitely will know your boat intimately. Good job.⛵😀

Wow, quite the project. Been to Bocas many times from when we lived in Puerto Viejo CR
Wow buddies! It's happening! 👍❤

"We're destroying the boat." Love the honesty. Gotta break some eggs to make an omelet!!
Thank you ! Thank you for sharing .
My go to is carbide drill bits. Spray blaster or drip oil while drilling through the head to remove it from the shank of the screw. Lube is crucial. Also tapping with a drift helps loosen corrosion.
Phillips screws do strip easily. You might try switching to a Torx head (star) screw. (Just my $0.02). You guys are the best!
And if the Torx head strips, you can use an Allen (hex) key on it.
Keep it up guys, just know is the beginning of a glorious end....hang-in there...
I’m laughing but feeling your pain at the same time. On the hard for several months with several similar projects on my old Vagabond 42.
Awesome job buds! Great job editing out the frustrating moments! 😉 See y'all next later today on the podcast.
Tony & Susan here, Love to watch suffrage , HaHa. Safe travels
haha, the ending. "I know I don´t!" xD

You two are the hardest working sailors of all the youtube channels.
Go check out Sail Life. He's rebuilt Athena over three years, and is probably only about halfway done.
Thanks for the shout out! i adore the both of you!!!!!
Desiray is a great partener!!!
I have always been intrigued about sailing but when I watch this I realize there is much more than I expected plus having to lear how to sail WOW but love watching you guys be safe 🙂
Wow thanks for responding didn’t expect that gonna keep watching 🙂
Good job! You, both have sooo much patience!
great job Jordan!!! you're the Man!!!
The grinder drove heat into the screw which helped you greatly, you sir need a small propane blowtorch for such jobs. That is the difference between coming out or not at times, or even just easier!
I liked the old man, "Are you happy"?
There is a product called “tefgel”. Which will prevent electrolysis between dissimilar metals. It works great for steel fasteners in aluminum spars. I believe they sell it at west marine. Also get a set of easy out screw removers
zinc-based anti-seize. That's all they need really. What's the over/under on him getting a copper-based one and using it? :)
Get a thing of that blue thread locker for your screws. The stuff is great cause it keeps the screws from coming loose and it acts as anti seize.
Invest in a hand impact driver. It won't strip screws. If you have stuck screws on your outboard, it works great too.
Another great episode! Keep'em coming.!
When you have a Phillips head screw that feels like its " caming out " (which means the screw head is deforming untill it no longer matches the profile of the bit and starts to slip) you can dip your phillips bit tip in valve grinding compound and go back to giving her hell with the impact..... It will save you from having to get out the dremmel and sloting the screw as the compound will fill in the gap between the bit and screw and give it 5x the " traction "
Just a little tip from a 25+ year aircraft heavy overhaul mechanic who deals with thousands of stuck screws a year....
For next time and good sailing.
You guys got this ! I believe in you, oh yeah it was a year ago lol.
Don't forget to have some fun... your still living our dream :)
When you have screws left over . . . . they are called "pocket screws". They go in your pocket !
Thanks Clifton! This is so encouraging to read! You're the best and thanks for watching our videos!
impact drill/driver requires special bits.
Get yourself some "Kroil". The stuff really works. Worth the price
Great video!
4 steps forward ,2 steps back, keep going.
Will the projects ever end? Keep plugging away. Great job. 👍👍👍
I have had great success with tefgel, a bit expensive, I think about $15 foot a one ounce tube but I’ve had the same tune for years. It really works well between aluminum and stainless
Love your project vids guys keep it up 🤙🇦🇺
You guys are great. More please
You might look at a hand impact driver (the type driven with a hammer) for loosening those stuck screws.
Look into getting an impact screwdriver. They are under $10 at harbor freight. All you do is put the correct head on it, hold it up to the head of the screw (or bolt head) give it a hit with a hammer and the impact turns the screw (or bolt). It's a lifesaver for stuck hardware.
laughing at your height! as a tall man myself... the mast carry with you on the shoulder and the crew military pressing... Story of my life. cheers.
😂
I think you have found your next boat' Not perfect but it is the best compromise.
I’ve used easy outs for SS screws with good success.. nice to keep a set for just such a emergency. Well played with the slot option thou.
I sure hope you took pictures of how it goes together LOL
Feel your pain i am in a cheap club up the river clyde in 🏴 but have to lower my mast to get under the bridges and go up the river on a high tide but hey £120 a year under cover you can't complain. Have read it put's more wear on my rigging cause i loosen then re-tension who had guessed! Least you can check all your rigging and replace halyards easily 👍🏴⛵
BTW... you gotta LOVE the PB Blaster with capillary action !!
