      I disagree about the beauty of the covers. They've got a nostalgic feeling if you're from the US, but if not, they're not very pretty. The US covers of SS, CoS & PoA are awful. They get a little better since GoF.
      The 2014 UK covers aren't perfect, but they're certainly more beautiful and detailed.

    I loved the last book, with all the magnificent illustrations perfectly drawn to help us picture the images, J K Rowling had conveyed in words, better for people who may not be as imaginative as I am. But the first book that was sbown in the video, the one published by Bloomsbury, will always have a special in my heart. Personally, they do have one of the best cover arts and spines compared to the other edition of Harry Potter and make an excellent choice for a showcase on the bookshelves. But this edition by Bloomsbury will always be special to me, because I did my first read of this spectacular series on it. It was dirt cheap at the time, at least I think it was, only 40$ for the box set and when I got home and sat down and read it, I couldn't have put it down. I was obsessed with it and I finished the whole series in a matter of only 3 weeks, amazingly fast considering it usually takes me 3 weeks to just finish one book. But this series has helped me in kickstarting my love for books and in a way I feel heavily connected to these Bloomsbury published editions in particular. Don't know why I had to say all this but I guess I went on a bit of a tangent hahahaa.

    The gift edition you're holding with the purple box and orange book isn't glued binding. I'm into omnibus collecting and can assure you that's sewn binding, thus the shape of an "eye" when you open it, as seen at 3:22 in your video. Glued binding makes it so that the pages don't pull away from the spine, which creates gutter loss.

    • @BookCravings

      I happily own the whole set of those gift editions..
      And mine are all sewn except the first one, which is glued. It was a happy surprise, because before buying them I read comments like the one given here. I couldn't resist a discount and bought the chamber of secrets, for me it was an important issue to have found out that it was sewn, then ended up buying them all.
      I don't understand why the philosopher's stone is the only one glued, but the rest are good bindings. Very happy with them, they look nice on the shelf and are more suitable for holding the book while reading it..
      They haven't got signatures, I believe you've been hit by a confundus charm

    I just bought online Bloomsbury hardcover childrens edition in the red dragon boxset and i am very disappointed. I asked several people here on youtube that have if the quality is good especially the glued pages. The said yes. However they are horrible, glue is coming apart even as they are brand new and certain passages as you showed the glue is unesthetically showing but much worse that the example you showed. Money out the window. I am from Slovakia and I have never seen such bad binding, many books used to be sewed perfectly. • @BookCravings
      @BookCravings  4 роки тому +1

      Luan de Souza sewn spines are much more durable and usually very flexible. A sewn spine allows the book to lay flat open over a table without you needing to force it open... just to give you an example. So, when I buy collectible books that are a bit more expensive I prefer them to be at least smith-sewn. Nothing against paperpacks and cheaper editions, but when it comes to special editons I hate when the spine is glued because it means inferior quality (the publisher is obviously saving money and selling a cheaper book as a “special” editon).

    Greetings from Ukraine !
    Can i aks you about the quality of paper in illustrated editions ? Is it an acid-free ? I cant find this information anywhere. I know it is FSC-certified, but that doesn't means it's actually acid-free. It also has different publishers, Bloomsbury and Scholastic, is there any difference in quality ?
    Thank you for your reviews, its much more informative then most part of the others)

      Hi!! The Illustrated editions have great quality coated paper. They are absolutely perfect. I think they have different publishers in US and UK. As far as I know, the only difference is the text using American English and British English. They don’t state the paper is acid free, but considering how they look now in my shelves I believe they are.

    Criticises stuff spines fire being unreadable (fair) to then go on to recommend giant editions seems odd to me. I guess she’s happy to read on a desk only. I certainly wouldn’t be reading those on the train.

    So disappointed to learn that the slipcased editions are glued. I really love slipcases and was thinking of getting those, but now I won’t.
