Both versions are GORGEOUS and have different approaches. While Kay's focuses on illustration, MinaLima's focuses on design and interactivity. To say that one is better than others is not correct because both are fabulous. Thank you very much for the video and for showing the inside of both books so that we can have a clearer idea of the content!
I like Minalima's art better. Nothing against Jim Kay. But my favorite genre has always been animation so I'm a sucker for illustrations with cartoon styles and design that seens like disney characters that Minalima nailed. Jim Kay's art is indeed much more detailed and he focuses more on landscapes, creatures and ghosts. But his art is too dark and his characters have a too adult design for my personal taste.
Really liked your video. And yes - for all our Harry Potter fans and those who still become fans - the magical world of Harry Potter is for anyone and every one. Whether you are 11 or 101 years of age, YOU my friend will fall in love with this series!
thank you so much for reviewing these two editions. I am choosing between the two for my just turned six grandson so that his father can read this to him. It can be the beginning of a long series of reads in his life. A gift for both father and son. i’m going to go look at these editions now and see which one appeals to me for six-year-old. I think the Jim Kay edition is the one that I would choose for an older reader. Of course, I am an adult and I think I love both..
I have the first 3 Jim Kay so I’ll get the rest ( their my daughter’s) but now I want the Minalimas as well. They look amazing and remind me of the ology series
I’m getting minalima, personal preference for art which are more whimsical. Kay’s art isn’t impressionist by the way. It’s defined and clear. Impressionist art uses small brush strokes to create an undefined picture. Eg. Monet, Van Gogh, degas.
Personally I think Minalima is better. The illustrations are more child friendly in the way they are stylised but without losing complexity and depth and it covers more elements and imagery in the story even though it’s smaller than Jim Kay in width. Minalima is also more whimsical. The only challenge I see is that the later books will be extremely chunky with Minalima if they aren’t smart about formatting. I feel like Jim Kay has a lot of empty space which is wasted and doesn’t cover as many scenes and wizarding imagery. I personally prefer Jim Kay’s work on “A Monster Calls” rather than Harry Potter.
thank you i have the illustrated editions of all the 4 books yet but none of minalima... wanted to know anyways how was this version... now i will get minalima editions too
My vote only for jim kay, it looks more realistic and takes us to another dimension. Minalima edition can only be considered collector's delight. The illustration of hogwarts castle by jim kay was awsome. Ofcourse minalima worked for harrypotter movies; they could have improved their illustrations, jimkay illustrations just look like what is mentioned in book. But his illustrations are less in last two editions. And it is really sad he withdrew from final two books
Both has its positives. I love Jim kay's tone but due to the interactive parts kids may find Minalima more fun. 😊I would suggest you to get both😊After all its "potter " so can't go wrong, aye?
I started to read them with my daughter when she was 11 with the 1st book, but we took turns reading and she couldn't wait for me anymore so she took off reading the rest. So I've never finished reading even one book and haven't seen all the movies. I'm more of a visual person, and to me, the MinaLima version is smaller and easier to hold, more like a real book, not as heavy either. So I think I would pick that one. The Jim Kay version is also beautiful, but due to the size it seems like something you can't curl up in a chair with, you'd almost have to read at a table, cannot carry the book around with you. Also takes up more space on a shelf, and probably cost more. But maybe they are all available now? And only the first book is available in the MinaLima version. Lots to consider If its' for a younger child, they may tear the interactive parts so the age of the person and if they can respect the book should be considered.
Very informational ! Thank you so much I wanted to ask is content same , I mean the writing bit? As you mentioned in one chapter Kay's version has more details?
MinaLima wins everything. Even just the physical size of the book. Jim Kay's is too big and bulky. MinaLima is perfect to where although fatter, its smaller in dimensions and forgives the overall thickness making it just better on hand. Also the feel of the book. Mina Lima has more details with embossed and foiled exteriors. Then of course the interactive art throughout the book.

Helpful video, but I'm still not sure. I'm buying one edition as a gift to someone who has never read it. I'm leaning towards the Jim Kay version.
