    Many thanks for sharing these brilliant step-by-step instructions.
    I used long cable ties to keep the cables out of the way. This left sufficient clearance and both hands free to remove and insert the battery without needing to open the roof. I can see the benefit of doing it your way but was worried that it could result in a major inconvenience if something went wrong with the battery replacement.

    • @AskTheCarExperts

      Hi Chris, Very true. If something did go wrong the top could be stuck open. But I have done a lot like this with no issues. Smart to use zip ties! That's the worst part keeping everything out of the way.

No reprogramming or "registration" needed if both are AGM and more or less the same capacity (according to BMW and battery dealer). Works perfectly.

    You can also do a short program to change to lead acid retrofit. Personally I wouldn't as I have seen several exploded and leaves a mess in the boot, in the normal boot location is good, on the side fender is a terrible location. But yeah, you'd be surprised how many batteries die, the problem is typical BMW owners hardly drive their cars or know that you need to let the car sleep as soon as the engine is off. Lock the door with the remote and if everything is working correctly and no control units not playing ball, should enter sleep mode in 15 minutes or less.

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  4 дні тому

      Hi Miguel, Disconnecting the battery will lose stored data. If you just want to disconnect the battery only disconnect the negative. If you disconnect both you loose the feed to the fuses and if you had to jump from the jump terminal you would not he powering anything.

    • @AskTheCarExperts

      There is a lot of incorrect information out there on this topic. Battery registration on this model only tells the car the battery was replaced. It may effect charging strategy slightly but that is all. In my opinion there is no need to register a battery.

    Couple of questions since I am planning to do this exact job on mine
    1) if the side panels are off and only the battery needs to be removed, do we still need to roll up the top 3/4th or would the top on work?
    2) Incase you aren’t buying an OEM battery, which one would you recommend - H7 with 850 CCA?
    3) would the Antel app also code a new battery if the amp vary to 80 Amps instead of 90

    • @AskTheCarExperts
      @AskTheCarExperts  Рік тому +1

      Hello, Good questions. You can do the battery with the top closed but it is much easier to remove this heavy battery with the top open as shown.
      I usually stick with the same rating battery. The Ancel app can register a new battery but it cannot code for an upgrade.
      Keep in mind a larger battery may not fit in the hold down location. You don't want a loose battery as the internal plates can short through vibration or short a wire from rubbing.
      Best wishes with your install!

      I just dropped in my second Duralast H8-AGM. The last worked for EXACTLY 7 years, just like the OEM BMW battery, so I can personally recommend.
      Another programming option is Carly, but you might need to buy their proprietary dongle (they don't guarantee it will work otherwise) and some extra features like battery reset get pricey, but it's a great tool with a lot of customization options.

      It is an H8 AGM. A lot of manufacturers make that size. Most are $186 to $249. Champion, acdelco, interstate, duralast etc. $300 out the door for BMWs little labels is not too bad either , some people like to keep everything OEM and on this car I don’t blame them.

My top got stuck down once, had to drive top down in the cold to the dealer. They kept my car all day, they couldn't figure out what was wrong.
