      @@thekansan8683 I think that all of the ships in the same class do look the same unless they have some refits (like the original USS Enterprise). With the California Class, they do have a color stripe on the Saucer Section to distinguish their function (Yellow - Operations, Blue - Medical and Science, and Red - Admin and Diplomacy). That is in keeping with its type of Starship, basically a workhorse.

    • @Solitaire001
      @Solitaire001 2 місяці тому +3

      @@natemadill2390 From what I understand, although the California Class ships are designated for certain functions, they can be called in to handle other tasks too. As an example, the Cerritos has done tasks that would fall under the purview of Admin and Diplomacy (Red), such as escorting the Diplomats from Betazed.
      I'm guessing that the ships are equipped based on their primary designated function. A Science and Medical Ship would have more specialized equipment for that function, while an Admin and Diplomacy Ship would have upgraded quarters and more security communications.

    Gotta love how Boilmer doesn’t blame the command deck crew for all the shenanigans they get up to but for just how insane the universe they live in constantly throws random curveballs at them that there’s no way to be fully prepared for

      I absolutely love this scene. Boimler understands that, per Janeway, "weird is part of the job" and it's often frustrating, but at the end of the day he 100% believes in Starfleet's ideals and trusts the bridge crew to do their job. Amidst the goofy references, it's a heartwarming reconstruction of the Trek universe I adore!

      It'd be like blaming the Men in Black for every alien threat they don't know about, or blaming BSAA for every BOW experiment they didn't stop. The universe is a chaotic place, and even Batman doesn't know how respond to every scenario right off the bat.
      Sure, Mariner and her crew are in an era where people are already rather numb to the whole "bizarro universe full of weirdoes" reality, but even THEY get caught off guard every now and then. They just got really good at adapting, which is the whole point of evolution after all.

      Personally, I find this a hilariously textbook example of why Star Trek is such an unpleasant place to live😂. Nothing he said here is wrong or false. In every iteration of Star Trek, situations tend to suddenly go crazy and wrong with no time to warn the lower decks. It's just "Red Alert, hope you don't get sucked out through a hull breach!" And let's be honest, in TNG, Riker kept getting into trouble because of his latest girl of the week before he finally settled on Troi, and 99 times out of 100, the majority of the episode involves figuring out what the heck is going on.
    Heck, looked at without the haze of nostalgia, every captain was flawed. Kirk was highly racist against Klingons for personal reasons, so much so that the entire movie The Undiscovered Country was kicked off because a Vulcan crewmate heard Kirk making a racist rant in his quarters. Picard tended to stick far too closely to the rules instead of doing what was right which doomed at least one pre-warp civilization. Sisko had his entire "In The Pale Moonlight" episode which speaks for itself. Janeway got her crew literally destroyed multiple times and only got save because Deus Ex Machina happened over and over and over again. The list goes on and on. The captains and bridge crew of Star Trek were never perfect and were never gods. This episode, heck, this entire series is about showing what life is like for ordinary people in Star Trek, having to struggle to survive the bad decisions of the people in charge who, once you've known them long enough to see past the veil of hero-worship, are just as flawed as the people they lead.

    I was a bit dubious at first, but this show has completely grown on me. Its doing everything right. Its well written, funny but not forced. It makes brilliant use of canon reference for tipping other iterations, The plots are every bit as whacky as TOS, the visual aesthetic is classic TNG/DS9, and the whole thing feels right. It feels like Star Trek. This show is to the Trek franchise, what Lego Batman is to the Batman franchise. What's not to like? Having John Lancie voicing Q shows a genuine respect for the canon, characters, actors, and the audience. I'm praying for an episode in S02 with a Shatnir voiced Kirk.

    Far too often I found that, due to the setup of the shows of the past, the senior staffs of each series were like their own clique who sometimes seemed to look down upon the rest of the crew.

      Though O’Brien was the highest non-commissioned rank in starfleet if I recall. Plus he doesn’t seem to actively seek a commissioned rank and given his achievements and quality of service I doubt that Maxwell, Picard or Sisko wouldn’t have recommended him for a commission if he sought one. O’Brien seems to be content with being A leader but doesn’t want to be THE leader if that makes sense.

      O’Brien never wanted a commission - he’s perfectly content being an enlisted man. And his higher level enlisted rank didn’t impede him from becoming Chief of Operations of DS9.
      That having been said, your point does make sense where Harry Kim was concerned. He should’ve been promoted during the fifth season, but Berman drew the line at that - which was stupid. I would’ve promoted Kim to Lieutenant JG, and promoted Paris to Full Lieutenant. That way, you still have Kim is the lowest ranking officer, but no longer an Ensign.

      It's much like in "Legion of Super-Heroes" where over the course of a 1,000 years some of the written events were wrong. Post-Crisis, in the 30th Century history said that Superman started his career as a Superboy, but actually he started his career as a young adult as Superman.

    I wish this episode went further. Instead of having the cadets complain about their superiors' quirks or recklessness, have them mention real flaws in how they handle missions. Most Starfleet captains have allowed entire civilizations to suffer pointlessly all in the name of the almighty Prime Directive; and worst, a couple even felt proud of it. Reveal a cadet disobeyed their captain by giving the dying aliens life-saving medicine despite them not having warp tech. It'd be a good way to retcon some of the uglier past episodes.
