This game looks great because of the art direction. If everything was well lit you will notice the low poly environments and characters. The combination of good bump maps and the sparing use of lighting to accentuate those bump maps sells this game's graphics
One thing people rarely mention - the tremendously positive effect Doom 3 had on the community, which was experiencing major stagnation at time and desperately needed some fresh blood (which Doom 3 provided).
As an OG Doomer, I remember that the reception to Doom 3 at the time was... mixed... to say the least. I loved it, because I could totally see the vibe it was going for. In many ways, it actually harkens back to Tom Hall's original Doom design document from 1992. It's kind of a reimagining of "Here's the version of Doom 1 we didn't make, but with newer idTech". Oddly enough, I think the XBox port is a bit overlooked, as while it was 'cut down', the areas they cut actually kind of condense the game, make it a bit more actiony, and Resurrection of Evil goes even further and pretty much feels like an OG Doom game.
God thanks the hardware was very limited for Doom1. Limitations breed superior games. Gameplay wise, Doom3 is an empty shell. Doom1 is completely different vision and design by Romero, far superior game.
I love visual style of the idTech4 Engine! It make games still look like games. DOOM 3 is like walking though a dark, but still painterly painting. Not photorealistic (which is good imo), but painterly and yet still dark. Things I would adjust in DOOM 3 (via mods) would mostly be weapon sounds, weapon sprites, damage and fire rate, spread, animation speeds, ammo counts and refill, and how the Cube works. Such a beautiful game. Thanks for uploading! You bet I would want to see more idTech4 content everywhere, haha :D
Thanks @Ritzord for the video and great to see more love for this game. I love the look and aesthetic, too. I also love the gameplay - very different to the original Doom games, obviously, but I love those, too, for different reasons. Sure, there are nitpicks you can make but no major flaws for me. I even enjoy the corniness of the story/setting which is done in a tongue-in-cheek, b-movie kind of way
Doom 3 BFG Edition all the way, Better than Doom 3 with all the glitches (too dark, flashlight was not mounted as it was supposed to be) But love it all
I beat this game once every year. Its just an excellent game. This and the original RAGE. I do that one once a year as well. Usually during the winter months.
Doom 3 was an underrated masterpiece of the early 2000's. Sure it doesnt quite hold up to the latest shooters, but it was an important step in the evolution of shooters from Golden Eye to Call of Duty. I remember being utterly amazed by the lighting and physics of the game and how they were used to magnify the atmosphere of horror. Anyway, despite what the critics said, I always thought it delivered as advertised, at ticket straight to hell with nothing but a flashlight and a BFG.
I used to play Doom 3 religiously when it came out. Sound design was a major component of this game I feel you could have mentioned a bit more in the vid. The base game was great but IMO the Trent Reznor soundpack was incredible. Great video though! Congrats, you gained a sub!
Happy 20th anniversary doom 3 🥳🥳🥳 I am also a doom 3 shotgun lover, I love the doom 3 shotgun as while yes, you have to be up close, thats the point and it absolutely sheds enemies up close, it feels so satisfying to kill things with it!
The Doom 3 shotgun IS THE BEST! There's nothing quite like rushing up to a demon and capping it in the head point-blank in one shot! I get an Imp in one hit 90+% of the time this way! Yeah, it's not good for long-range, but then all shotguns are different. I can kill many monsters in one hit with this shotgun, if I just rush up to it and get the first shot in. It really is just adapting to the weapon. If you want to kill demons from a distance, use the machinegun or the chaingun instead.
I played this on the Xbox when it first came out and then again on Oculus 2 VR when they made the mod. One of the best games for its time honestly, great atmosphere great story good game.
@@Valkyries733 Back in the old days, before the BFG edition, there was a pretty amazing online mod called Last Man standing, which not only brought coop to the Doom 3 campaign, but also brought its own game modes with tons of maps, and also included Episode 1 of the original Doom, remade for Doom 3.
This is the first 'horror' game I played, or at least the first game that affected me. I know there were games before that, like Resident Evil, but this one just made me jump a few times where no other game had done that before. I think it's only real downfall was it was competing with Half Life 2, I remember at the time you either liked this and hated HL2 or loved HL2 and hated this. They were completely different game. I didn't play HL2 until way later so I guess I was in the Doom 3 camp although HL2 is now one of my favorite games ever.
09:55 "This is the definitive way to play" I submit to you: the Team BEEF Quest port of the game. Playing Doom 3 in the Quest 3 is unlike anything I've ever experienced. I was so used to the dang imps monster-closeting me in the standard version of the game... but when they're lounging directly at your actual face, it's a bit different. Also, you really feel the darkness when you literally have to aim your flashlight as if it where real in order to see.
@@Ritzord my dude you have no idea what you are missing out on! please load it and make a video about it! everything you wanted doom to have its there ! its the true experience

I don't know if co op was available on pc for Doom 3, I had it on Xbox, but if you play in co op mode you can kill the cyberdemon old school doom way by just shooting at it until it dies. I ate up nearly all the ammo for my weapons to kill him though. You don't even have to play through the game to do it, I think all the levels are already unlocked in co op mode, just pull up co op, go to the last mission and go for it.
DOOM 3 was my first DOOM game. I always loved looking through the audio logs, emails and voice and video logs that flesh out the story and the lore. And yeah DOOM 3 still scares me to this day.
