I was 45 years old when I discovered this video and restored heating to my home! Thank you for posting it! You’re right, it may not benefit everyone but it will help someone when they really need it and that was me today! Thank you!!
Hi. Thanks for your video! I just moved into a new property and all of our radiators have two lockshield valves which were fitted with your shown cap with the screw. How can I turn some of them off, because they are all going hot when I turn on the central heating panel on my boiler. But I don’t want to have it warm in the bedroom. Can I remove the cap, find out by heating and checking which side gets hot first and turn this one down ? Many thanks for your help! Cheers!
Another good video should mention about those valves with a gland nut ie those that tend to leak just after you have adjusted them and i always put a bit of oil on the stem before tightening the nut down. I have the same yellow (shifter) spanner very handy size. Happy New Year to and misses
Why is it that so often, decorative in-line or angled valves are sold in pairs where both valves are hand manipulative? Wheel-head type. I've lost count of the times I've been called out or called back to rebalance a system coz someone has opened both valves up and beggared the balancing up. I now take a screwdriver to the spline grooves in the cover cap and wreck them on the balancing side. Pop a plop of silicone on so that it pops back on and doesn't fall off, but can't be turned without pliers.
Hi Al. A video idea for you as I'd love your opinion and I know you like the odd gadget. Smart thermostatic valves. I'm thinking of investing in them to zone the heating in the house. If you've any opinion on them it'd be great to hear!
Great video Al. I have a radiator that has lock shields both ends, when it comes to balancing the rads, which side do you close / open to balance of both sides are lockshielsd. Thanks
Great video! I have the numbered valve in my flat but my issue is that no matter which setting I turn it to for heat, it only sometimes turns on and other times it does nothing. I can't figure out why it doesn't turn on each time :(
The plastic knows are missing from my rads i never know what's on or off my sons rad does not work just yesterday I was trying to figure this out thank you.
I tightened one of my Lockshild Valves with an Allen Key. The nut went down, I assume I was closing it off a bit and noticed the allen key was wet. Is this normal for these to leak when being turned? I dried it out & turned it back to be safe, no more water coming out.
Hi Dereton! I have one radiator in my house that won’t turn on. It’s been bled, is turned on but still the radiator is stone cold all over. Also the pipes coming through the floor to both the thermostat valve and lockshield valve are stone cold. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated (especially my mum as it’s her bedroom 😅)? Not sure to think blocked pipe or whether lockshield valves need balancing perhaps? Thanks again for your kind, educational videos 👍
@@dereton33 Hi Al! Really sorry to pester 😅 I’ve had a dabble at trying to balance my system to no avail, but I’m thankful to you for teaching me what a lockshield valve even was and how they work 👍 I’m now pondering whether the pin in the trv thermostatic valve is trapped in/shut 🤷🏼♂️ I was going to have a dabble removing the thermostatic radiator valve head but obviously don’t want to be removing something I shouldn’t be 😅 Feeling that my valves are abit older and not just simple screw collar kind have you ever known thermostatic radiator valves having a little grub key to remove before screwing the collar off? Thankyou for everything you do and I shall be making a donation through your website soon! 🙌

Welcome aboard!
Thanks you for this video. I've recently moved to the UK and this has helped so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for helping us out. We gain some knowledge here ❤❤
You bet!
it's something so small and silly, but that you for teaching those who weren't taught these things ❤
No problem molly
That was so useful as I didn’t know which valve was which and my thermostat valves are missing. Thank you
You're welcome!

Take off one of the caps it does not matter which one and turn it off using a small spanner or plyers.
@@dereton33 many thanks for your quick reply 💪

Ha ha that`s the way Paul.
My cap was broken so I got a pair of pliers but it’s super stiff and can’t turn. Any suggestions?
A small spanner for more leverage.

what if there is lock shields on both sides please
You can take one of the caps off and turn it with pliers but this one, will be your bypass radiator and is supposed to be on all the time.
what you do if it starts to leak from top from the small nut
Tighten it up or repack it
Your a mine of information 👍👍🍺
